  • Recently, KTX (Korean Train Express) train stoppage accidents were mainly caused by malfunctioning equipment, aging and cracking of railway vehicles, crack breakages of brake disks, and breakages of brake disks. Breakage of brake disk can cause large-scale casualties such as high-speed collision and concern about derailment by hitting lower axle and wheel. Therefore, in this study, a brake disk with solid and ventilation type, which is the brake disk of a KTX train was modeled, and a dynamometer system was constructed to operate the disk. A Rayleigh wave was used to inspect the surface of the brake disk. An ultrasonic inspection module was developed for the brake disk by using a local immersion method due to the difficulty involved in ultrasonic inspection using an existing immersion method. In addition, the surface defects of the brake disk were evaluated using a dynamometer mock-up system and an ultrasonic inspection module of the brake disk.

  • High temperature superconducting(HTS) windings for an HTS transformer which have been developed have two kinds of type, one is the layer type and the other is disk type. The disk type windings have advantages over the layer type ones for a power transformer such as good insulation and limit of voltage stress. But this kind of HTS winding generates excessive AC losses caused by strong magnetic field component perpendicular to the surface of the HTS wire. Nevertheless, the layer type windings have adopted for an HTS power transformer so far because of the small AC losses of the HTS windings. We propose a new winding method for a high voltage HTS transformer which has advantages of both type of HTS windings, and we call it continuous disk type HTS winding. This new type of HTS winding consists of pile of lots of HTS disk windings which have no resistive joint between them. A prototype of an HTS winding was fabricated by the new winding method we proposed and characteristic test was carried out. The test result shows that the new type HTS windings can be applied to HTS power transformers, especially to the high voltage ones.

  • The presence of a bar in disk galaxies indicates that galaxies reached their dynamical maturity, and secular evolution has started to play key roles in the evolution of disk galaxies. Numerical simulations predicted that as a barred galaxy evolves, the bar becomes longer by capturing its immediate neighbor disk stars. We test the hypothesis by exploring bar lengths and measuring the light deficit around the bar at various redshift. Supplementing already classified barred galaxies in later type disk galaxies ($$T{\geq_-}2$$, Sheth et al. 2008), we classify barred galaxies among earlier type disk galaxies (T<2) up to z~0.8 using F814W images from the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS). We estimate the length of bars analytically for ~400 galaxies, and find that there is a slight decrease in bar length with redshift. We also find that longer bars show more prominent light deficit around the bar and this trend is stronger for nearby galaxies. Our results are consistent with the predictions from numerical simulations, and imply that the bar induced secular evolution is already in place since z~0.8.

  • A rotating disk is introduced to be applied to the deep drawing press. Several characteristics are summarized to see the basics of deep drawing of sheet metal in terms of load-stroke relationship and formability. Many conventional drawing presses, which are mostly link-type presses, are also shown to be compared with the rotating disk-type press. Performances of the new press are kinematically analyzed it terms of load-main gear angle relationship, stroke-gear angle relationship, and slide velocity-gear angle relationship and they are compared with those of conventional types', e. g. crank press and so on. The comparison show kinematically better performance of rotating disk-type press than that of conventional ones. Also, the new press are proven to be one of the best press for mass production in terms of cycle time. Applicability of the rotating disk press to deep drawing and cold forging work is introduced. The new press is described in terms of economy such that the cost of new press would be much lower than those of conventional types'.

  • We present the analysis of chemical abundances and kinematics for six hypervelocity star (HVS) candidates. These objects are G/K-type low-mass stars in the Galactic disk, while other HVSs previously found are B-type high-mass objects in the Galactic halo. The stellar orbits and kinematics of our HVS candidates suggest that they do not originate in the Galactic center or in an accretion event, indicative of yet-unknown mechanisms that produce kinematically-extreme disk stars. In order to study in detail their origin, we obtained medium-resolution (R~6000) spectra of these stars and derived abundances of several chemical elements (Mg, Ca, Si, Ti, Cr, Fe, and Ni). From the comparison of the chemical abundances with the Galactic stellar components (disk, bulge, halo, and dwarf galaxies) and the kinematic properties of our HVSs, we conclude that two of them are likely ejected from the Galactic disk, one originated from the Galactic center as for the young B-type HVSs, and the other one might be ejected from either the Galactic disk or other regions.

