This paper presents experimental observation of asymmetric electrohydrodynamic flow generated around a pair of symmetric coplanar electrodes. Electrodes are attached on the bottom of the cavity containing a dielectric liquid, i.e., a mixture of dodecane and 0.5% wt Span80. In the first experiment, an AC voltage of 1500 V is applied with the frequency varying in the range 10~500 hz and the left electrode being grounded. The flow patterns show that the center line of vortices is unexpectedly tilted to the left side. If the right side electrode is grounded, the center line is tilted to the right side. The magnitude of the fluid velocity shows an irregular variation with the frequency in the range 10 Hz~100 Hz, beyond which it simply decays. In the second experiment, we applied fixed AC with 1000 V and 60 Hz superposed by DC voltage varying in the range -1000 V ~ +1000 V. The center line of the flow pattern is tilted to the right side with positive DC voltage and to the left side with negative DC. We have managed to show that the flow pattern can be symmetric with a suitable combination of DC and AC, e.g., DC 850 V plus AC 1000 V with the frequency 10 Hz.
Volatile flavor components of extracts produced from the domestic angelica root, which are oleoresin and absolutes type, for tobacco flavoring materials were isolated by solvent extraction method and were analyzed by GC and GC/MSD. And then volatile flavor components of oleoresin were compared with volatiles isolated from absolutes. A total of 65 components were identified in the angelica root extracts, from which 41 components were identified in the oleoresin volatiles, contained 15 hydrocarbons, 12 alcohols, 6 acids, 10 esters and 2 miscellaneous components. The major components were hexadecanoic acid (7.79%), methyl palmitate (6.49%), ethyl palmitate (2.02 %) and sesquiterpenes and sesquiterpene alcohols, such as elemol (2.92 %), ${\gamma}$-selinene (2.19%), $\beta$-selinene (2.02%), $\alpha$-eudesmol (3.49%) and $\beta$-eudesmol (6.12%). On the other hand, volatiles of absolutes, from which 60 components were identified, contained 28 hydrocarbons, 14 alcohols, 5 acids, 10 esters and 3 miscellaneous components. The major components were hyrocarbons, such as undecane (5.11 %), dodecane (3.10%) and pentadecane (1.14 %), and $\alpha$-muurolene (1.64 %), ${\gamma}$-selinene (1.49%), $\beta$-selinene (2.12 %), $\alpha$-eudesmol (2.25%), $\beta$-eudesmol (4.87%), hexadecanoic acid (12.67%) and hexanoic acid (1.87 %).
Pt-Ru and Pt-Ni bimetallic catalysts were prepared and tested for heavy hydrocarbon reforming. Metals were supported on CGO($Ce_{0.8}Gd_{0.2}O_{2.0-x}$) by incipient wetness method. The prepared catalysts were characterized by Temperature programmed reduction(TPR). Oxidative steam reforming of n-dodecane was conducted to compare the activity of the catalysts. The reforming temperature was varied from $500^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ at fixed $O_2$/C of 0.3, $H_2O$/C of 3.0 and GHSV of 5,000/h.Reduction peaks of metal oxide, surface CGO and bulk CGO were detected. Reduction temperature of metal oxide decreased over the bi-metallic catalysts. It is considered that interaction between metals leads to decrease interaction between metal and oxygen. On the other hands, reduction temperatures of surface CGO were dectected in the order of Pt-Ru > Pt-Ni > Pt. low reduction temperatures of surface CGO indicates the low activation energy for oxygen ion conduction to metal. Oxygen ion conduction is known as de-coking mechanism of ionic conducting supports such as CGO. In activity test, fuel conversion was in the same order of Pt-Ru > Pt-Ni > Pt. Especially, 100% of fuel conversion was obtained over Pt-Ru catalysts at $500^{\circ}C$.
In this paper we have presented the results for viscosity and self-diffusion constants of model systems for four liquid n-alkanes ($C_{12}, C_{20}, C_{32}, and C_{44}$) in a canonical ensemble at several temperatures using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The small chains of these n-alkanes are clearly $<{R_{ee}}^2>/6<{R_g}^2>>1$, which leads to the conclusion that the liquid n-alkanes over the whole temperatures considered are far away from the Rouse regime. Calculated viscosity ${\eta}$ and self-diffusion constants D are comparable with experimental results and the temperature dependence of both ${\eta}$ and D is suitably described by the Arrhenius plot. The behavior of both activation energies, $E_{\eta}$ and $E_D$, with increasing chain length indicates that the activation energies approach asymptotic values as n increases to the higher value, which is experimentally observed. Two calculated monomeric friction constants ${\zeta}$ and ${\zeta}_D$ give a correct qualitative trend: decrease with increasing temperature and increase with increasing chain length n. Comparison of the time auto-correlation functions of the end-to-end vector calculated from the Rouse model for n-dodecane ($C_{12}$) at 273 K and for n-tetratetracontane ($C_{44}$) at 473 K with those extracted directly from our MD simulations confirms that the short chain n-alkanes considered in this study are far away from the Rouse regime.
In the screening process of organic solvent tolerant bacteria showing good growth in media containing several kinds of organic solvents, one strain was isolated and identified as Bacillus sp. BCNU 5006. The strain was able to tolerate many organic solvents including benzene, toluene, xylene, octane, dodecane, butanol and ethylbenzene. Likewise, it could also utilize these solvents as the sole source of carbon with significant enzyme production. The lipolytic enzyme stability of Bacillus sp. BCNU 5006 was studied in the presence of several kinds of solvents at a 25% (v/v) concentration. The highest enzyme stability was observed in the presence of octane (107%), followed by ethylbenzene (88%), decane (86%), and chloroform (85%). Especially, BCNU 5006 lipase was determined to be more stable than immobilized enzyme (Novozyme 435) in the presence of octane, chloroform and xylene. This organic solvent tolerant Bacillus sp. BCNU 5006 could be expected as a potential bioremediation agent and biocatalyst for biodegradation and provide on organic-solvent-based enzymatic synthetic method in industrial chemical processes.

