Methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRS), which are often multi-drug resistant (MDR), are important pathogens in both human and veterinary healthcare. The purpose of this study was to characterize the antimicrobial resistance of MRS isolated from dog ears in Korea. From 827 dog ears, staphylococci were cultured from both ears with otitis externa (n = 161, 41.0%) and healthy ears (n = 135, 31.1%). The prevalence of coagulase-positive staphylococci (CoPS) in ears with otitis externa (58.4%) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in healthy ears (28.2%), while the prevalence of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) in healthy ears (74.8%) was higher (P < 0.05) than in ears with otitis externa (41.6%). Forty-six (35.1%) and 74 (44.8%) CoPS and CoNS isolates, respectively, were determined to be MRS. Antimicrobial resistance in MRS was most frequently observed for penicillin (76.7%), ampicillin (61.7%), kanamycin (61.7%), erythromycin (47.5%), tetracycline (47.5%), and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (46.7%). Overall, the MDR isolates were resistant to significantly more (P < 0.05) antimicrobial agents tested than methicillin-sensitive staphylococci in this study. These results provide therapeutic guidelines for the treatment of otitis externa in dogs from Korean veterinary hospitals, and the significant associated health concern to companion animals and their human contacts.
This study was carried out to determine the causative agent and the clinical features of dermatophytosis occurred in 3 dogs from Tae-gu, Korea between 1996 and 1997. Specimens of hair and scale, collected from skin lesions were inoculated on potato dextrose agar and mycobiotic agar supplemented with thiamine and inositol. The agar plates were incubated at $25^{\circ}C$ for 2 weeks. Growing fungi isolated were identified by the morphological and growth characterization on bromocresol purple-milk solids-glucose medium, Christensen urea broth and trichophyton media, and by hair perforation tests. Skin lesions were observed in legs, abdomen, ears, face and head with alopecia of various sizes accompanied by itching and/or inflammation. The causative agent of dermatophytosis in the 3 dogs was identified as Microsprum gypseum and Trichophyton rubrum (mixed infection, dog 1), T rubrum (dog 2) and T raubitschekii (dog 3). The dermatophytosis by T rubrum and T raubitschekii was first found on animals in Korea.
An 8-year-old, castrated male, Schnauzer dog was presented for evaluation of gradually worsening erythematous papules. Physical examination revealed multiple erythematous papules having a firm, gritty texture located in bilateral ears, dorsal midline, perianal and inguinal area. Skin biopsy revealed aberrant structure, characterized by atrophic epidermal-dermal layer structure with granular materials which was presumed as calcinosis cutis secondary to iatrognic hyperadrenocotricism. By initiating minocycline for 14 days, there was reduction in size, number of calcium deposit with remarkably decreased erythema. This case report presents the clinical trial of minocycline as a potential agent in treating dogs with calcinosis cutis.
These experiments were designed to evaluate the possibility of brain-stem auditory evoked responses(BAER) as a diagnostic tool for deafness in dogs. The BAER was recorded from three different groups of dogs; the normal dogs,'dog with otitis externa and dogs with unilateral destruction of cochlear. BAER of the normal dogs was consisted of distinct five peaks(I, II, III-IV, V). Furthermore, the clear shapes of waveform were observed at 85 dB. The latency of BAER was increased with reducing the intensity of sound-stimulus. The highest threshold of BAER was measured at 2 KHz with 10-30 dB. Dog with otitis externs demonstrated unclear shapes of BAER compared to the that of normal dogs. In the dogs with unilateral destruction of cochlear, the flat and indistinct waveform of BAER was recorded from the cochlear destroyed ear while that of BAER from normal side of ears did not show any differences from the normal BAER. These results indicate that the BAER can be clinically used in order to diagnose the deafness in dogs.
This study was performed to compare the individual characteristics of the vocalization and behavior in the adult female German Shepherd in military service. In this study, a stranger and an other strange dog approached their kennel. Their body postures included ears forward and up, slowly wagged tails, lips raised, mouth open and teeth exposed. It was Interesting that their vocalizations were only the bark without any combination of other vocalizations. There were significant differences between duration of call(DC), pitch(P), Fl formant, F2 formant, F3 formant and F4 formant(p<0.05) except interval between call(IBC) and intensity(I) among their barks. It was suggested that the differences between same breed dogs'barks could be recognized and the data of spectrogram, especially formant contour, could be used to discriminate the sender characteristics. The body postures could also be used to understand their mind.
