The importance of the life cycle cost (LCC) analysis for bridges has been recognized over the last decade. However, it is difficult to predict LCC precisely since the costs occurring throughout the service life of the bridge depend on various parameters such as design, construction, maintenance, and environmental conditions. This paper presents a methodology for the optimal life cycle cost design of a bridge. Total LCC for the service life is calculated as the sum of initial cost, damage cost, maintenance cost, repair and rehabilitation cost, user cost, and disposal cost. The optimization method is applied to design of a bridge structure with minimal cost, in which the objective function is set to LCC and constraints are formulated on the basis of Korean Bridge Design Code. Initial cost is calculated based on standard costs of the Korea Construction Price Index and damage cost on damage probabilities to consider the uncertainty of load and resistance. Repair and rehabilitation cost is determined using load carrying capacity curves and user cost includes traffic operation costs and time delay costs. The optimal life cycle cost design of a bridge is performed and the effects of parameters are investigated.
Disposal methods of managing carcass in Korea livestock production systems include burying, digesting, rendering, carcass dumping to manure pile, dead animal disposer and mini-incinerator. Burying was usually the most practical method of carcass disposal in our livestock farms. Burying, carcass dumping to manure pile, dead animal disposer and mini-incinerator may have environmental regulatory and economic liabilities when used as a means of carcass disposal. In many cases in this survey, these disposal methods offer a poor choice for the producer due to individual site conditions, geology, cost, air emissions, rendering plants. A survey questionnaire that addressed the issues to livestock producers was prepared. The questionnaire addressed two main topics as follows: 1) types of livestock and generation amounts of carcass 2) Number of breeding animals and disposal methods of livestock mortality. A total of 36 livestock producers were interviewed. The results of obtained in this survey were summarized as follows: The number of breeding poultry, swine, beef cow and dairy cow was 251,000, 2,600, 142 and 92 heads per year and the generation amounts of annually carcass was 0.46, 15.32, 0.36, 1.36 tons per year of each poultry, swine, beef cow and dairy cow farms, respectively. The disposal methods of carcass were burying (42%), carcass dumping to manure pile (36%), rendering (8%), incineration (6%), digesting (6%), carcass disposer (2%), respectively. These results can be used as basic information to establish the standard of carcass composting facility.

In this study, life cycle cost (LCC) is analyzed according to insulation panel system type using a deterministic LCC analysis method. Through this analysis, it was found that the construction cost in the deterministic LCC analysis for Ceramic panels was low compared to the construction cost for metal and stone panels. Also, the difference in cost between the Ceramic panel and the metal panel was about 2 times. In the area of maintenance cost, it was found to be similar to the previously analyzed construction cost, in which the metal panel has the highest cost due to the high cost of construction and the frequent need for maintenance. In the case of the stone panel, a small difference in cost is shown compared with that of the Ceramic panel, but the cost is higher than the Ceramic panel. Regarding the cost of waste disposal, the Ceramic panel can reduce the cost by at least 1.5 times and up to 2 times compared to other panel systems. Finally, in the analysis of sensitivity according to changes in discount rates, the Ceramic panel and metal panel systems have a similar cost, and the cost of the metal panel is a bit larger than that of other panel systems. Thus, in the subjects used in the analysis, the Ceramic panel system shows the highest economic benefits.
The world is moving towards a post-carbon society and needs clean and renewable energy for sustainable development. There are many methodological approaches which are helping this shift based on analyzed data about energy resources and which focus on limited types of energy including liquid fossil, solid fossil, gaseous fossil, and biomass (e.g. IPCC Guidelines, ISO 14064-1, WRI Protocol, etc.). We should also consider environmental impact (e.g. greenhouse gas emissions, water use, etc.) and the economic cost of the renewable energy to make a better decision. Recently, researchers have addressed the environmental impact of new technologies which include photovoltaics, wind turbines, hydroelectric power, and biofuel. In this work, we analyze the environmental impact with a carbon emission factor to present a correlation between $CO_2$ emission and the cost of energy resources standardized by the energy output. In addition, we reviewed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as another methodology. Researchers who are studying energy systems have ignored the impacts of entire energy systems, e.g. the extraction and processing of fossil fuels. In power sector, the assessment should include extraction, processing, and transportation of fuels, building of power plants, production of electricity, and waste disposal. Therefore LCA could be more suitable tool for energy cost and environmental impact estimation.
In this investigation, a solar evaporation method was studied to reduce the water content of the radioactive sludge produced from the clay adsorption liquid waste treatment. The solar method to form sludge cake from sludge slurry could economically reduce the sludge volume and the operation cost of minimum 8% could be curtailed.
