  • The Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety, as a representative organization of Korea, in February 2012 participated in an international Program to Assess the Reliability of Emerging Nondestructive Techniques initiated by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The goal of the Program to Assess the Reliability of Emerging Nondestructive Techniques is to investigate the performance of emerging and prospective novel nondestructive techniques to find flaws in nickel-alloy welds and base materials. In this article, Korean round-robin test results were evaluated with respect to the test blocks and various nondestructive examination techniques. The test blocks were prepared to simulate large-bore dissimilar metal welds, small-bore dissimilar metal welds, and bottom-mounted instrumentation penetration welds in nuclear power plants. Also, lessons learned from the Korean round-robin test were summarized and discussed.

  • To develop and understand dissimilar metals joining of Stainless steel and Copper, ultra-high speed laser lap welding was studied using single mode fiber laser in this study. SUS304 and Cu have large differences in materials properties, and Cu and Fe have no intermetallic compounds by typical binary phase of Cu and Fe system. In this study, ultra-high speed lap welds of SUS304 and Cu dissimilar metals using single-mode fiber laser was generated, and weldability of the weld fusion zone was evaluated using a tensile shear test. To understand the phenomenon of tensile shear load, weld fusion zone of interface weld area and fracture parts after tensile shear test were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis system. And it was confirmed that Cu was easily melting and penetrating in the grain boundaries of SUS304 because of low melting temperature. And high thermal conductivity of copper occurred dissipate heat energy rapidly. These properties cause the solidification cracking in weld zone.

  • The joining of Ti and SUS304 dissimilar metals is one of the effective measures to save rare metal. But Ti and SUS304 have differences in materials properties, and Ti and Fe intermetallic compounds such as TiFe and $TiFe_2$ are easily formed in weld fusion zone between Ti and SUS304. Nevertheless, in this study, full penetration lap dissimilar welding of Ti and SUS304 using single-mode fiber laser with ultra-high welding speed was tried, and it was found out that ultra-high welding speed could control the generation of intermetallic compound. To recognize the formation of intermetallic phase in the weld fusion zone and the compound zone of interface weld area were observed and analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). And it was confirmed that the ultra-high welding speed could reduce amount of intermetallic compounds, but the intermetallic compounds were existed in the weld fusion zone under the all conditions.

  • Additive manufacturing (AM) is a highly innovative method for joining dissimilar materials for industrial applications. In the present work, AM of STS630 and Ti-6Al-4V powder alloys on medium entropy alloys (MEAs) NiCrCo and NiCrCoMn is studied. The STS630 and Ti64 powders are deposited on the MEAs. Joint delamination and cracks are observed after the deposition of Ti64 on the MEAs, whereas the deposition of STS630 on the MEAs is successful, without any cracks and joint delamination. The microstructure around the fusion zone interface is characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Intermetallic compounds are formed at the interfacial regions of MEA-Ti64 samples. In addition, Vicker's hardness value increased dramatically at the joint interface between MEAs and Ti-6Al-4V compared to that between MEAs and STS630. This result is attributed to the brittle nature of the joint, which can lead to a decrease in the joint strength.

  • To simulate the verification process using materials from a decommissioned reactor, a mock-up of the bottom-mounted instrument nozzle in the Kori 1 reactor, where the nozzle was attached to a plate by J-groove dissimilar metal welding, was fabricated. The mock-up distortion was quantified by measuring the plate surface displacement after welding. The residual stresses formed on the support plate surface and the inner surface of the nozzle were then analyzed using the hole-drilling method, contour method, and neutron diffraction. Welding simulations were performed using a 3D finite element method to validate the measured results. The measured and computed stress distributions on the support plate exhibited reasonable agreement. Conversely, the stresses on the inside of the nozzle were found to have an indisputable difference in the contour method and neutron diffraction measurements, which demonstrated strong tensile and compressive hoop stresses, respectively. The possible origins of such differences were investigated and we have provided some suggestions for a precise evaluation in the simulation. This study is expected to be useful in future research on decommissioned reactors.

