  • The electric wave propagation characteristics of electromagnetic field by induction current shows a nonlinear distinction in the metal but linear on air. This paper is written about the magnetic transmission distinction in the metalic tube, which wrapped the center axis by the same direction. The electromagnetic field made by the transmission signal is transferred from the transmission coil area toward the receiving coil by the magnetic diffusion. So, it is different magnetic flux around the coil with one in the remote field area. Analyzing such a complex magnetic characteristic, we verified this theory by the vector analysis and presented eddy current mechanism and analytical model about magnetic distribution in the remote field area. This magnetic distribution rate in metal body will be very useful in the nondestructive inspection of the eddy current in remote field which is recently rising as a new technology.

영어 나열형 고립 단어 읽기에서 어말 폐쇄음의 파열 양상 및 그 음성적 상관성 (Aspects of the word-final stop releasing and its phonetic correlates in reading the English isolated words enumerated)

  • This experimental research shows that, in reading of the English isolated words that are enumerated, the releasing of the word-final stop is employed for signaling enumeration in company with the well-known intonational pattern for it. Furthermore, this study tries to find the conceivable phonetic correlates of the releasing of the stop in word-final position, focusing on the association of the stop releasing/nonreleasing with i) the POA (Place of Articulation) distinction of the word-final stop, ii) the various qualities of the preceding vowel placed before the final stop, and iii) the voice distinction of the stop in the word-final position.

Non-tensed VP Coordination in Korean: Structure and Meaning

  • Lakoff(1986) claim that sequential fading alone suffices to sanction ATB violations cannot be supported in Korean verbal coordination of TP, since extraction from the conjunction of TP in Korean is impossible regardless of whether the conjuncts are interpreted sequentially or non-sequentially. However, ATB violations are allowed in the coordination of Non-TP, only when the conjuncts are interpreted sequentially. 1 will argue that Non-TP, in coordination are ambiguous between a conjunct and adjunct analysis. Furthermore, a claim made here is that the distinction between the sequential and non-sequential reading in Non-TP coordination is a distinction made by syntax, while the sequential vs. non-sequential reading in TP coordination is derived from semantics or pragmatics.

Contrast Enhancement using Histogram Equalization with a New Neighborhood Metrics

  • In this paper, a novel neighborhood metric of histogram equalization (HE) algorithm for contrast enhancement is presented. We present a refinement of HE using neighborhood metrics with a general framework which orders pixels based on a sequence of sorting functions which uses both global and local information to remap the image greylevels. We tested a novel sorting key with the suggestion of using the original image greylevel as the primary key and a novel neighborhood distinction metric as the secondary key, and compared HE using proposed distinction metric and other HE methods such as global histogram equalization (GHE), HE using voting metric and HE using contrast difference metric. We found that our method can preserve advantages of other metrics, while reducing drawbacks of them and avoiding undesirable over-enhancement that can occur with local histogram equalization (LHE) and other methods.

Role of amplitude and pitch in the perception of Japanese stop length contrasts

  • This study presents experiments which examined the role of amplitude and fundamental frequency (f0) in the phonetic perception of short versus long stop length contrasts in Japanese (e.g., [t] vs. [tt]). Stop length contrasts are normally characterized by differences in the duration of stop closures. However, closure duration can be unreliable as a perceptual cue when one considers variability in the rate at which people speak. Acoustically, the amplitude and f0 of the vowel following stop consonants are known to covary with the length distinction of stops in Japanese. Given this fact, the current study examined amplitude and f0 as potential secondary cues to the distinction. The results indicate that even though both amplitude and f0 are robust correlates, Japanese listeners do not use these cues in categorizing short versus long stops.

  • This study aims to select eight books to see if "potential complement" is sufficiently acquired and properly used in Chinese conversation textbooks, explore the reasons and problems of learners' errors through analysis, and briefly suggest textbook compilation and teaching. Twelve criteria were established and analyzed, including the concept and format of "potential complement", layout order, location of objects, three types of forms, distinction from auxiliary verb "能" and distinction between "能+V+結果補語". Some of the results of the study are simply as follows. All eight textbooks focus only on "possibility," missing an important part of "the impact of objective conditions" that the term "potential complement" does not contain. This is certainly enough to cause confusion for learners. A poor understanding of the concept of "potential complement" results in identifying it with the possible auxiliary verb "能", and incorrect mixing because it does not know exactly what the difference is. Most of the textbooks compiled in China place a high importance on "potential complement". This means that Chinese people often use "potential complement" in real life. on the other hand relatively Korean textbooks do not deal with "potential complement" relatively importantly.

