  • Lead and cadmium were analyzed with different pretreatemnt methods. Paddy soil and wastewater sludge samples were used and the result was compared each other. Pretreatment method affected the concentration obtained from samples significantly. Large difference was illustrated between the results. The concentration by 0.1N HCl extraction method, an official analytical method for soil and solid wastes, was far lower than those by the EPA3050B and mixed-acid digestion methods. The reason might be that metals associated with organics and silicates are not easily extracted by 0.1N HCl, while digestion methods using strong acids and high temperature dissolved all the elements in the samples. It implies that pretreatment method should be specified in addition to concentration on the report of metal analysis for environmental samples. Acid digestion methods are not necessarily good because the concentration obtained does not represent the natural condition which is our concern in many cases. The 0.1N HCl extraction method does not fully represent the natural condition either. The metals associated with organics will be extracted eventually as organics decompose with time. Therefore, proper pretreatment and analytical methods should be developed for specific purpose, and their standardization is recommended.

  • This study investigated removal characteristics of organic matters in pretreatment and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane processes for seawater desalination. Also, the influence of the changes in characteristics of organic matters on the membrane fouling was assessed. The pretreatment processes included dual media filtration (DMF), pressurized membrane filtration (MF), and submerged membrane filtration (SMF). Turbidity, UV absorption at 254 nm, dissolved organic carbon, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), fluorescence excitation emission matrix (FEEM), and transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) in raw and processed waters were analyzed. Ions and minerals were not removed by any pretreatment process tested, but were removed over 99% through the RO membrane process. Hydrophobic organics, which can play major role in organic membrane fouling, were relatively readily removed compared with hydrophilic ones. Membrane based pretreatment such as MF and SMF exhibited better removals of organics than conventional DMF. As the levels of organics in pretreated water decreased, the silt density index (SDI) decreased. MF treated water exhibited the lowest SDI value; this is possibly due to the lowest TEP ($0.1-0.4{\mu}m$) concentrations.

  • This study investigated the influence of characteristics of natural organic matter (NOM) on the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), and proposed the control strategies of DBPs formation in a drinking water treatment plant using lake water in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The fluorescence excitation-emission matrix analysis results revealed that the origins of NOM in raw waters to the plant were a mixture of terrestrial and microbial sources. Molecular size distributions and removals of NOM fractions were evaluated with a liquid chromatography-organic carbon detector (LC-OCD) analysis. Humic substances and low molecular weight organics were dominant fractions of NOM in the raw water. High molecular weight organics were relatively easier to remove through coagulation/precipitation than low molecular weight organics. The concentrations of DBPs formed by pre-chlorination increased through the treatment processes in regular sequence due to longer reaction time. Chloroform (74%) accounts for the largest part of trihalomethanes, followed by bromodichloromethane (22%) and dibromochloromethane (4%). Dichloroacetic acid (50%) and trichloroacetic acid (48%) were dominant species of haloacetic acids, and brominated species such as dibromoacetic acid (2%) were minimal or none. Dichloroacetonitrile (60%) accounts for the largest part of haloacetonitriles, followed by bromochloroacetonitrile (30%) and dibromoacetonitrile (10%). The formation of DBPs were reduced by 16~44% as dosages of pre-chlorine decreased. Dosages of pre-chlorine was more contributing to DBPs formation than variations of dissolved organic contents or water temperature.

  • This study examined the separation characteristics of some of the most commonly used disperse, reactive and acid dyes by nanofiltration membrane. The chemical characteristics of three major dye solutions such as chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total organic carbon, color, suspended solids, total dissolved solids, conductivity were investigated in this work. Experiments showed that the types of dye had a significant effect on both permeate flux and rejection efficiencies mainly due to the differences among their chemical structures and natures. Especially, the nanofiltration of reactive dye solutions showed higher permeate flux, lower total dissolved solid rejection efficiency and higher organics rejection efficiency than those of disperse dye solutions.

  • The objectives of this research are to (1) observe changes in particle size distribution due to formation of microflocs during coagulation process (2) identify the membrane fouling potential on cross flow system (3) investigate the mechanism of membrane fouling. The rate of flux decline for the hydrophobic membrane was significantly greater than for the hydrophilic membrane, regardless of pretreatment conditions. The pretreatment of the raw water significantly reduced the fouling of the UF membrane. Also, the rate of flux decline for the hydrophobic membrane was considerably greater than for the hydrophilic membrane. Applying coagulation process before membrane filtration showed not only reducing membrane fouling, but also improving the removal of dissolved organic materials that might otherwise not be removed by the membrane. That is, during the mixing period, substantial changes in particle size distribution occurred under rapid and slow mixing condition due to the simultaneous formation of microflocs and NOM precipitates. Therefore, combined pretreatment using coagulation not only improved dissolved organics removal efficiency but also flux recovery efficiency.

