The trophic state of the coastal waters of the southern part of Korea was assessed using biogeochemical data obtained from the National Marine Environmental Monitoring Program conducted by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute for six years. The trophic state of different areas, analyzed by non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) analysis, could divide the areas into three groups. Masan Bay, with suboxic water masses and/or the highest concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus occurred, was assessed as being in a hypertrophic state. Ulsan Bay, Onsan Bay, Busan and Jinhae Bay, located near strong point sources, were in a eutrophic state. Other areas, including Tongyong, Yosu, Mokpo and Jeju island, were evaluated as being in a mesotrophic state. During 1997 to 2002, the average values of excess nitrogen, which is the difference between the measured dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and the corrected DIN using the Redfield ratio, were positive at Ulsan, Onsan, and Busan, where there were inflows from polluted rivers. In contrast, those were negative values in Haengam Bay, Gwangyang Bay and nearby Yosu. This suggests that the limiting element for phytoplankton growth differed among sites. The time series data of excess nitrogen showed gradual decrease over time in the hypertrophic waters, but the opposite trend in the mesotrophic waters. This indicated that the ratio of nitrogen to phosphate varied according to the trophic state of the coastal waters. The enrichment of organic matter in sediment in eutrophic waters would disturb the normal pattern of biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen and phosphate. In order to assess the condition of the coastal environment, the benthic boundary layer should be considered.
Temperature, salinity, COD, DIN (Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen), DIP (Dissolved Inorganic Phosphorus), and Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ obtained from the southern coastal waters during the period of 2003 to 2005 were analyzed. Variability in temperature was not found between groups in southern coastal waters, but significantly different depending on sampling sites (p<0.05). The average temperature in 2003 estimated at $18.33^{\circ}C$ that was annually increased by 2005 and significantly different based on statistics (p<0.05). Unlikely to temperature, salinity was significantly different depending on sampling sites, as well as monthly variations (p<0.05). Likewise to temperature, the value of salinity was annually increased. COD estimated at the average of $>1.7\;mg\;l^{-1}$ for three years, indicating optimal water quality. The fluctuations of nutrients were extremely shown in different sampling sites and monthly variations. Chlorophyll a recorded above $2.0{\mu}g\;l^{-1}$ which was associated with high primary phytoplankton, whereas it showed much fluctuations in temporal and spatial, In particular, Tongyong, Jaranman, Jinjuman, and Samcheonpo located in the southeast were the highest fluctuations in water quality than any other regions. The correlation between salinity/COD and nutrients/chlorophyll a was strongly negative or positive, which was possibly associated with much the introduction of run-off water as well as rainfall in summer.
We investigated the factors of mass-mortality in terms of water temperature and prey, in order to prevent the mass-mortality of cultured oysters at Gamak Bay in Yeosu City in 2007. The real-time water temperature was recorded as high, 28 to 31C, during late August. Nutrients, Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN) and Dissolved Inorganic Phosphate (DIP) were downed in September. The analyzed results of chlorophyll a content were 0.78-1.50 ${\mu}gL^{-1}$ and phytoplankton for food resources was 81 cells $mL^{-1}$, both were low. The finding here indicate that Gamak Bay is in an oligotrophic state. The mass-mortality of cultured oysters occurred 43.6% in Gamak Bay. The mortality rate of oyster were above 67.0%, at Wanpo, however, it was showed 18.3% at Gumchun. Therefore, we believe the mass-mortality of cultured oysters at Gamak Bay comes from the destruction of bio-rhythms due to high water temperature and quantitatively and qualitatively decreasing food resources due to the limitation of nutrients.
To understand the effects of fluctuations in dam discharge due to river environments and phytoplankton communities, we monitored such environments and phytoplankton communities biweekly, from February 2001 to February 2002 and from February 2004 to February 2005, in the lower Han River (LHR), South Korea. The phytoplankton abundance during the dry season was approximately two times higher than that during the rainy season. In particular, fluctuations in diatom assemblages, which constituted over 70% of the total phytoplankton abundance, were affected severely by the changes in the discharge. When a large quantity of water in a dam was discharged into the LHR, the conductivity and the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) decreased rapidly, whereas the concentrations of suspended solids (SS), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and dissolved silica (DSi) increased immediately. Time-delayed relationship also revealed that the dam discharge had an immediately significant negative relationship with phytoplankton abundance. On the whole, fluctuations in phytoplankton communities in the LHR were influenced much more by hydrodynamics such as dam discharge than by the availability of nutrients. Thus, the variability in these concentrations usually parallels the strength of river flow that is associated with summer rainfall, with higher values during periods of high river discharge.