This study was to analyze the effect of mixed fuel composition and mass fraction on the characteristics of evaporating diesel spray and combustion under the various ambient conditions. The characteristics of vaporization distribution and combustion were visualized by laser induced fluorescent method and direct photography. The experiments were conducted in the constant volume vessel and rapid compression expansion machine with optical access. Multi-component fuels mixed i-octane, n-dodecane and n-hexadecane were injected the vessel and rapid compression expansion machine with electronically controlled common rail injector. Experimental results show that fuel vapor formed stratified distribution. And vaporization and diffusion are become actively increasing in mass fraction of low boiling point component. Consequently multi-component fuels were expected to control the evaporating behavior according to their suitable mass fraction.
The extraction of lactic acid by an emulsion liquid membrane (ELM), in batch and continuous mode, has been reported. On the basis of preliminary experiments, the optimum composition of the organic phase (membrane) is determined. When the SPan 80 is used as surfactant, the emulsion breakage exceeds 50%, but only 10% is obtained when the ECA4360 is used. The effects of surfactant, carrier and solute concentrations, phase volume ratio, and stirring speed on the extraction yield were examined and optimized. Surfactant, carrier and diluent used were ECA4360, trilaurylamine (TLA) and dodecane, respectively; 2-ethylhexane-1,3-diol (EHD) is used as a co-surfactant. Under optimal conditions, emulsion breaking is very low and the swelling is kept at its lowest level. Under the pH conditions of fermentation medium, the extraction yield is lower. A mixer-settler continuous system was used for testing these conditions. The residence time, the number of extraction stages and the stability of the emulsion were studied and optimized. The extraction yield obtained exceeds 90%.

$^{13}C$ spin-lattice relaxation times were measured for n-alkanes of moderate chain length, ranging from n-octane to n-dodecane, under the condition of proton broad-band decoupling within the temperature range of 248-318 K in order to gain some insight into basic features of segmental motions occurring in long chain ploymeric molecules. The NOE data showed that except for methyl carbon-13 dipole-dipole interactions between $^{13}C$ and directly bonded $^1H$ provide the major relaxation pathway, and we have analyzed the observed $T_1data$ on the basis of the internal rotational diffusion theory by Wallach and the conformational jump theory by London and Avitabile. The results show that the internal rotational diffusion constants about C-C bonds in the alkane backbone are all within the range of $10^9\;-10^10\;sec^{-1}$ in magnitude while the mean lifetimes for rotational isomers are all of the order of $10^{-11}\;-10^{-10}$ sec. Analysis by the L-A theory predicts that activation energies for conformational interconversion between gauche and trans form gradually increase as we move from the chain end toward the central C-C bond and they are within the range of 2-4 kcal/mol for all the compounds investigated.

Electrochemical decontamination process has been applied for recycle or self disposal with authorization of large amount of metallic wastes contaminated with uranium compounds such as $UO_2$, ammonium uranyl carbonate (AUC), ammonium di-uranate (ADU), and uranyl nitrate(UN) with tributylphosphate(TBP) and dodecane, which are generated by dismantling the contaminated system components and equipment of a retired uranium conversion plant in Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). Electrochemical decontamination for metallic wastes contaminated with uranium compounds was evaluated through the experiments on the electrolytic dissolution of stainless steel as the material of the system components in neutral salt electrolytes. The effects of type of neutral salt as the electrolyte, current density, and concentration of electrolyte on the dissolution of the materials were evaluated. Decontamination performance tests using the specimens taken from a uranium conversion plant were quite successful with the application electrochemical decontamination conditions obtained through the basic studies on the electrolytic dissolution of structural material of the system components.
Two experiments were conducted assessing the effects of presence or absence of rumen protozoa and dietary nitrate addition on rumen fermentation characteristics and in vitro methane production in Brahman heifers. The first experiment assessed changes in rumen fermentation pattern and in vitro methane production post-refaunation and the second experiment investigated whether addition of nitrate to the incubation would give rise to methane mitigation additional to that contributed by defaunation. Ten Brahman heifers were progressively adapted to a diet containing 4.5% coconut oil distillate for 18 d and then all heifers were defaunated using sodium 1-(2-sulfonatooxyethoxy) dodecane (Empicol). After 15 d, the heifers were given a second dose of Empicol. Fifteen days after the second dosing, all heifers were allocated to defaunated or refaunated groups by stratified randomisation, and the experiment commenced (d 0). On d 0, an oral dose of rumen fluid collected from unrelated faunated cattle was used to inoculate 5 heifers and form a refaunated group so that the effects of re-establishment of protozoa on fermentation characteristics could be investigated. Samples of rumen fluid collected from each animal using oesophageal intubation before feeding on d 0, 7, 14, and 21 were incubated for in vitro methane production. On d 35, 2% nitrate (as $NaNO_3$) was included in in vitro incubations to test for additivity of nitrate and absence of protozoa effects on fermentation and methane production. It was concluded that increasing protozoal numbers were associated with increased methane production in refaunated heifers 7, 14, and 21 d after refaunation. Methane production rate was significantly higher from refaunated heifers than from defaunated heifers 35 d after refaunation. Concentration and proportions of major volatile fatty acids, however, were not affected by protozoal treatments. There is scope for further reducing methane output through combining defaunation and dietary nitrate as the addition of nitrate in the defaunated heifers resulted in 86% reduction in methane production in vitro.