This study was performed to develop ethogram of the Jindo dog's temperament categories under various conditions. A set of 12 behavioral tests were developed to investigate temperament categories expressed by the dogs. Fourty-three adult Jindo dogs(24 males, 19 females) from three different farms located in Jindo island were tested in 12 different behavioral tests. All test procedures and dog's behaviors responded to the tests were recorded using two digital video cameras and one digital still camera. A single observer reviewed all of the videotapes focused on dog's vocalization, movement, head, ears, eyes, mouth, and tail-positions. After all of the behavioral variables expressed throughout the testing period were described in detail, an ethogram of four temperament categories of 'sociability', 'aggression', 'fearfulness', and 'submission' revealed by 12 behavioral tests was developed.
This study was aimed for ultrasonographic assessment of the tympanic membrane and the tympanic bulla in five healthy Beagle dogs. To improve an ultrasonographic image, the ear canal was filled with warm saline, and an 11 MHz linear probe and a 6.5 MHz convex probe were used. The structures of ear component such as ear canal, ear cartilage and tympanic membrane were easily identified. Especially, tympanic membrane was presented as a reflaction surface which was resulted from the different acoustic impedence between the fluid-filled anechoic ear canal and the gas-filled hyperechoic tympanic cavity in normal dogs. In five left-side ears, the saline was infused into the external ear canal after the tympanic membrane had been ruptured experimentally. Both anechoic fluid-filled ear canal and tympanic cavity were clearly identified. In five right-side ears, the surgically fluid-filled tympanic cavity was imaged as a hypoechoic oval shaped structure. When tympanic cavity and ear canal have been contained with fluid, it was difficult to identify whether the tympanic membrane was ruptured or not. For assessment of the ear structure with ultrasonography, the 11 MHz linear probe was considered as an optimal equipment for a serial assessment of ear canal, tympanic membrane and tympanic bulla whereas the 6.5 MHz convex probe was suitable to assess the tympanic cavity. The results suggest that ultrasonography with saline infusion into the ear canal can be used to find the intactness of the tympanic membrane and to assess the fluid- filld tympanic bulla.
Malignant skin tumors and precancerous lesions have a predilection to be located in the nasal dorsum or sidewall. Although invasive reconstructions have been presented, no simple and suitable method has yet been reported for this area. The flap presented herein, named the lateral nasal advancement flap, is designed on the adjacent lateral region of the sidewall or nasal dorsum and advanced in the medial direction. Two Burow's triangles are removed in the upper and lower portions of the flap: the upper triangle along the nasofacial sulcus and the lower triangle along the nasofacial sulcus and/or the alar groove. Excellent results were obtained in the two clinical cases described in this report. Neither a trap door deformity nor dog-ears developed in either case. The postsurgical scars followed the aesthetic lines and became inconspicuous. A distinct angle was formed in the nasofacial sulcus without anchor sutures. This surgical procedure is technically simple and is performed under local anesthesia. Although the flap is a cheek-based advancement flap, postsurgical scars do not remain in the cheek; instead, they are located in the nasofacial sulcus and alar groove. The lateral nasal advancement flap is recommended for reconstruction of the nasal sidewall and dorsum.
The head of the Jindo, Korean native dog was measured in the present study. One hundred and ninety five Jindoes were randomly selected from the 1,985 dogs in the Jindo County in August 1998, which were screened by the judging committee of the County and registered by inserting electronic chips in the withers. They were about one and a half-year-old, and were white and fawn dogs. The head was divided into three parts; the skull, ear and nose. Each part was divided again, and a total of 14 parts of the head were measured using calipers. Measurements of the skull part and skull index were bigger in dogs than in bitches, but no differences were found between sexes. No differences were found in the measurements of the ear part between sexes or coat colors, except the distance between two ears in which the distance was longer in dogs than in bitches. In the measurements of the nose, the width of rostral part was larger in fawns than in whites and in dogs than in bitches. The rest were larger in dogs than in bitches.

Purpose: Reconstruction of eyebrow defects after wide excision of the benign and malignant tumors present a cosmetic challenge to the plastic surgeon. There were several methods for reconstruction of partial eyebrow defect with local flaps except hair bearing composite graft. We introduce simple eyebrow reconstruction with bilateral advancement flap and tattooing on the idea that eyebrow tattooing is popular permanent eyebrow makeup among elderly Korean women. Methods: The flaps were designed on both ends of the eyebrow defect along the upper and lower margin of the eyebrow. Both flaps were cut, undermined and were moved centrally to cover the defect. Both flaps were attached along the vertical suturing line. The rest of each flap was sown with dog-ears revised minimally. Scar lines would be hidden along the natural borders of the eyebrow if possible. The resulting vertical scar finally was covered with hair. After 8 months, eyebrow tattooing would be done to camouflage eyebrow shortening and scar. Results: Partial eyebrow defect was reconstructed successfully with bilateral advancement flap and tattooing. The postoperative scar was inconspicuous and eyebrow looked symmetric. Conclusion: We recommend partial eyebrow reconstruction with bilateral advancement flap and tattooing for the elderly Korean female patients after excision of small tumor in and around eyebrow region.