To examine temporal and spatial variation in salinity and nutrients in the shallow pore water of intertidal sandflats, we measured salinity and nutrient concentrations (dissolved inorganic nitrogen [DIN], phosphorus [DIP], and silicate [DSi]) in pore water of the intertidal zone along the coastline of Jeju Island at two and/or three month intervals from May 2009 to December 2010. Geochemical parameters (grain size, ignition loss [IL], chemical oxygen demand [COD], and acid volatile sulfur [AVS]) in sediment were also investigated. The surface sediments in intertidal sandflats of Jeju Island were mainly composed of sand, slightly gravelly sand and gravelly sand, with a range of mean grain size from 0.5 to 2.5 ${\O}$. Concentrations of IL and COD in sediment were higher along the eastern coast, as compared to the western coast, due to differences in biogenic sediment composition. Salinity and nutrient concentrations in pore water were markedly different across time and space during rainy seasons, whereas concentrations were temporally and spatially more stable during dry seasons. These results suggest that salinity and nutrient concentrations in pore water depend on the advective flow of fresh groundwater. We also observed an imbalance of the DIN/DIP ratio in pore water due to the influence of contaminated sources of DIN. In particular, nutrient concentrations during rainy and dry seasons were characterized by high DIN/DIP ratios (mean-127) and low DIN/DIP ratios (mean-10), respectively, relative to the Redfield ratio (16) in offshore seawater. Such an imbalance of DIN/DIP ratios in pore water can affect the coastal ecosystem and appears to cause outbreaks of benthic seaweed along the coastline of Jeju Island.

The long-term water-quality change of Asan Bay by the influx of polluted disposal water was predicted through a simulation with an Eco-hydrodynamic model. Eco-hydrodynamic model is composed of a multi-level hydrodynamic model to simulate the water flow and an ecosystem model to simulate water quality. The water quality simulation revealed that the COD(Chemical Oxygen Demand), dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN) and dissolved inorganic phosphorus(DIP) are increased at 5 stations for the subsequent 6 months after the influx of the effluent. COD, DIN and DIP showed gradual decreases in concentration during the period of one to two years after the increase of last 6 months and reached steady state for next three to ten years. Concentration levels of COD, DIN, and DIP showed the increase by the ranges of $11{\sim}67%$, $10{\sim}67%$, and $0.5{\sim}7%$, respectively, which represents that the COD and DIN are the most prevalent pollutants among substances in the effluent through the sewage treatment plant. The current water quality of Asan Bay based on the observed COD, TN and TP concentrations ranks into the class II of the Korean standards for marine water quality but the water quality would deteriorate into class III in case that the disposal water by the sewage plant is discharged into the Bay.
The purpose of the present study is to estimate the regional and seasonal variations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) flux across the sediment-water interface of the inner and central areas of Hiroshima Bay from August 1994 to May 1995. In addition it compares the measured methods and estimates the effect of DIN released from sediment to the primary production of Hiroshima Bay. One method used in this study is to calculate DIN flux from a concentration gradient between sediment porewaters and the overlying water, and the other method is to measure DIN flux from the sediment-core experiment. The fluxes of $NH_{4}^{+}-N\;and\;NO_{2}^{+}\;+\;NO_{3}^{-}-N$ in the inner area were higher than those in central area, all of which showed seasonal variation. $NH_{4}^{+}-N$ flux was maximum in August, while $NO_{2}^{-}\;+\;NO_{3}^{-}-N$ flux was high in January compared with the other seasons. The calculated $NH_{4}^{+}-N\;and\;NO_{2}^{-}+NO_{3}^{-}-N$ fluxes from sediments were $18.2\~60.8\;{\mu}g-at/m^2{\cdot}hr\;and\;0.24\~18.2\;{\mu}g-at/m^2{\cdot}hr$, respectively. The measured $NH_{4}^{+}-N\;and\;NO_{2}^{-}+NO_{3}^{-}-N$ fluxes across the sediment-water interface were $2.00\~111\;{\mu}g-at/m^2{\cdot}hr\;and\;-265\~82.9\;{\mu}g-at/m^2{\cdot}hr$, respectively. The former was lower than the tatter. The calculated $NH_{4}^{+}-N$ flux showed closer relation to environmental factors (dissolved of gen in the overlying water, temperature and redox condition of the sediments) than the measured one did. On the other hand, in the case of $NO_{2}^{-}+NO_{3}^{-}-N$ flux both the calculated and the measured showed little relation to environmental factors, while they turned out to have stronger relation with their concentration in sediments. DIN released from the sediment is expected to support about $25\%\~67\%$ of the primary production in Hiroshima Bay.