Decommission of medical cyclotron give rise to a lot of low-level radioactive waste and costs. Decommissioning cost should be reasonably calculated according to the decommissioning activities and installed components of facilities. In this paper, we investigated the experience on the cyclotron relocation from SNUH(Seoul National University Hospital) to SKKU(Sungkyunkwan University) and analyzed radioactive waste management costs by applying the disposal scenarios. Also considerations for decommissioning cost estimation are reviewed. The results could be utilized as a basic data for establishment on the methodology of decommissioning cost estimation and evaluation.
On July 5, 1997, environmental Protection Administration of Taiwan publicized the recycling regulation of waste home appliances that include four items, namely, television, refrigerator, washing machine, and air conditioner. It is believed that this regulation pioneers the law enforcement of waste home appliances in the world. To comply with tile policy, several contemporary waste disposal plants specialized in waste home appliances were established according to a follow-up technical specification oil the waste treatment facilities and methodology. Therefore, the traditional dismantling facilities were substituted and waste collection routes were altered as well accordingly. This study investigates the collection and recycling costs of waste home appliances in accordance with these newly established routes and facilities, respectively. Cost survey was conducted among collectors and recycling plants of waste home appliances; consequently, tire collection and recycling costs were analyzed, correspondingly. Results show that the recycling costs of waste home appliances were much higher than that of other waste items. Since the market share of recycled materials is lacking, these waste recycling plants of home appliances can only survive under the subsidy of EPA in Taiwan. Due to some arduous problems, the subsidiary system has already caused serious financial unbalance for a foundation under EPA of Taiwan, which associated with waste recycling in Taiwan.
Currently, small scale sewage works are getting increase in Chung Nam Province and it is strongly required for those plants to get the information of optimized procedures and technologies. Most processes for sewage works in Korea were designed for large scale plants, so many difficulties are observed in small scale sewage works. This study was conducted to evaluate the propriety of O&M and construction cost for sewage treatment plants in Chung Nam Province. The treatment results and process stability of 32 public sewage treatment plants were also investigated. It is expected to provide optimum O&M and construction cost for future small scale sewage works and improving projects of existing plants by these results. Pollution problems caused by small scale plants are usually restricted to small areas; however, in view of the high cost per unit population, treatment requirements and alternatives have to be studied carefully. In comparison to larger plants, more pronounced and different boundary conditions such as unstable influent load, per capita costs and a large variety of feasible treatment and disposal systems were considered.

In this study, an insulation panel system that has the most excellent economic feasibility in a long term LCC viewpoint in some analysis, which determine a proper insulation panel construction method for the out wall of structures, is analyzed. As a result, in the case of a deterministic LCC analysis, the initial investment cost represents about 80,000Won/㎡ for extrusion ceramic panels. Also, although the costs of maintenance, disassembling, and disposal show no large differences compared with other panel systems, metal panels indicate a bit higher than other panel systems about 1.5 times. In the probability density function that analyzes the variation of the probabilistic cost between panel systems and its economic feasibility, metal panels show the highest cost distribution and extrusion and stone panels represent low cost distributions. In the cumulative function distribution that composites probability density functions, the extrusion ceramic panel represents the most excellent economic feasibility and reliability and that is also the most superior subject among the subjects used in this study.
Impermeable surfaces such as transportation land uses including roads and parking lots accumulate high heavy metals and particulate matters concentration especially during dry season which worsens the river water quality and distort the water circulation system during rainfall events. Recently, the government has been promoting policies to install Low Impact Development (LID) facilities such as permeable pavements or grass blocks in parking lots or pavements. However, transition of asphalt-paved surfaces to permeable pavement generated asphalt wastes which are detrimental to the environment and has cost implications due to its removal and disposal. Therefore this study was conducted to provide a method of constructing a cost-effective permeable pavement to reduce waste generation and cost. In this study, comparative analysis of the water circulation capacity and economic efficiency of the traditional construction method and new method proposed in this study through the lab-scale experiment. The proposed method was to make holes in existing asphalt pavements, layout geotextile fabric and permeable base media such as sand before compaction. After compaction, layout grass blocks on the compacted base media then layout sand in between each grass blocks before compaction. Apparently, there was no significant difference between the traditional installation method of permeable pavement and the proposed method in this study considering surface runoff, infiltrated volume, stored volume, and rainfall-runoff delay time. The proposed method in this study generated 86% less wastes compared to the traditional installation method and has 70% cost reduction considering asphalt removal and disposal. The construction method proposed in this study yielded similar performance compared to the traditional installation method and water circulation effect, but was proven to be less complicated and economical.
