  • In this paper, we propose a new method to convert a low-resolution depth map into its high-resolution one called distance transform-based bilateral upsampling. Since the proposed method controls the spatial domain weighting function based on distance transform values of the depth map, it increases the input depth map resolution while preserving edge sharpness. The proposed method is composed of three main steps: distance transform, spatial weighting control, and image interpolation. Experimental results show that our method outperforms the conventional bilateral upsampling in terms of the quality of output depth maps.

  • During depth data acquisition and transmission, the quality of depth maps is usually degraded by physical noise and coding error. In this paper, a new joint bilateral filter based on the common distance transform is presented to enhance the low-quality depth map. The proposed method determines the amount of exploitable color data according to distance transform values of depth and color pixels. Consequently, the proposed filter minimizes noise in the depth map while suppressing visual artifacts of joint bilateral filtering. Experimental results show that our method outperforms other conventional methods in terms of noise reduction and visual artifact suppression.

  • In this paper, we present an improved method to calculate Euclidean distance transform based on Guan's method. Compared to the conventional method, Euclidean distance can be computed faster using Guan's method when the number of feature pixels is small; however, overall computational cost increases proportional to the number of feature pixels in an image. To overcome this problem, we divide feature pixels into two groups: boundary feature pixels (BFPs) and non-boundary feature pixels (NFPs). Here BFPs are defined as those in the 4-neighborhood of foreground pixels. Then, only BFPs are used to calculate the Voronoi diagram resulting in a Euclidean distance map. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method takes 40 Percent less computing time on average than Guan's method. To prove the performance of the proposed method, the computing time of Euclidean distance map by proposed method is compared with the computing time of Guan's method in 16 images that are binary and the size of 512${\times}$512.

  • The Cellular Noninear Networks structure for Distance Transform(DT) and the robust optical flow detection algorithm based on the DT are proposed. For some applications of optical flows such as target tracking and camera ego-motion computation, correct optical flows at a few feature points are more useful than unreliable one at every pixel point. The proposed algorithm is for detecting the optical flows on the trajectories only of the feature points. The translation lengths and the directions of feature movements are detected on the trajectories of feature points on which Distance Transform Field is developed. The robustness caused from the use of the Distance Transform and the easiness of hardware implementation with local analog circuits are the properties of the proposed structure. To verify the performance of the proposed structure and the algorithm, simulation has been done about various images under different noisy environment.

  • The Rapid transform is used in the recognition of Korean (Consonant) characters. The test pattern is represented by two gray levels (0 and 1). A 2-dimensinal rapid transform of the test pattern is computed. Feature selection is carried out in the Rapid transform domain. These features are used with the corresponding features of the template patterns in features of the template patterns in computing the Euclidian distance function and the decision is made based on the minimum distance criterion. Experimental results show that recognition rate is 94%.

  • This paper presents a method for detecting damage in irregular 2D and 3D continuum structures based on combination of wavelet transform (WT) with fuzzy inference system (FIS) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Many damage detection methods study regular structures. This method studies irregular structures and doesn't need response of healthy structures. First the damaged structure is analyzed with finite element methods, and damage response is obtained at the finite element points that have irregular distance, secondly the FIS, which is optimized by PSO is used to obtain responses at points, having equal distance by response at those points that previously obtained by the finite element methods. Then a 2D (for 2D continuum structures) or a 3D (for 3D continuum structures) matrix is performed by equal distance point response. Thirdly, by applying 2D or 3D wavelet transform on 2D or 3D matrix that previously obtained by FIS detail matrix coefficient of WT is obtained. It is shown that detail matrix coefficient can determine the damage zone of the structure by perturbation in the damaged area. In order to illustrate the capability of proposed method some examples are considered.

  • Dual-wavelength holography has a better axial range than single-wavelength holography, allowing unambiguous phase imaging. The size of a reconstructed image depends on the reconstruction distance and wavelength. The two phase image sizes of different wavelength holograms should be the same in order to apply dual-wavelength holography. The Fresnel-Bluestein transform method is proposed to eliminate the dependence on the reconstruction distance and wavelength. We found that the Fresnel-Bluestein transform is very useful for making different reconstructed image sizes experimentally. Also we applied the Fresnel-Bluestein transform to make the same reconstruction image size in dual wavelength holography.
