This study examines the mineralogy of sepiolites occurred within the carbonaceous rocks of Songak schist and Pyeongtaek migmatitic gneiss of Precambrian Seosan group, in the western part of Chungnam. Host rocks of the sepiolite were dolomitic rocks and have experienced hydrothermal alteration and metamorphism. Mesozoic granite is assumed as a main source of hydrothermal alteration for the dolomitic rocks. Some of the tremolite asbestos coexist with the sepiolites. Representative sepiolite and tremolite samples were collected from the layers cracks or fractures of the dolomitic rocks and/or examined with microscope with microscope, XRD, SEM and TEM. Sepiolites are mainly recognized along the cracks assumed as pathways of hydrothermal solution. Tremolites are mainly found at layers or cracks of the dolomitic rocks and occur as asbestos as well as non-asbestos forms. It was confirmed that some of the tremolite asbestos were coexisted with the sepiolites. Overall results suggest that the occurrences of sepiolites within the dolomitic rocks mainly result in the hydrothermal alteration and the fluid from the acidic rocks, possibly granites. It also suggests that coexisting tremolite asbestos were formed by similar geological environment.
The lead-zinc-silver-iron deposits from the Janggun mine are of hydrothermal-metasomatic origin, characterized by the marked hydrothermal alteration of the wallrocks, such as hydrothermal manganese enrichment of carbonate rocks, silicification, chloritization, sericitization, montmorillonitization and argillic alteration. The ore deposits have been emplaced within the Janggun Limestone of Cambro-Ordovician age at the immediate contacts with apophyses injected from the Chunyang Granite plutons of Late Jurrasic age. They have been structurally controlled by fractures in the carbonate rocks and the irregular intrusive contacts of granitic rocks, and are closely associated with hypogene manganese carbonate deposits. In the mine nine seperate orebodies are being mined. On the basis of the petrological study, hydrothermal alteration zone of this mine may be divided into the following four zones from wallrock to orebody. (I) Primary calcite and dolomite zone${\rightarrow}$(II) dolomitic limestone zone${\rightarrow}$(III) dolomitic zone${\rightarrow}$(IV) rhodochrosite zone${\rightarrow}$ orebody. There was not recongnized Mn and Fe elements in the primary calcite and dolomite zone. But, in the dolomitic limestone and dolomite zone, calcite and dolomite were subjected to weak hydrothermal manganese enrichment and the grade of the manganese enrichment increase oreward. By means of electron probe microanalysis, it was found that manganoan dolomite occured between primary dolomite grains, cross the cleavage of the primary dolomite and around the dolomite grains. Above these result supports that the Janggun manganese carbonate deposits are of hydrothermal metasomatic origin.
Analysis for landslides was studied in framework of Chungju dam right abutment, 6.5km northeast of Chungju city. $5.5{\times}10^6m^3$ landslide materials were excavated during dam construction for safety of the Chungju dam. Geology of study area is composed mainly of meta sediments such as dolomitic limestone, quartzite and schist which are dipping toward the Nam Han river. Scanline survey of discontinuities was performed for slope stability, resistivity exploration was performed for the evaluation of potential failure plane, and direct shear strength test of rocks and soils was performed for the effect on landslide. Monitoring systems of tiltmeter, tensiometer, ground water observation hole and level monument were installed during dam construction and interpreted for the evaluation of slope instability. Kinematic solution of the geological structure and evaluation using safety factor for slope may prove the failure of the slope.
State-designated rain gauge pedestals, including a rain gauge support, were installed in front of the "Imunwon" at Changdeok Palace, made from various rock types. Some of those pedestals provide exact information on their production dates. These rain gauge pedestals are highly valuable as scientific instruments; however, there has been insufficient scientific research carried out on them. Therefore, precise analysis and conservative consideration are required. As a result of petrographic character analysis, the Changdeokgung rain gauge pedestal has been classified as marble. Furthermore, comparison of the results of P-XRF analysis with GSJ reference samples (JLs-1, JDo-1) has determined it to be dolomitic marble. Applying the same analysis to other state-designated rain gauge pedestals, it was presumed that the rain gauge supports at Gyeongsand-do Provincial Office and Gwansanggam were each made from aplite, pinkish medium-to-coarse biotite granite. Results confirmed that only the Changdeokgung rain gauge pedestal was made from marble. Marble is viewed as having an identity specificity rooted in a certain historical background. According to the tendency towards stone figures being made from marble, especially dolomitic marble, it is necessary to further studies whether particular rocks were used to make royal stone figures in Joseon Dynasty.
