The Uranium/Molybdenum metallic fuel has been proposed as promising advanced fuel concept especially in the dispersed fuel geometry. The fuel is manufactured in the form of small fuel droplets (particles) placed in a fuel pin covered by a matrix. In addition to fuel particles, the pin contains voids necessary to compensate material swelling and release of fission gases from the fuel particles. When investigating this advanced fuel design, two important questions were raised. Can the dispersed fuel performance be analyzed using homogenization without significant inaccuracy and what size of fuel drops should be used for the fuel design to achieve optimal utilization? To answer, 2D burnup calculations of fuel assemblies with different fuel particle sizes were performed. The analysis was supported by an additional 3D fuel pin calculation with the dispersed fuel particle size variations. The results show a significant difference in the multiplication factor between the homogenized calculation and the detailed calculation with precise fuel particle geometry. The recommended fuel particle size depends on the final burnup to be achieved. As shown in the results, for lower burnup levels, larger fuel drops offer better multiplication factor. However, when higher burnup levels are required, then smaller fuel drops perform better.
20vol% Al2O3-dispersed 2Y-TZP ceramics was prepared by mixing of 2Y-TZP and Al2O3 powder with different particle sizes, and investigated the influence of Al2O3 particle size and sintering condition on the microstructure and fracture toughness. Sintering conditions of the Al2O3-dispersed 2Y-TZP specimens showed high density at sintering condition of 1350℃ and 1500℃ for 1∼5h, and homogeneous microstructure. The grain size of tetragonal zirconia and the fracture toughness increased with the size of dispersed Al2O3 particle. The highest fracture toughness (∼17.2MPa·m1/2) of all specimens was obtained in the specimens with dispersed Al2O3 particle size of 1.0㎛ and sintered at 1500℃ for 2h.

The photosensitive properties and spectroscopic characteristics in the organic photoconductor(OPC) with carrier generation layer(CGL) of poly(vinylbutyral)(PVB) and polycarbonate(PC) doped with titanyl phthalocyanine(TiOPc) were investigated. The change of crystal structure of TiOPc dispersed with PVB and PC was shown by UV-visible reflective spectrum and FT-IR spectrum and mainly caused by the difference of solubility of solvent and the interaction between TiOPc and binder. The particle size of TiOPc dispersed with PVB measured by SEM was smaller than in PC. The crystal structure of TiOPc dispersed with PVB was amorphous type and in PC was $\alpha$type. It was found that the photosensitive properties of OPC were dependent on the change of absorbance and ionization potential of TiOPc occurred from the difference of crystal structure. In this work, the photosensitivity of OPC of TiOPc dispersed with PVB was better than PC due to the crystal type and the smaller particle size.
A correlative analysis has been carried out to predict the average particle size of rubber dispersed phase In high impact polystyrene manufactured by bulk polymerization. To do the correlation, a mechanistic model suggested previously by the author was used for describing the size of stabilizing particles agitated under the turbulent viscous shear subranges in a prepolymerization reactor, where the rubber particles were assumed to be formed at the time of phase inversion in the reactor. Viscosities required for the model were postulated to describe the overall behavior of butadiene rubber and polystyrene mixture along the wide range of conversion. The good agreement between the model and the experimental data from a plant was quite satisfactory for the prediction of the average rubber particle size of high impact polystyrene.
Porous alumina ceramics were fabricated by pseudo-boehmite phydosol-gel process within/without commercial $\alpha$-alumina particles average 1 and 40 micron respectively. The pore characteristics of fired specimens were studied by the measurement of bulk density total porosity thyermal analysis pore volume pore distribution BET area XRD and SEM. with increasing of firing temperature pore volume and BET surface area were decreased and the average pore size was increased to approximately 146$\AA$ upto 80$0^{\circ}C$ by de-watering of [OH] and formation of $\alpha$-alumina. The fired relative density of the alumina-dispersed specimen with average 1 micron particle was increased with the amounts of dispersed particle by bimodal packing theory which is compared to the ones of specimen including of average 40 micron particle. It was confirmed that the percola-tion threshold in porous ceramics with coarser particle (40 micron) has formed between the transformed-alumina from hydrogel and dispersed-alumina of above 50 vol% particle and the total porosity was increased at the threshold point above.

