  • Density functional theory (DFT) calculations using the B3LYP hybrid functional and the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set have been performed to predict the wavelength dispersion of optical absorbance and refractive indices for organic compounds and polymers in the range between the vacuum UV (${\sim}157\;nm$) and near-IR (${\sim}850\;nm$). The DFT calculations can reproduce the experimental dispersions of absorbance and refractive indices with high accuracy and low costs. The calculated dispersions demonstrate that the judicious introductions of $-F\;and\;-CF_{3}$ into alicyclic and heterocyclic compounds are effective in reducing the absorption at shorter wavelengths. In addition, the calculated Abbe numbers that represent the refractive index dispersion in the visble region are linearly proportional to the calculated refractive indices at 589 nm.

  • We present an experimental and numerical study of spectral profiles of effective group indices of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) waveguides and of their chromatic-dispersion effect on the four-wave-mixing (FWM) signal generation. The a-Si:H waveguides of 220-nm thickness and three different widths of 400, 450 and 500 nm were fabricated by using the conventional CMOS device processes on a $2-{\mu}m$ thick $SiO_2$ bottom layer deposited on 8-inch Si wafers. Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) were formed with the a-Si:H waveguides, and used for precise measurement of the effective group indices and thus for determination of the spectral profile of the waveguides' chromatic dispersion. The wavelength ranges for the FWM-signal generation were about 45, 75 and 55 nm for the 400-, 450- and 500-nm-wide waveguides, respectively, at the pump wavelength of 1532 nm. A widest wavelength range for the efficient FWM process was observed with the 450-nm-wide waveguide having a zero-dispersion near the pump wavelength.

  • This study describes a simple and effective experimental determination of pump-power dependence of refractive indices and dispersions of erbium-doped fibers (EDFs) of various doping concentrations. Systermatical analysis on light-induced change of the refractive indices and dispersion for a signal wavelength range of 1510 nm-1560 nm with a pump of 980 nm wavelength has been made by measuring the pump-induced phase changes of the signal beam in Mach-Zehnder type interferometer, which has an optically pumped EDF and a reference EDF in each of the two arms, respectively. The measured pump-induced refractive indices match well with the theoritically predicted ones. The results show that pump-induced refractivity and dispersion changes of the EDF increase with the increasing pump power and $Er^{3+}$-doping concentration as expected from theory.

  • A USW based diagnostic procedure is presented for estimating the depth of surface-breaking cracks. The diagnosis is demonstrated on seven lab-scale SFRC beam specimens, which are subjected to the CMOD controlled three-point bending test to create real bending cracks. Then, the recorded multiple ultrasonic signals are examined with the signal processing techniques, including wavelet transform and two-dimensional Fourier transform, to investigate the relationships between the crack depth and two diagnostic indices, namely the attenuation coefficient and dispersion index (DI). Finally, the reliabilities of these indices for depth estimation are verified with the visually measured crack depths as well as the crack features obtained with a digital image processing algorithm. It is found that the DI outperforms the attenuation coefficient in depth estimation, where this index displays good agreement with the visual inspection for 86% of the inspected specimens.

  • Since the Abbe number is a value representing the chromatic dispersion of a transparent optical medium, its measurement is essential for multicolor or white light applications of an optical medium. In this study, the Abbe number in a transparent organic thin film was measured through a simple double-slit experiment, and the results agreed with that calculated from a known dispersion formula for this medium. Unlike conventional methods that calculate the Abbe number from the refractive indices measured at three specific wavelengths using dedicated equipment, the method proposed in this study is a very simple experiment to obtain the Abbe number of new optical media without measuring the refractive indices. We demonstrated that experiments at the undergraduate optics level can be utilized to measure the chromatic dispersion of optical media.

  • An idea for extension of propagation range of surface plasmon-polaritons(SPP), which are guided on metal-strip waveguides, is suggested. Slight modification in refractive indices and/or separation gaps can increase two orders of magnitude in propagation distance of SPPs. Dispersion relations of extended long-range SPP modes excited on vertically coupled SPP waveguides are discussed in detail.

  • A new method to control the free spectral range of a long period fiber grating is proposed and theoretically analyzed. As the refractive index decreases radially outward in the silica cladding due to graded doping of fluorine, waveguide dispersion in the cladding modes was modified to result in the effective indices change and subsequently the phase matching conditions for coupling with the core mode in a long period fiber grating. Enlargement of the free spectral range in a long period fiber grating was theoretically confirmed.

  • Dispersion pattern of the citrus red mite (CRM), Panonychus citri (McGregor) was determined to develop a monitoring method in the satsuma mandarin fields, Citrus unshiu L., in Jeju-do, during 1999 and 2000. CRM population was sampled by collecting leaves. Taylor's power law provided better description of mean-variance relationship for the dispersion indices compared to Iwao's patchiness regression. Slopes and intercepts of Taylor's power law from leaf samples did not differ among surveyed groves. Fixed-precision levels (D) of a sequential sampling plan were developed using Taylor's power law parameters generated from all motile stages of CRM in leaf sample. This sampling plan for leaf sample estimate was tested with resampling validation for sampling plan using 4 independent data sets. Resampling simulation analysis demonstrated that actual fixed-precision level values were better than desired D values of 0.20, 0.25 and 0.30. Required numbers for tree sampling at the density of more than 7 mites per tree were fewer than 18.

  • The correlation between mass of Type Ia Supernova (SN Ia) host galaxies and Hubble residual is now well-established. The origin of this relation, however, is yet to be understood. We have used low-resolution spectra of early-type hosts from YONSEI (YOnsei Nearby Supernovae Evolution Investigation) project to measure central velocity dispersion and Lick/IDS absorption indices. By using the Evolutionary Population Synthesis (EPS) models, luminosity-weighted mean age and metallicity of host galaxies were determined from $H{\beta}$ and absorption lines. Here we will discuss the correlation between the velocity dispersion, which indicates the mass of galaxies, and mean age of stellar population in our sample of early-type host galaxies.

  • Pulmonary function test has been know to be greatly affected by body indices, such as sex, age, height, body weight, body surface area (BSA) and body mass index (BMI), so hat this study was focused to see the relationship between body index and flow-volume curves. Subjects were 156 (male 90, female 66) and they were examined for pulmonary function test in terms of body index and correlation/multiple regression analysis of flow-volume curves at Presbyterian Medical Center from March to August, 2009. The followings results after analyzing the correlation between body index and flow-volume curves. Although flow-volume curve FEF25-75% showed close correlation with age, body weight, and body surface area, but not with body mass index. In addition, multiple regression analysis was performed to see how each body index affects flow-volume curve FEF25-75%, and FEF25-75% dispersion was explained as 74.5% with age only, 94.2% with age and height, and 96% with age, height, and sex. Therefore, sex, age and height that are mainly used for predictive formular of pulmonary function test and nomogram were important factors for pulmonary function test itself, and further study must be done for other body index.
