The purpose of this study was to characterize the aroma of green tea blended with dried citrus fruits containing peeler. Whether middle or low grade green tea is consumed does not have an influence on health benefits, but it does havean influence on flavor. Therefore, two kinds of citrus fruits (mandarin orange and citron) were used to infuse the teas with aromatic flavors. This process turned unflavored tea into special tea with a good color and preferable flavor. Aroma compounds were extracted by SDE method. The concentrated aroma extracts were analyzed and identified by GC and GC-MS. The main aroma components of the green tea blended with mandarin orange were limonene (72.18%), (Z)-ocimene (8.29%), phenyl acetaldehyde (6.15%), ${\gamma}$-terpinene (5.14%), ${\beta}$-elemene (1.80%) and linalool (1.00%). The main aroma components of the green tea blended with citron were limonene (71.74%), ${\gamma}$-terpinene (9.76%), (Z)-ocimene (5.38%), (E)-ocimene (4.36%), linalool (1.00%) and ${\beta}$-mycrene (0.87%). The aromas of green tea blended with dried citrus fruits were mainly mono - and sesquiterpenic compounds.
For treating a huge amount of plastic waste with the environment problem, pyrolysis of plastic waste into alternative fuel oil is one or important issue in recycling methods. This study was introduced over the trend or generation of plastic waste, in Korea pyrolysis technology in domestic and foreign countries, basic technology in pyrolysis process and new technology of pyrolysis developed in KIER (Korea Institute of Energy research). The characteristics of process developed in KIER are the continuous loading treatment or mixed plastic waste with an automatic control system, the minimization of wax production by circulation pyrolysis system in non-catalytic reactor, the reuse of gas produced and the oil recovery from sludge generated in pyrolysis plant, which have greatly the advantage economically and environmetally. The experiment result data in 300 ton/yr pilot plant showed about $81\;wt\%$ liquid yield for 3 days continuous reaction time, and also the boiling point distribution of light oil (LO) and heavy oil (HO) produced in distillation tower was a little higher than that of commercial gasoline and diesel, respectively.
Following supplementation with organic acids (acetic, citric, and lactic acids), the pH of the alcohol mash changed from 4.2 control to 3.73-3.97 supplemented, the acidity from 5.06 to 8.13-9.98, and the alcohol content from 17.8 to 17.0-17.8%. Protease activity decreased owing to the pH change, and the total nitrogen content decreased by 13.1-36.9% following organic acid supplementation. Organic acid supplementation did not affect the distillation efficiency; however, thiobarbituric acid values in the crude distillate (40%) decreased 2.2-3.6 fold following supplementation with citric acid and lactic acid. The total isobutanol (B), isoamyl alcohol (A), and 1-propanol (P) contents in each soju (25%) supplemented with organic acid were 1,041.47, 979.50, and 961.48 ppm, respectively, which were higher than those in the control soju (935.27 ppm). The A/P, A/B, and B/P ratios of soju were altered and the acetaldehyde content decreased following supplementation with the organic acid.
One bacterium with high proteinase production and spore-forming ability was isolated from korean traditional soybean paste(doenjang). The isolated strain was identified as Bacillus subtilis, based on gram-staining, biochemical properties and l6S rRNA gene sequencing, and designated as B. subtilis DJI. Its growth rate was very fast, and it reached its stationary phase within 9 h, and then started to form spores. Bacterial-koji and doenjang were prepared using B. subtilis DJI. Chemical components of the doenjang were determined after 2 months of aging period: amino nitrogen 507 mg%, crude protein 14.3%, crude fat 4.8% and water 54.9%. The composition of total and free amino acids and their ratios of doenjang were changed during the aging period. Among total amino acids in DJI doenjang, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, leucine and arginine were the major amino acids. The fibrinolytic activities of DJI doenjang and traditional doenjangs were 909.7 units/ml and $363.3{\sim}618.6\;units/ml$, respectively. Flavor compounds of DJI doenjang and traditional doenjang were extracted by SDE(simultaneous steam distillation and extraction), and analyzed by GC/MS; DJI doenjang possessed the typically favorable flavor compounds in traditional korean doenjang, with reduced off-flavor compounds.