  • With the increase of track density, high rotational speed and the compatibility for various media such as CD-ROM, CD-R/RW, DVD-ROM/RAM/RW etc. in optical disk drive, the effective anti-vibration design is so crucial for robust operaton. Especailly when the drive is self-excited by unbalanced disk, internal sled base vibration and its external transmission to the case bring about so severe problem. Generally these two consideration points the practical anti-vibration design process to control thses two conflictive properties using finite element analysis. As an example of the design process, Duro 25 and 40 visco-elastic rubber mount was selected and analyzed. The stiffness obtained from FEM rubber model was well matched with the experiments. Also it was confirmed that the internal and external vibration induced from unbalanced disk have good agreement with experimental results. The proposed design process is adopted to the slim-type optical disk drive.

  • In this paper, the pumping performance of the three-stage disk-type drag pump which works in the outlet pressure range from 4 to 0.01 Torr is studied experimentally. The rotational speed of the pump is 24,000rpm, and nitrogen is used as a test gas, The pumping characteristics of various drag pumps are investigated. The inlet pressures are measured for various outlet pressures of the test pump. The maximum compression ratios for zero throughput are measured for three-stage, two-stage BSC type, helical-type, one-stage BSC type and one-stage OSC type, respectively.

  • The disk/blade assembly of a turbine engine is made in the shape of a dovetail type or a fir-tree type. Since disk fillet regions or contact surfaces undergo high stress comcentration, fatigue cracks frequentrly occur in the disk/blade assembly. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the stress distributions in the fir-tree type disk/balde assembly and predict the region of fatigue failure. The stress distributions of the disk/blade assembly were investigated by using the photoelastic method and the finite element method. Two dimensional photoelastic techniques were used to investigate the stress distributions of contact surfaces and fillet regions. TH stress distributions were obtained by the shear-difference method and were compared to the finite element results. It was found that maximum tensile stresses were higher in the fillet region thatn in the contact surfaces of the fir-tree models. The finite element results showed good agreement with the experimental results.

  • The Black Eye Galaxy M64 is an intriguing spiral galaxy with a Type III disk break. To trace the origin of its Type III component, we present HST/ACS F606W/F814W photometry of resolved stars in the outer disk of M64 (2.5' < R < 6.5'). First, we discover a bright extended globular cluster (GC) M64-GC1 at R ~ 5.5', and find that it is an old metal-poor halo GC ([Fe/H] = -1.5 +/- 0.2). Second, we find that there are two distinct subpopulations of red giant branch stars (RGBs). One is an old metal-rich ([Fe/H] ~ -0.4) disk population, and the other is an old metal-poor halo population similar to the resolved stars in M64-GC1. The radial number density profile of the metal-rich RGB follows an exponential disk law, while that of the metal-poor RGB follows a de Vaucouleurs's low. From these results, we conclude that the origin of the Type III component in M64 is a halo, not a disk or a bulge. We will further discuss the results in regards to the formation and evolution of M64.

  • In the last couple of years, the flexible optical disk(FOD) system that consists of a thin polycarbonate(PC) film of 95 ${\mu}m$ thick, a rigid stabilizer, and a high speed spindle motor has been spot-lighted as the next-generation optical system for archival use of digital data. The air film between the rotating disk and stabilizer provides a means for damping out the lateral disk vibrations. However, its damping-capability drops significantly as the rotational speed of the disk exceeds a specific limit and, eventually, the disk vibration propagates inward causing the whole span of the disk exhibits large vibration amplitudes. Based on the numerical simulations as well as the experimental results, the present work aims to evaluate the damping coefficient of the air-film near the outer region of the disk where the capillary type orifices are applied to the edge of the curved stabilizer.