Nano-Sized TiO$_2$ particles with diameter between 2 and 5 nm are synthesized in Water/Triton X-100/n-Hexane microemulsion. Particles show the amorphous structure and partially hydroxide form. The optical absorbance of particles appears at 250nm and band edge at 340nm. Gold metal is deposited on the surface of TiO$_2$ particles by reduction reaction of Au(III) ion with sodium hypophosphite. The size of gold-deposited particles is 20nm, and the optical absorbance appears at 270nm and at 550nm. So particles show the red color. The dense precipitation is formed by aggregation in the TiO$_2$ nano-sized particles of about 5nm size. But the bulky precipitation is formed by agglomeration phenomena in the gold-deposited particles of 20nm size. And also gold-deposited particles is easily dispersed by being re-dispersed in PEG/Water solution. This study has compared those things measuring the SPF characteristics of the cosmetics made of the synthesized particles. If the particle size is controlled appropriately, then the SPF value will be higher, or more colorless cosmetics will be made.
Dispersed type Al2O3-SiC composite powders were synthesized from Al-isopropoxide (Al(i-OC3H7)3) and Si(OC2H5)4 precursors by hydrolysis of mixed alkoxides and carbothermal reaction method. The characteristics of the synthesized (dispersed type) Al2O3-SiC composite powders were investigated using XRD, SEM, TEM, BET and particle size analyzer. Carbothermal reaction to produce Al2O3-SiC composite was completed in 10h at 135$0^{\circ}C$ on 3~4㎤/s (0.21~0.28cm/s) of H2 flow rate and about 1/1 of carbon/oxides(=SiO2+Al2O3) molar ratio. The synthesized powders were observed to have the mean particle size range of 0.4~1.26${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and showed finer particle size with increasing SiC content.

The fundamental mechanism of a dispersed two-phase flow was investigated. Experiments were carried out to understand how the particles behaves under the influence of the particle size, shape, metamorphoses (bubble) and buoyancy of a single particle which is ascending from the standstill water. Two CCD cameras were employed for image processing of the behavior of the particles and the surrounding flow, which was interpreted with the technique of correlation PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) and PTV (Particle Tracking Veloci- metry), respectively The experimental results showed that the large density difference bet- ween a particle and water caused high relative velocity and induced zigzag motion of the particle. Furthermore, the turbulence intensity of a bubble was about twice the case of the spherical solid particle of similar diameter.
To estimate dispersion stability of particles, suspending power and particle size were examined as functions of pHs, surfactants, electrolytes and ionic strengths using ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle as the model of particulate soil. Suspending power and particle size were determined by UV-Vis spectrumeter and by light scattering using the polarization ratio method, respectively. The suspending power was relatively high with polyanion electrolytes and was low with neutral salts. The suspending power was biphasis, minimum pH 6~7, and the effect of surfactant on the suspending power was insignificant. Generally suspending power increased with decreasing the particle size governed aggregation of dispersed particles regardless of solution conditions. Hence the suspending power was inversely related to the particle size.

Characteristics of size, rising velocity and distribution of liquid drops have been investigated in a immiscible liquid-liquid fluidized-bed whose diameter was 0.102 m and 2.5 m in height. Effects of velocities of dispersed (0~0.04 m/s) and continuous (0.02~0.14 m/s) liquid phases and fluidized particle size (1, 2.1, 3 or 6 mm) on the liquid drop properties in the extractor have been determined. The resultant flow behavior of liquid drops became more complicated with increasing the velocity of dispersed or continuous liquid phase. The resultant flow behavior of liquid complicated with increasing the velocity of dispersed or continuous liquid phase. The resultant flow behavior of liquid drops depended strongly upon the drop size and its distribution. The drop size increased with increasing dispersed phase velocity, but decreased with increasing particle size. However, the size of liquid drop exhibited a local maximum with increasing continuous liquid velocity. The size and rising velocity of liquid drops have been well correlated in terms of operating parameters.