For treating a huge amount of plastic waste with the environment problem, pyrolysis of plastic waste into alternative fuel oil is one of important issue in recycling methods. This study was introduced over the trend of generation of plastic waste, pyrolysis technology in domestic and foreign countries, basic technology in pyrolysis process and new technology of pyrolysis developed in KIER (Korea Institute of Energy Research). The characteristics of process developed in KIER are the continuous loading treatment of mixed plastic waste with an automatic control system, the minimization of wax production by circulation pyrolysis system in non-catalytic reactor, the reuse of gas produced and the oil recovery from sludge generated in pyrolysis plant, which have greatly the advantage economically and environmetally. Since the air contamination by air pollutants from indoor construction materials and daily supplies has been increased in recent decades, the public interest of using environmentally friendly products and improving indoor air quality also attracted much attention. As known as effects of phytoncide, it has been used in construction materials and daily supplies with various method. In this study, hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) was used because of its high contents of phytoncide. The leaves of hinoki cypress (C. obtusa), which generated by pruning, were extracted by steam distillation, and then used as humidification water source. Volatile organic compound (VOC) from C. obtusa were characterized by GC-MS (Gas chromatograph-Mass spectrophotometry) in order to evaluate effects and risks of using C. obtusa extracts. Total 86 types and 116 types of VOC were detected from distilled water (DI water) and C. obtusa extracts, respectively. Aromatic compounds (DI water: 13 types, 53%; C. obtusa extracts: 13 types, 38%) and terpenoids (DI water: 16 types, 23%; C. obtusa extracts: 23 types, 33%) were detected more diverse types and higher amount than other compound categories. No additional aromatic compounds were found from C. obtusa extracts, so C. obtusa extracts did not affect on aromatic compounds emission. However, in terpenoids, total amount of emission from C. obtusa extracts increased to 33% from 23% (DI water) and 7 more types of compounds were found from C. obtusa extracts. Especially, from C. obtusa extracts, terpinen-4-ol was emitted 71 times higher than DI water. During the humidification with C. obtusa extracts, emitted terpenoid compounds were well known for higher anti-bacterial, anti-insect, and anti-septic functions, but also these had anti-hypertensive and anti-cancer activities. Therefore, terpenoids from C. obtusa extracts can help to improve public health by using humidifier.
This study was carried out to find the possibility of use of Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) for extracting the volatile aroma compounds in the five aromatic plants (Agastache rugosa O. Kuntze, Mentha arvensis Linne, Thymus quinquecostatus Celakovsky, Elsholtzia splendens Nakai, Schizonepta tenuifolia Briquet) belongs to the Labiatae. In the result of the analysis, the volatile aroma compounds were mainly composed monoterpene alcohol (linanol, menthol, ${\alpha}-terpineol$, borneol), monoterpene ketone (limonene, menthone) and sesquiterpene (trans-caryophyllene,${\delta}-cadinene)$. The volatile aroma compounds of Agastache rugosa O. Kuntze and Mentha arvensis Linne were extracted by SPME more identified than the SDE. However, Schizonepta tenuifolia Briquet more identified by the SDE and in Elsholtzia splendens Nakai similar to the SDE. Especially, the SPME showed the sesquiterpene contents was more than the SDE. The major volatile aroma compounds were difference but the composition of those between the SPME and the SDE showed no difference. Within the results, the SPME showed the most convenient and a rapid extraction method to analysis of the volatile aroma compounds.

Volatile flavor components in whole edible portion, stem and leaf of fresh angelica (Angelica keiskei Koidz) were extracted by SDE (simultaneous steam distillation and extraction) method using the mixture of n-pentane and diethylether (1:1, v/v) as an extract solvent and analyzed by GC-FID and GC/MS. Identification of the volatile flavor components in aroma concentrate was mostly based on the RI of GC and mass spectrum of GC/MS. Twenty five hydrocarbons, 15 alcohols, 3 aldehydes, 6 esters, 2 ketones and 1 acid were identified in the whole edible portion of angelica. Twenty hydrocarbons, 13 alcohols, 4 esters and 1 acid were identified in the stem sample of angelica. Nineteen hydrocarbons, 11 alcohols, 4 aldehydes, 6 esters, 2 ketones and 1 acid were identified in the leaf sample of angelica. ${\gamma}-Terpinene$, germacrene B, ${\delta}-3-carene$, cis-3-hexen-1-ol, ${\gamma}-muurolene$ and ${\gamma}-elemene$ were the main components in each edible portions of angelica. The terpenoid compounds in volatile flavor components identified from whole edible portion, stem and leaf samples were confirmed as 75.76%, 86.42% and 78.21%, respectively. These results suggest that terpenoid compounds have a great effect on the flavor characteristics of angelica.

Because of the water scarcity caused by the increase of salinity in the underground water, seawater desalination stands out as one of the most promising solution. As there are so much energy costs in operating desalination plants, new hybrid process which is more effective should be researched. A geothermal VMD (vacuum membrane distillation) hybrid process is a competitive alternative for seawater desalination. Because geothermal energy has significant characteristics of high capacity factor to operate the power plant at full capacity for 24 hour per day, it can be a priority heat source of VMD superior to any other renewable energies such as solar and wind power. In this study, we design a geothermal VMD hybrid process, analyze it economically and finally compare the result with a case of conventional VMD process. Geothermal VMD hybrid process generates $23,822,409 of NPV (net present value) more than the conventional VMD process in case of 5% discount rate. The break-even point between these processes is 5.36 year. Sensitivity analysis indicates that steam cost is the most decisive influence variable to the economic outcome.
