  • The wave number 4 (wave-4) and wave number 3 (wave-3) longitudinal structures in the thermospheric neutral mass density are understood as tidal structures driven by diurnal eastward-propagating zonal wave number 3 (DE3) and wave number 2 (DE2) tides, respectively. However, those structures have been identified using data from limited time periods, and the consistency and recurrence of those structures have not yet been examined using long-term observation data. We examine the persistence of those structures by analyzing the neutral mass density data for the years 2001-2008 taken by the CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) satellite. During years of low solar activity, the amplitude of the wave-4 structure is pronounced during August and September, and the wave-4 phase shows a consistent eastward phase progression of $90^{\circ}$ within 24 h local time in different months and years. During years of high solar activity, the wave-4 amplitude is small and does not show a distinctive annual pattern, but the tendency of the eastward phase shift at a rate of $90^{\circ}$/24 h exists. Thus the DE3 signature in the wave-4 structure is considered as a persistent feature. The wave-3 structure is a weak feature in most months and years. The amplitude and phase of the wave-3 structure do not show a notable solar cycle dependence. Among the contributing tidal modes to the wave-3 structure, the DE2 amplitude is most pronounced. This result may suggest that the DE2 signature, although it is a weak signature, is a perceivable persistent feature in the thermosphere.

  • Purpose: The daily changes of accommodation at period 1 (08:00~10:00), period 2 (13:00~15:00) and period 3 (18:00~20:00) were surveyed with fifty two incipient presbyopia of from 38 to 49 years old. Methods: 52 incipient presbyopia subjects (30 men, 22 women) were classified into 4 groups (groupI: ${\geq}$ 7 hrs~group IV: < 3 hrs) according to near working amount. Their amplitude of accommodation, accommodative facility and relative amplitude of accommodation were inspected, respectively. Results: The amplitude of accommodation was measured to be the lowest for the groupI that near working time was the most during daily work, and the amplitude of accommodation of oculus dexter, oculus sinister and oculus uterque were the highest at period 2 in case of all the group I~IV. In the accommodative facility, it appeared that the oculus dexter, oculus sinister and oculus uterque of group I, oculus dexter and oculus sinister of group II, and oculus dexter, oculus sinister and oculus uterque of group III were the highest at period 2. The oculus uterque of group II and oculus dexter, oculus sinister and oculus uterque of group IV were the highest accommodative facility at period 3. It appeared that the negative relative accommodation was the highest at period 1 in case of all the group I~IV, and the positive relative accommodation was the highest at period 2 in case of the group I~III and was the highest at period 3 in case of the group IV. Conclusions: Because the difference of near working time affects the accommodation, it would become a help in solving the asthenopia symptom of the incipient presbyopia that opticians consider their near working time during daily work and take a checkup on their accommodation.

  • The Diurnal variation of galactic cosmic ray (GCR) flux intensity observed by the ground Neutron Monitor (NM) shows a sinusoidal pattern with the amplitude of $1{\sim}2%$ of daily mean. We carried out a statistical study on tendencies of the local times of GCR intensity daily maximum aad minimum. To test the influences of the solar activity and the location (cut-off rigidity) on the distribution in the local times of maximum and minimum GCR intensity, we have examined the data of 1996 (solar minimum) and 2000 (solar maximum) at the low-latitude Haleakala (latitude: 20.72 N, cut-off rigidity: 12.91 GeV) and the high-latitude Oulu (latitude: 65.05 N, cut-off rigidity: 0.81 GeV) NM stations. The most frequent local times of the GCR intensity daily maximum and minimum come later about $2{\sim}3$ hours in the solar activity maximum year 2000 than in the solar activity minimum you 1996. Oulu NM station whose cut-off rigidity is smaller has the most frequent local times of the GCR intensity maximum and minimum later by $2{\sim}3$ hours from those of Haleakala station. This feature is more evident at the solar maximum. The phase of the daily variation in GCR is dependent upon the interplanetary magnetic field varying with the solar activity and the cut-off rigidity varying with the geographic latitude.

  • Analyses of tidal observations and a numerical model of the $M_2$ and $M_4$ tides in the Uldolmok waterway located at the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula are described. This waterway is well known fer its strong tidal flows of up to more than 10 knots at the narrowest part of the channel. Harmonic analysis of the observed water level at five tidal stations reveals dramatic changes in the amplitude and phase of the shallow water constituents at the station near the narrowest part, while survey results show a decreasing trend in local mean sea levels toward the narrow section. It was also observed that the amplitudes of semi-diurnal constituents, $M_2$ and $S_2$ are diminishing toward the narrowest part of the waterway. Two-dimensional numerical modeling shows that the $M_2$ energy flux is dominated by the component coming from the eastern boundary. The $M_2$ energy is inward from both open boundaries and is transported toward the narrow region of the channel, where it is frictionally dissipated or transferred to other constituents due to a strong non-linear advection effect. It is also shown that the $M_4$ generation is strong around the narrow region, and the abrupt decrease in the M4 amplitude in the region is due to a cancellation of the locally generated M4 with the component propagated from open boundaries. The superposition of both propagated and generated M4 contributions also explains the discontinuity of the M4 phase lag in the region. The tide-induced residual sea level change and the regeneration effect of the $M_2$ tide through interaction with $M_4$ are also examined.

  • Analyzing the tide data taken at Kunsan inner and Outer ports, non-tidal and mean sea level and harmonic constants of major constituents are investigated to examine the effects of the dyke gate operation on the sea level change in Keum River estuary. Non-tidal and annual mean sea levels decrease at Kunsan Inner and Outer ports after the dyke gate operation, especially showing an abrupt drop of non-tidal sea level at Kunsan Inner port. This non-tidal sea level drop results in the mean sea level gradient change between the inner and outer port, which can be mainly explained in terms of the decrease of river discharge from the dyke. Amplitudes of the $M_2$ and $S_2$ tides at the Inner port increase after the dyke gate operation, showing an abrupt jump, and phases of both tides slightly decrease. Amplitude and phase of the $K_1$ and $O_1$ tides show slight changes after the dyke gate operation. This significant change of semi diurnal tide amplitude is believed as a result of superposition of incident tidal wave and reflected tidal wave from the dyke.