  • Billions of barrels of briny produced water are generated in the United States every year during oil and gas production. The first step toward recovering or reusing this water is to remove the hazardous organics dissolved in the briny produced water. Biological degradation of hazardous volatile compound could be possible regardless of salinity if they were extracted from briny water. In the current work, the effectiveness of a vapor phase biofilter to degrade the gas-phase contaminants (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes, BTEX) extracted from briny produced water was evaluated. The performance of biofilter system responded well to short periods when the BTEX feed to the biofilter was discontinued. To challenge the system further, the biofilter was subjected to periodic spikes in inlet BTEX concentration as would be expected when it is coupled to a Surfactant-Modified Zeolite (SMZ) bed. Results of these experiments indicate that although the BTEX removal efficiency declined under these conditions, it stabilized at 75% overall removal even when the biofilter was provided with BTEX-contaminated air only 8 hours out of every 24 hours. Benzene removal was found to be the most sensitive to time varying loading conditions. A passive, granular activated carbon bed was effective at attenuating and normalizing the peak BTEX loadings during SMZ regeneration over a range of VOC loads. Field testing of a SMZ bed coupled with an activated carbon buffering/biofilter column verified that this system could be used to remove and ultimately biodegrade the dissolved BTEX constituents in briny produced water.

  • The sediment samples were collected from Seonakdong River and were analyzed for sulfide species such Acid Volatile Sulfide(AVS) and Elemental Sulfur(ES) and Chromium Reducible Sulfide(CRS). Then characteristics of the formation of sulfide species were investigated for six selected samples. Finally the relationship between environmental factors and sulfate reducing rate(SRR) was investigated using two selected samples. Concentrations of AVS and CRS were relatively high, which suggests that organics input to the sediments has been continued until recently and that potential of heavy metals leaching from the sediments is low. SRR in the sediments was closely related to fraction of fine particles(silt+clay) and also to dissolved organic carbon content of the sediment(DOCsed). The dependences of environmental factors such as organic content, temperature, sulfate concentration on the SRR was relatively strong in the selected experiments conducted with the samples from Noksan gate and Daejeo gate samples. The environmental factor dependencies were stronger in the Noksan gate samples than in the Daejeo gate samples, which is probably due to higher surface area of the Noksan gate sediments.

  • This study was conducted to investigate how the pore sizes of MF and UF membranes affected the removal efficiencies. The experimental results were compared with those obtained from the existing sand filter to select the optimum membrane. Turbidity of the raw water was adjusted to 10, 30, 50, 100, and 200NTU. The removal efficiencies of the turbidity and SS were nearly 100% for all membranes applied. Not membrane differences in the removal efficiencies of dissolved organics were also found. Thus, MF membrane with pore size $0.1{\mu}m$ was selected to obtain satisfactory removal efficiencies of turbidity and bacteria. Permeable flux was also considered. The $0.1{\mu}m$ MF membrane system was operated in the treatment plant to compare the results with those obtained from the existing sand filter. Turbidity, SS, $KMnO_4$ consumption, and number of coliform were chosen to be compared. Because there were not much differencies in the quality of the treated water, the existing coagulation-sedimentation-filtration process might be replaced and upgraded by simpler membrane process.

  • The raw drinking water quality is getting worse because of the winter drought and the conventional treatment system is'nt suitable to obtain the satisfied quality of water. So, the advanced water system, BAC(Biological Activated Carbon) process is said to be effective to remove dissolved organics and ammonia nitrogen. In our study, the BAC pilot plant using Nak-dong river water is tested in low temperature. Following results are found from the study. The ammonia nitrogen removal rate of BAC system using wood-based carbon (PICABIOL) was 99% in $6^{\circ}C$ temperature. Chlorine dosage in wood-based BAC effluent was reduced to 67% of that in sand filtered wate. It resulted from the removal of ammonia nitrogen. Also, THM formed by chlorine addition in wood-based BAC effluent was decreased to 65% of that in sand filtered water. In the case of dual-filter, the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen was increased 30% more than in conventional sand filter. According to this result, the ammonia nitrogen load to BAC system could be lessened by the use of dual-filter.

  • The effects of environmental conditions, initial dissolved oxygen concentrations, pH, and the presence of electron carrier vitamin B$_{12}$ , on the reduction rate of TNT by Fe$^{0}$ was Quantitatively analyzed using a batch reactor. In all experiments, TNT reduction was best described with a first order reaction and the reduction rate decreased with the increase in the initial DO concentration. However, the specific reaction rate did not decrease linearly with the increase in the initial DO concentration. In the presence of HEPES buffer 0.2 and 2.0 mM(pH 5.7$\pm$0.2), the specific reaction rate increased more than 5.8 times, which showed reduction rate is rather significantly influenced by the pH of the solution. To test the possibility of reaction rate enhancement, well-known electron carrier(or mediator), vitamin B$_{12}$ has augmented besides Fe$^{0}$ . In the presence of 8.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L of vitamin B$_{12}$ , the specific reaction rate increased as much as 14.6 times. The results indicate that the addition of trace amount of vitamin B$_{12}$ can be a promising rate controlling option for the removal of organics using a Fe$^{0}$ filled permeable reactive barrier.
