  • Organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) have shown superior characteristics and are expected to dominate the nextgeneration flat-panel displays. Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays, however, have stringent demands on the performance of the backplane. In this paper, the development of thin-film transistors (TFTs) based on indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) on both Gen 1 and 6 glasses, and their decent characteristics, which meet the AMOLED requirements, are shown. Further, several display prototypes (e.g., 2.4" AMOLED, 2.4" transparent AMOLED, and 32" AMLCD) using IGZO TFTs are demonstrated to confirm that they can indeed be strong candidates for the next-generation TFT technology not only of AMOLED but also of AMLCD (active-matrix liquid crystal display).

  • We present results demonstrating that low power consumption phosphorescent AMOLED displays can be fabricated on ultra-thin ($25{\mu}m$) stainless steel substrates, combining an amorphous silicon backplane with a top emission phosphorescent OLED frontplane. We will present preliminary results of flexibility testing on these displays.

  • In this paper, we present a new system, OPTISCOPE SA, especially designed for precise measurement of temporal behavior of LCD displays. We show that gray to gray level response time measurement requires a very sensitive and precise instrument and also that the capacity to measure luminance levels and gamma curve can be useful. Quite often, precise evaluation of LCD response time needs also use of low pass and stop band filters to suppress noise and flicker. Low pass filters affect the results but can be corrected for simple temporal behaviors. For complex temporal behaviors like those observed for overdriven LCDs, we show that direct adjustment of theoretical responses is much more efficient to get a complete picture of the temporal behavior of such displays.

  • We demonstrate color video displays driven by carbon nanotube electron field emitters. These nanotubes are incorporated into the device by selective growth using low temperature chemical vapor deposition. The device structure is simple and inexpensive to fabricate, and a 45 V switching voltage enables the use of low cost driver electronics. The prototype units are sealed 4.6” diagonal displays with 726 um pixels. They represent a piece of a 42” diagonal 1280x720 high definition television. The carbon nanotube growth process is performed as the last processing step and creates nanotubes ready for field emission. No activation post-processing steps are required, so chemical and particulate contamination is not introduced. Control of the nanotube dimension, orientation, and spatial distribution during growth enables uniform, highquality, color video performance.

  • We present a process for printing active matrix displays. In this process, transistors are fabricated using soluble semi-conducting and conducting materials. Accurate definition of the transistor channel and other circuit components is achieved by direct inkjet printing combined with surface energy patterning. We present results on our 4,800 pixel, 50 dpi, active matrix displays.

  • Flexible displays such as plastic-based liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and organic light-emitting diode displays (OLEDDs) have been researched and developed at KETI since 1997. The plastic film substrate is very weak to heat and pressure compared to glass substrate, that its fabrication process is limited to 110$^{\circ}C$ and low pressure. The ITO films were deposited on the bare plastic film substrate by rf-magnetron sputtering. Moreover, in order to maintain uniform cell gap and pressure on the plastic film substrate, we utilized newly-invented jig and fabrication process. Electro-optical characteristics were better than or equivalent to those of typical glass LCDs though it is thinner, lighter-weight, and more robust than glass LCDs.

  • This paper presents the color displays using more than three primary colors, for the reproduction of wider color gamut, and high-fidelity color reproduction. First, Natural Vision system, which is currently under development for the natural color reproduction in visual telecommunication applications, is introduced, The natural vision is based on spectrum instead of trichromatic color space, and enables high-fidelity color reproduction using multispectral and multiprimary technologies. Then, sixprimary color projection displays using LCD and DLP, and a four-primary color flat panel display are shown. It is experimentally demonstrated that the color gamut becomes much larger than conventional RGB-based display. In addition, it is proved that the spectral color reproduction using multiprimary display suppresses the influence of observer metamerism, and as a result, the color matching between the display and the real object is well improved.

  • The concepts of flexible displays and plastic electronics have become some of the most talked about new product opportunities for direct view flat panel displays in recent years. The potential advantages are frequently cited, but the achievement of commercially viable products will require many significant technological innovations in new materials and manufacturing technology. This paper will provide a very broad overview of the rationale for developing flexible displays, the market drivers, the applicable display technologies, the major hurdles that must be overcome and the required evolution of new manufacturing technologies that are essential for successful commercialization. This is intended to provide the outline and context for the series of presentations on specific aspects in each of these topics that will be delivered and discussed at the Plastic Electronics Special Session of the 2005 IMID conference.
