  • This study proposes a topic distillation algorithm that ranks the relevant sites selected from retrieved web pages, and evaluates the performance of the algorithm. The algorithm calculates the topic score of a site using its hierarchical structure. The TREC .GOV test collection and a set of TREC-2004 queries for topic distillation task are used for the experiment. The experimental results showed the algorithm returned at least 2 relevant sites in top ten retrieval results. We peformed an in-depth analysis of the relevant sites list provided by TREC-2004 to find out that the definition of topic distillation was not strictly applied in selecting relevant sites. When we re-evaluated the retrieved sites/sub-sites using the revised list of relevant sites, the performance of the proposed algorithm was improved significantly.

  • The aroma concentrates from mold fermented sausages were isolated by steam distillation and simultaneous steam-distillation-extraction(SDE). methods. Quantitative estimation of the aroma concentrates in mold fermented sausages was carried out by using GC-MC. Mold fermented sausages were manufactured into two types. The first was manufactured with starter culture containing Lactobacillus plantarum and Staphylococcus carnosus(LP). The second was manufactured with starter culture containing L. curvatus and S. carnosus(LC). The aroma concentrates containing hexanoic acid and 2-butyl-2-octenal were identified in mold fermented sausages immediately after manufacture. After 28 days, the volatile flavor components from LP and LC were determined to be 14 (trimethylsilylester of hexadecanoic acid and 2-methyl-3-octanol, etc.) and 16 substances(hexadecanoic acid and 1-hexadecanol, etc.), respectively. The distribution of aroma concentrates in LP and LC was different, but their panel test placed them in similarity.

  • The contaminated engine oil by fuel can intimidate driver safety due to vehicle problems such as engine abrasion, fire and sudden unintended acceleration. In this study, we investigate various functional properties of the engine oil contaminated with fuel. The test results indicated that the engine oil contaminated with fuel had relatively low values of the flash point, pour point, density, kinematic viscosity and cold cranking simulator. Furthermore, a four ball test suggested that the contaminated engine oil increased wear scar due to the poor lubricity. Moreover, SIMDIST (simulated distillation) using ASTM D2887 was applied to analyze fuel characteristics in an engine oil. The SIMDIST analysis result showed a lower carbon number, and the fuel was detected at an earlier retention time than that of using engine oil in chromatogram. Also, it is possible to quantitatively analyze for fuel contents in the engine oil. The SIMDIST method for the diagnosis of oil conditions can be used whether the fuel was involved or not, instead of analyzing other physical properties that require various analytical instruments, large volumes of oil samples, and long analysis time.

  • For developing the cryogenic air separation unit, it requires some technology such as basic process design. equipment design and manufacturing based on the cryogenic physical properties and separation theory. In this study, we developed a process and equipment for producing high purity nitrogen which has the production capacity of 1600N㎥/h under 1 ppm $O_2$ and $H_2O$. Also we found that the number of theoretical plate(NTP) of distillation column was 44 and maximum nitrogen recovery ration of this process was 42% from the process simulation. The performance test was also carried out for the nitrogen recovery ratio and equipment efficiency. The results showed that the optimum nitrogen recovery was 41% and the maximum equipment efficiency was attained.

  • Currently, no guidelines exist regarding the maximum residues of pesticides in edible oil which is a processed food commonly consumed in Korea. This lack of guidelines hinders the evaluation of the safety of edible oil in terms of pesticide contamination. In this study, an analysis method based on heat distillation and GC-MS/MS was established by optimizing the extraction and purification procedure for 68 pesticides. Important variables in the thermal distillation procedure included heating temperature and time, and we found the nitrogen flow rate as a mobile phase and the type of dissolving solvent were not considerably affected. The determination coefficient (R2) of the residual pesticide was 0.99 or higher, and the quantitative limit (LOQ) was 0.01-0.02 mg/L. The average recovery rate (n=5) was 66.1-120.0% and the relative standard deviation was lower than ±10% when 68 pesticides were spiked at concentrations of 0.01-0.02, 0.1, and 0.5 mg/L. In addition, the within-laboratory precision was less than ±11%, meeting the Korea Food and Drug Safety Evaluation Institute's Guidelines on Standard Procedures for Preparing Food Testing Methods (2016). Therefore, the test method developed in this study can be used as a test method for managing the safety of the residual pesticide concentration in edible oil.

  • It is necessary to develop an effective waste salt treatment technology for the minimization of radioactive waste generation from the pyroprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. For this reason, the separation characteristics of NdCl3 from LiCl-KCl eutectic salt in a reactive distillation process using Li2CO3 or K2CO3 were observed. NdCl3 was converted into oxychloride (NdOCl) or oxide (Nd2O3) in the reaction model between NdCl3 and the carbonates using HSC-Chemistry, and this result was confirmed in the reactive distillation test of the LiCl-KCl-NdCl3 system using the carbonates. Based on these results, the reactive distillation process conditions were determined to separate NdCl3 into an oxide form (Nd2O3) which can be easily fabricated into a final waste form.

  • Recently, research on the application of artificial intelligence in the chemical process has been increasing rapidly. However, overfitting is a significant problem that prevents the model from being generalized well to predict unseen data on test data, as well as observed training data. Cross validation is one of the ways to solve the overfitting problem. In this study, the time-series cross validation method was applied to optimize the number of batch and epoch in the hyperparameters of the prediction model for the 2,3-BDO distillation process, and it compared with K-fold cross validation generally used. As a result, the RMSE of the model with time-series cross validation was lower by 9.06%, and the MAPE was higher by 0.61% than the model with K-fold cross validation. Also, the calculation time was 198.29 sec less than the K-fold cross validation method.