  • The microstructures and the creep rupture properties of dissimilar welds between the Ni-based superalloy Inconel 740H and the non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel TP316H have been characterized. The welds were produced by shielded metal arc (SMA) welding process with the AWS A5.11 Class ENiCrFe-3 filler metal, commonly known as Inconel 182 superalloy. Postweld heat treatment at $760^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours was conducted to form ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ strengthener in Inconel 740H. The austenitic weld metal produced by Inconel 182 had a dendritic microstructure, and grew epitaxially from the both sides of Inconel 740H and TP316H base metals. Since both Inconel 740H and TP316H did not undergo any solid-state transformation during welding process, there were no heat-affected-zone (HAZ) sub-regions and the coarsoned grains near the weld interface were limited to a narrow region. The hardness of Inconel 182 weld metal was ~220 Hv. The gradual hardness decrease was detected at HAZ of TP316H, and the TP316H base metal displayed the lowest hardness value (~180 Hv) whilst the Inconel 740H showed the highest hardness value (~400 Hv). Fracture after creep occurred at the center of weld metal, regardless of creep condition. It was found that during creep the cracks initiated and propagated along interdendritic regions and grain boundaries at which Laves particles enriched in Nb, Si and Cr were present. The appropriate design of weld metal was discussed to suppress the creep-induced cracking of the present dissimilar weld.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the optimum condition of a friction stir welding process for a joint of AA2219-T87 and AA2195-T8 dissimilar aluminum alloys. These alloys are known to have good cryogenic properties, and as such to be suitable for use in fuel tanks of space vehicles. The welding parameters include the travelling speed, rotation speed and rotation direction of the tool. The experiment was conducted under conditions in which the travelling speed of the tool was 120-300 mm/min and the rotation speed of the tool was 400-800 rpm. To investigate the effect of the rotation direction of the tool, the joining was performed by switching the positions of the two dissimilar alloys. After welding, the microstructure was observed and the micro-hardness were measured; non-destructive evaluation was carried out to perform tensile tests on defect-free specimens. The result was that the microstructure of the weld joint underwent dynamic recrystallization due to sufficient deformation and frictional heat. The travelling speed of the tool had little effect on the properties of the joint, but the properties of the joint varied with the rotation speed of the tool. The conditions for the best joining properties were 600 rpm and 180-240 mm/min when the AA2219-T8 alloy was on the retreating side(RS).

  • Strength and failure of adhesively bonded carbon composite-to-aluminum single-lap joints were studied by experiment. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of various parameters such as curing pressure for bonding, overlap lengths, and adherend thickness on the failure loads and modes of the bonded Joints with dissimilar materials. Experimental results show that the bonding pressure for composite-to-aluminum dissimilar materials should be 4 atm at the lowest. Failure load of the joints increases as the overlap length increases, but the strength (failure load divided by bonded area) decreases rapidly after the overlap width-to-length ratio is greater than 1. When the adherend thickness increase to double, bonding strength increase $12{\sim}55%$. Major failure mode of the joints is the delamination in the composite laminate and the location of delamination goes deeper into the laminates as the bonding pressure and overlap length increase.

  • Friction welding, which uses heat and plastic flow to join metals, is expanding across industries due to its ability to weld heterogeneous alloys and simple process. However, process research is essential for materials with complex geometries, and limited research has been conducted on friction welding between cast and sintered metals. This study analyzed the mechanical properties and microstructural evolution of the joint by controlling the rotational speed and friction pressure, which affect the removal of the heat-affected zone in friction welding of casted SCM440 and sintered F-05-140. Hardness mapping and microstructure observations with material transition were performed to investigate the correlation between phase behavior and welding conditions. These results are anticipated to reduce costs and improve the mechanical properties of key mobility components.

  • The purpose of this work is to find an appropriate welding approach for rotor assembly of a marine turbocharger. The friction welding and laser welding of dissimilar materials, IN713LC and SCM440 were investigated. The quality of the welded joints obtained from two welding processes was evaluated by microstructure observation, micro-hardness and tensile tests. The friction welded joint indicated a good bonding structure in the weld interface. On the other hand, the laser welded joint showed the weld defects and non-welded area in the weld interface.