Domestic marbles are mostly distributed in Gyeonggi and Yeongnam Massifs, southwest and northeast Ogcheon Belts, which belong to Precambrian, age-unknown, Cambrian-Ordovician ages, respectively. The former marbles occur as interbedded rocks in metasediments and xenoliths in granitic gneisses. Age-unknown ones occur as interbedded in the formations of Hyangsanri, Gyeomyeongsan, Hwajeonri and Munjuri, and some in metasedimentary rocks. The latter ones occur as interbedded in Pungchon Limestone, and in Jeongseon Limestone, Hwacheonri Formation and Great Limestone Group, respectively. Among physical properties, porosity shows irregular patterns to density and compressive strength, respectively. Absorption ratio has a linear pattern of positive trend to porosity, and compressive strength mostly shows a positive trend to tensile strength. Compressive strengths of the marbles are as follows : Precambrian $1,106{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$, age-unknown $935{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$. Cambrian $1,162{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$ and Ordovician $1,560{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. Tensile strengths have decreasing trends as the above order of geologic age. In diagrams of major elements, $Al_2O_3,{\;}Fe_2O_{3(t)}{\;}and{\;}Na_2O+K_2O$ generally show positive trends with increasing $v_2$. MgO/CaO of Precambrian and age-unknown marbles have much higher values than Cambrian and Ordovician marbles as follows, Precambrian 0.31, age-unknown 0.30, Cambrian 0.03 and Ordovician 0.08. And MgO shows a negative trend with increasing CaO, which nay be caused by dolomitization. By MgO contents they can be classified into calcitic dolomite, dolomitic limestone, limestone and dolomitic limestone, respectively.
The talc ore deposits can be divided into chloritic and dolomitic ores according to mineral assemblages. The former is mainly composed of chlorite and talc accompanied with dolomite, muscovite and opaque mineral, and the latter of dolomite and talc with serpentine, calcite and magnesite in places. Talc was originated from chlorite and serpentine. Carbonate minerals were formed either directly from the introduced hydrothermal solution or secondarily as a by-product of steatitization of chlorite and serpentine. The process of talc formation may be governed by the chemical composition of the host rocks and the amount and/or chemical composition of the hydrothermal solution which may be different in places. However, the representative reactions producing talc from chlorite and serpentine are as follows : (1) chlorite+$Mg^{++}+Si^{4+}+H_2O$=talc, (2) chlorite+$Mg^{++}+Si^{4+}+Ca^{++}+CO_2+O_2+H_2O$=talc+ dolomite+ magnesite, and (3) serpentine +$Mg^{++}+Fe^{++}+Si^{4+}+Ca^{++}+CO_2+H_2O$=talc+dolomite. The reactions indicate that the carbonate minerals can be formed when the hydrothermal solution have high $fO_2$ and $fCO_2$. The steatitization might be proceeded by the hydrothermally metasomatic reaction between chlorite schist or chlorite gneiss intercalated in the granitic gneiss and hydrothermal solution accompanied to the wet granitization.
The geology of the talc ore deposits in the Chungju area consists of the Kyemyeongsan Formation, the Munjuri Formation, the Daehyangsan Quartzite, the Hyangsanni Dolomite, and the basic rocks of the Ogcheon belt. The talc ore occurs in the Hyangsanni Dolomite near the Daehyangsan Quartzite The mineral assemblages in the Hyangsanni Dolomite are \circled1calcite-tremolite-talc-quartz, \circled2calcite-talc-quartz, \circled3tremolite-calcite-dolomite, and \circled4calcite-dolomite-phlogopite-chlorite. Talc has almost the ideal composition($X_{Mg}$=Mg/(Fe+Mg)=0.98). Talc was formed in siliceous dolomite by the medium-pressure type regional metamorphism. The evidences for contact metamorphism and/or hydrothermal reaction are not clear. The metamorphic grade of the Hyangsanni Dolomite and its adjacent pelitic or basic rocks near the deposits corresponds to epidote-amphibolite facies or greenschist facies based on the, mineral assemblages of \circled1hornblendebiotite-muscovite-epidote-quartz \circled2biotite-chlorite-quartz, and \circled3hornblende-actinolite-plagioclasequartz. The formation of the talc deposits were caused by the following reactions due to greenschist facies metamorphism of siliceous-dolomitic rocks in the Hyansanni Dolomite. (I) 3 dolomite+4 quartz+$H_2O$= talc+ 3 calcite +3 $CO_2$; (11) 3 tremolite+ 2 $H_2O$+ 6 $CO_2$= 5 talc+ 6 calcite + 4 quartz. The minimum temperature of the talc-tremolite-quartz assemblage is about $434^{\circ}C$ from calcite thermometry and the carbon dioxide mole fraction in metamorphic fulid($X_{$CO_2$}$) is about 0.1 at assumed pressure, 3 kbar.