Attentional modulation on multiple acoustic cues in phonological processing of L2 sounds

  • The present study examines how a cognitive attention affects Korean learners of English (L2) in perceiving the English stop voicing distinction (/d/-/t/). This study tested the effect of attentional distractor on primary and non-primary acoustic cues, focusing on the role of Voice Onset Time (VOT) and fundamental frequency (F0). Using the dual-task paradigm, 28 Korean adult learners of English participated in the stop identification task carried with (distractor) and without (no-distractor) arithmetic calculation. Results showed that when distracted, Korean learners' sensitivity to VOT decreased as priorly reported with native English speakers. Furthermore, as F0 is a primary cue for a L1 Korean stop laryngeal contrast, its role in L2 English voicing distinction was also affected by a distractor, without compensating for the reduced VOT sensitivity. These findings suggest that flexible use of multiple cues in L1 is not necessarily beneficial for L2 phonological processing when coping with a adverse listening condition.

A New Record and Redescription of Zygophylax (Hydrozoa: Leptothecata: Zygophylacidae) from Korea

  • A taxonomic examination of Zygophylax species collected from the subtidal zone of Seongsan Ilchulbong in the east of Jeju Island and a reexamination of the voucher specimens previously described as Z. biarmata were conducted. Through this study, the species previously reported as Z. biarmata in Korea was redescribed as Z. pacifica, and the specimens from Seongsan Ilchulbong were confirmed to be Z. biarmata. Zygophylax biarmata has two nematothecae on the apophysis of the hydrotheca, a clear distinction between the apophysis and the pedicel of the hydrotheca, and much smaller hydrothecae, whereas Z. pacifica has a single nematotheca on the apophysis of the hydrotheca, no distinction between the apophysis and the pedicel of the hydrotheca, and much larger hydrothecae. As a result of this study, a total of two species belonging to genus Zygophylax have been reported in the hydrozoan fauna of Korea to date.

DTV와 CR 시스템의 구별을 위한 효과적 알고리즘 (Study on Effective Sensing Algorithm for Distinction between DTV and CR Systems)

  • 주파수 부족 및 비효율적 활용을 완화시키기 위해 제안된 무선인지시스템은 기존의 1차 사용자에게 대한 간섭을 주지 않도록 하면서 유휴주파수를 사용하게 하는 기술로서 최근 주목받고 있는 차세대 이동통신 시스템이다. 최근 FCC는 실질적으로 TV대역에 무선인지 시스템을 적용하도록 하면서 관련된 규정을 개정하였고 TV대역의 유휴주파수에 대하여 고정기기 및 개인 휴대기기에 대한 사용을 허가하도록 방침을 정하였으며 2009년 DTV로 전환 완료이 후 해당 기기들의 사용은 본격화 될 것이다. TV 대역 개방에 따른 DTV 신호의 검출을 위해 DTV신호의 센싱 방법중 하나인 파일럿 센싱을 적용하면 파일럿의 위치에 다른 CR 시스템의 신호가 나타났을 때 DTV 신호와 CR 시스템의 신호를 혼동하게 되어 오검출을 하게 되는 문제점이 발생한다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해 본문에서는 PN511 sequence를 이용하여 DTV와 CR시스템간의 구별하도록 제안한다.

과학 이론과 과학 법칙의 차이에 대한 고등학생들의 인식 연구 (A Preliminary Study on High School Students' Understanding of the Distinction between Scientific Theories and Scientific Laws)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 학생들이 과학 이론과 과학 법칙의 차이를 어떻게 이해하고 있는가를 알아보는 것이다. 과학 지식의 서로 다른 종류인 과학 이론과 과학 법칙에 대해서 올바르게 이해하고 있는 것은 과학의 본성을 이해하는 데 있어서 매우 중요함에도 불구하고 이에 대한 연구는 충분히 이루어지지 않고 있기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 서울 지역의 고등학교 학생 32명을 대상으로 개방형 질문으로 구성된 설문을 실시하였다. 조사 결과, 학생들은 '과학 이론은 아직 증명되지 않은 것이며, 과학 법칙은 확실히 증명된 것이다.' 및 '과학 이론이 충분한 증거가 뒷받침되어 증명되면 법칙이 된다.'는 오개념을 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 아울러 학생들이 알고 있는 과학 이론의 상당수가 지구과학 과목에 포함되고, 알고 있는 과학 법칙의 대부분이 물리, 화학 과목에 포함되어 있는 것으로 미루어, 지구과학을 덜 과학적인 학문으로 잘못 인식하고 있을 가능성도 보였다. 따라서 과학 이론과 과학 법칙에 대한 분명한 차이를 이해하는 것은 지구과학에 대한 올바른 인식에도 도움을 줄 것으로 기대된다.