Long-term data analyses and bioassay experiments were conducted to assess limiting nutrients in Cheonsu Bay and Taean sea. First, long-term nutrient data (2004-2016) provided by the National Water Quality Monitoring Network were used to assess potential limiting nutrients. Analysis of the long-term data showed that the dissolved inorganic nitrogen/dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIN/DIP) ratio was mostly below 16, with N limitation being dominant. A subsequent analysis using the concentration ratios of N, P, and Si showed that N limitation was dominant during summer and autumn but that Si limitation occasionally occurred during winter and spring in relatively limited areas. However, the dominant limiting nutrient was not determined. The nutrient analysis of the field water collected during the bioassay experiment showed that DIN/DIP revealed P limitation at all stations in March and May, whereas N limitation was dominant in July and October. In the analysis using the concentration ratios of N, P, and Si, P and Si limitation appeared in March and May, but there were points with no dominant limiting nutrient. However, N limitation was dominant in July and October. In the bioassay experiment for assessment of the actual limiting nutrient, the results showed no specific limiting nutrient in March, whereas NH4+ and NO3- showed responses in May, July, and October, which confirmed that N was a substantial limiting nutrient directly involved in phytoplankton growth during this period.

For the better understanding of long-term and seasonal variations of water quality in Masan Bay, South Sea of Korea, we analyzed the archive data monitored at three stations of the bay during the last 13 years (2000-2012). The average concentrations of the chemical oxygen demand (COD), the dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and the dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) during the monitoring period are $2.70{\pm}0.09{\mu}/L$, $19.66{\pm}1.84{\mu}m$ and $1.39{\pm}0.13{\mu}m$ in surface water, respectively, and $2.22{\pm}0.07{\mu}/L$, $18.53{\pm}1.36{\mu}m$ and $1.47{\pm}0.12{\mu}m$ in bottom water, respectively. The trophic state of the surface water was the eutrophic level in Masan Bay during the four seasons. The DIN concentrations of both surface and bottom waters increased from August to November and showed the highest average in November. However, The DIN decreased from February to May and showed the lowest average in May. The concentrations of the DIP and the dissolved silicate (DSi) in bottom waters had the highest averages in August because of the high water temperature and oxygen deficient condition. The results of correlation analysis and factor analysis showed that the main factors of surface waters were inflow of nutrients from terrestrial areas and internal production, and the main factors of bottom waters were the variations of the dissolved oxygen (DO), the DIP, and the DSi. The DIN and DIP average concentrations (2007~2012) had decreased in range of 68.1%~76.0% and 66.2~76.6%, respectively from 2007 in which the "Regulation of Total Emission" was established in Masan Bay. Therefore, it could have had positive effects on water quality improvement to take the "Regulation of Total Emission" and other actions such as reducing water pollutions in Masan Bay from 2007.

When the fresh water from the artificial lakes (Ganwolho and Bunamho) were discharged to Cheonsu Bay in summer to prevent the flood over the reclaimed farmland near the lakes, the impact on water qualities (nutrients, organic matters, trace metals) within the bay was investigated through four surveys (June, July, August and October, 2011). Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) increased about as much as 3-4 times over the whole water column when the freshwater was discharged. And the main species composition of DIN changed from ammonia to nitrate. Dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) decreased as much as 2 times in surface waters, but increased as much as 1.5 times in deep waters, and also silicate concentrations increased as much as 3-4 times in deep waters of the inner bay. The N/P ratios in Chunsu bay seawaters were much higher (2 to 7 times) than the Redfield ratio when the freshwaters were discharged, which indicated the phosphorus limiting in the phytoplankton growth. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) increased as much as about 2 times. In addition, particulate organic matters (POC, PON, POP, Bio-Si) increased as much as above 2 times in the surface waters of the inner bay. Trace metals (Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu) increased in the surface waters of the inner bay, but dissolved Cd concentrations decreased as much as 2 times. Therefore, when the contaminated fresh waters from the artificial lakes were discharged into the bay, nutrients, organic matters and trace metals generally increased compared to normal period. Since the phytoplankton bloom occurred in the surface waters of the inner bay, dissolved oxygens at the surface waters were oversaturated and hence hypoxic in the deep waters. Highly enriched nutrients concentrations were found in deep waters of the inner bay, which was accompanied with the hypoxic condition. Finally, the water quality in the inner bay of the Chunsu bay was deteriorated from less than grade 3 in normal periods to grade 5 when the freshwaters from the artificial lakes were discharged in summer.