Poongjeon talc deposits is emplaced in dolomite and dolomitic limestone of the Cambro-Ordovician Samtaesan Formation. Ore in Poongjeon is low grade talc and the deposit has been known as the contact metasomatic or hydrothermal replacement type related to the intrusion of late Cretaceous granite in this area. X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, fluid inclusion and stable isotope analysis were utilized to examine the mineralogy of the ore and the origin of the ore fluid. The ore from Poongjeon mine mainly consists of talc and tremolite with minor amount of illite, vermiculite, smectite, and chlorite-vermiculite mixed layer. Occurrence of ore body indicates that the talc-tremolite ore was formed through the replacement by the $SiO_2$-rich hydrothermal fluid along the bedding and dike boundaries, or contact of amphibolite and basic dike with carbonate rocks. The temperature and pressure of the ore forming fluids at the time of the talc mineralization were estimated as $350^{\circ}C$ and 400 bar, respectively, based on the heating and freezing data of the fluid inclusions in quartz from talc-tremolite veins. During the talc-tremolite formation, fluids were divided into $CO_2$-enriched fluid and $CO_2$-poor fluid from $CO_2$ immiscibility (or effervescence). Oxygen isotope values (${\delta}^{18}O$) of the talc-tremolite fall within a range between 12.2 and 12.9‰. Hydrogen isotope values(${\delta}D$) of the ore range from -60 to -85‰ and $H_2O$ contents range from 2.0 to 3.4 wt.%. ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}D$ values of talc ore indicate that the hydrothermal fluid involved in talc-tremolite formation was of igneous origin. Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic exchange between talc ore and the surface water was negligible after talc-tremolite ore formation.
The study area is located in between Hacheonri and Weolgulri, Jecheon-gun where the formations of Okcheon group and Chosun group come in contact and the stratigraphy and geological age of the Okcheon group have been debated among previous workers. The dolomitic limestone which distributed at Cheongam and Dumusil is clarified as the Hyangsanri dolomite formation and the quartzite distributed at Cheongam and Howeunri as Taehyangsan quartzite formation. The newly named Soorumsan schist interbedded in the Great Limestone Series was previously classified Seochangri formation. It is also classified that the formation formerly named as Seochangri was divided into newly named Manji schist which seems to be correlated to Kemyeongsan and Munjuri formation. The formation formerly named as Buknori is clarified as Hwanggangri formation. The Samtaesan formation has been clarified as the lower and upper limestone beds which belong to the Great Limestone Series. The area divided into two groups, that is, Okcheon system of Pre-cambrian age occupies western part and the Great Limestone Series of Chosun system of Cambro-Ordovician age eastern part of this area. Okcheon system consists in ascending order of Manji schist, Hyangsanri dolomite, Taehyangsan quartzite, Munjuri schist, and Hwanggangri formation of meta-tillite. The Great Limestone Series of Chosun group consists in ascending order of lower limestone, Soorumsan schist, Hoosanri quartzite and upper limestone formations. Busan augen gneiss seems to be igneous origin. Unmetamorphosed shale interbed can be traced in the Soorumsan schist. Previous study (Kims, 1974) reveals that meta-volcanic rocks are distributed from south to north along contact zone of the Okcheon and Chosun groups, and it has been confirmed that the meta-volcanics crop out continuously from the adjacent southern quardrangle into the southern part of the area studied, intruding along the fault zone between the Okcheon and Chosun groups which seems to be upthrust as in the area south. This evidence coincides with Kims' work (1974) which states that the Precambrian Okcheon group is largely overturned and thrusted over the Chosun group.
This study examined the granite, quartzite, phyllite, schist, and gneiss as aggregate resources among the original rock distributed in the Chungju-Goesan area. The granite distributed in the study area is mainly composed of Jurassic biotite granite, and the quartzite layer is from the Daehyangsan quartzite Formation distributed on the upper part of the Gyemyeongsan Formation and the Hyangsan-ri dolomitic limestone Formation. In addition, phyllite is pophyrytic phyllite-schist from the Hwanggangri Formation of the Okcheon group, schist is chlorite schist, from the Munjuri Formation of the Okcheon group, and gneiss is porphyroblastic gneiss which is the upper part of the Seochangri Formation. Aggregate quality evaluation factors of these rocks included fineness modulus, absorption, unit weight, absolute dry density, solid content, porosity, resistance to abrasion, and soundness. In the case of granite, it was found to be partially unsatisfactory in terms of unit weight, solid content, porosity, and resistance to abrasion. Gneiss was found to be out of the standard values in resistance to abrasion and schist in porosity and solid content. As for the overall quality of aggregate resources, it was analyzed that quartzite, gneiss, and phyllite showed excellent quality. Aggregate quality tests are performed simply for each rock, but the rock may vary depending on the morphology of the mineral. Therefore, when analyzing and utilizing the quality evaluation of aggregate resources, it will be possible to use them more efficiently if the rock-mineralological research is performed together.