  • To investigate the influence of phenobarbital sodium on the action of morphine and on the diurnal rhythms of both opiate receptor binding and ${\beta}-endorphin$ contents, the amount of specifically bound $(^3H)$-morphine and immunoreactive ${\beta}-endorphin$ were measured in the midbrain of phenobarbital-treated rats at 4h intervals in a day. Rats were housed and adapted to a controlled cycle of either 12 h light-12 h dark or 24 h constant dark. After 3 weeks of adaptation, 0.5 ml of physiological saline or phenobarbital sodium (20mg/kg/day, i.p.) were administered twice a day for 2 weeks. Highly significant diurnal rhythms of opiate receptor binding and ${\beta}-endorphin$ were present in rat midbrain. In control group, the peak of maximum $(^3H)$-morphine binding was observed at 22:00 h, whereas the peak of ${\beta}-endorphin$ content was found at 06:00 h. Even in the absence of time cues these diurnal rhythms persisted, but they were highly modified with respect to the wave form as well as differences in the timing of peak and nadir. In the phenobarbital-treated group, these diurnal rhythms were also modified in shape, phase and amplitude, as well as in timing of peak and nadir. In this group, 24 h mean of opiate receptor binding was significantly decreased, while the 24 h mean level of ${\beta}-endorphin$ content was highly increased. However, Kd values in all experimental groups did not change. This indicates that differences in binding were not due to changes in the affinity, but in the number of binding sites. Statistical analysis of regression line indicates that changes of receptor binding were closely correlated with the changes of ${\beta}-endorphin$ content. These results suggest that phenobarbital may influence the action of morphine by changing the number of opiate receptors and that the modification of diurnal rhythm of opiate receptor by the agent is possibly due to changes of ${\beta}-endorphin$ content.

  • GPS observation has been performed at Khon Kaen in northeast Thailand to investigate the Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) change since August 2001 by using a Trimble 4000SSi receiver. The data obtained in the period from March to June in 2002 were processed by using CAMIT software to obtain the Zenith Tropospheric Delay (ZTD) at every one hour referring to some IGS stations around Thailand. We estimated the Zenith Hydrostatic Delay (ZHD) at every three hours with barometer data at Khon Kaen of Thai Meteorological Department, The Zenith Wet Delay (ZWD) was obtained by subtracting ZHD from ZTD and PWV can be calculated from ZTD. The results obtained shows that PWV changes with a large amplitude in March and April before the monsoon onset, and also we can see steep PWV increases before rain and decreases after rain. In May and June after the onset, the PWV is almost constant to be 60 to 70 mm, but there is a semi-diurnal change which has high PWV values at about 8 and 20 o'clock in local time.

  • The size-resolved number concentrations of aerosols ranging from 0.3 to 25 $mu extrm{m}$ were observed in Seoul and Anmyondo in the west coast of Korea during an Yellow Sand phenomenon in April 1998. Number size distributions of aerosols observed in both places are characterized by decrease in small particles of diameter less than 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and increase in large size between 1.35 and 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in heavy dust period. For particles in this size range, there was a good correlation between number concentrations observed in both places during the Yellow Sand episode. On the other hand, the number of small particles less than 0.82${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ decreased, but the correlation between these particles in both places was enhanced during more intense dust period. The number of coarse particle larger than 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ showed a distince diurnal variation without a significant change in amplitude, which was more visible in Seoul. It suggests that these coarse particles were more affected by local sources. Form these results, it was range of 1~10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ originated possibly from the dust source regions and the source signature depended on the degree of dust intensity.

  • Temporal and spatial fluctuations of surface water temperature in Yeosu Bay for the period from 2010 to 2011 were studied using the data from temperature monitoring buoys deployed at 32 stations in the south coast of Korea. Temperatures in the northern part of the bay are higher in summer and lower in winter than in the southern part of the bay. The lowest and highest temperature of the annual mean are found at the eastern coast of POSCO and at the west of Dae Island, respectively. Cold water masses appear at estuarine area when the discharge of Sumjin river is affluent. Amplitude of temperature fluctuation whose period is less than semi-diurnal is largest at Hadong coast and around Dae Island. Spectral analysis of surface water temperature shows a significant peak at a periodic fluctuation of 0.5 to 24 days and about 15-day period of predominant fluctuation is most frequent in Yeosu Bay. From the cross-correlation analysis of temperature fluctuations, Yeosu Bay can be classified into six areas; the south area affected by South Sea of Korea, the mixed area in the center of the bay, the estuarine area affected by river discharge at the north of the bay, the hot waste water area near Hadong coast, the area around Dae Island and the area near Noryang Channel affected by the water in Jinju Bay, respectively.

  • The tides in the Saemanguem Area, the western coast of Korea have been examined based on simulations with barotropic depth-integrated model. As a first step tidal computations were performed with open-boundary sea level forcing from four major constitutents ($M_2$, $S_2$, $K_1$, and $O_1$). Subsequently the established model was utilized to investigate the effect of construction of tidal barriers for Saemanguem development plan on the existing tidal regime. It has been shown that tide of semi-diurnal constituents may be reduced to 2-7 cm in amplitude along the frontal area of proposed barrier. In connection with above changes the tidal current regime may be subjected to significant reduction in intensity. thus suggesting the high possibility of sedimentation along the frontal region of tidal barrier.
