  • In a cloud environment, performance degradation, or even downtime, of virtual machines (VMs) usually appears gradually along with anomalous states of VMs. To better characterize the state of a VM, all possible performance metrics are collected. For such high-dimensional datasets, this article proposes a feature extraction algorithm based on unsupervised fuzzy linear discriminant analysis with kernel (UFKLDA). By introducing the kernel method, UFKLDA can not only effectively deal with non-Gaussian datasets but also implement nonlinear feature extraction. Two sets of experiments were undertaken. In discriminability experiments, this article introduces quantitative criteria to measure discriminability among all classes of samples. The results show that UFKLDA improves discriminability compared with other popular feature extraction algorithms. In detection accuracy experiments, this article computes accuracy measures of an anomaly detection algorithm (i.e., C-SVM) on the original performance metrics and extracted features. The results show that anomaly detection with features extracted by UFKLDA improves the accuracy of detection in terms of sensitivity and specificity.

  • RDA(Relational Discriminant Analysis) is a way of finding classifiers based on the dissimilarity measures among the prototypes extracted from feature vectors instead of the feature vectors themselves. Therefore, the accuracy of the RDA classifier is dependent on the methods of selecting prototypes and measuring proximities. In this paper we propose to utilize PRS(Prototype Reduction Schemes) and Mahalanobis distances to devise a method of increasing classification accuracies. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed mechanism increases the classification accuracy compared with the conventional approaches for samples involving real-life data sets as well as artificial data sets.

  • Linear discriminant analysis is a statistical analysis method that is generally used for dimensionality reduction of the feature vectors or for class classification. However, in the case of a data set that cannot be linearly separated, it is possible to make a linear separation by mapping a feature vector into a higher dimensional space using a nonlinear function. This method is called generalized discriminant analysis or kernel discriminant analysis. In this paper, we carried out target classification experiments with active sonar target signals available on the Internet using both liner discriminant and generalized discriminant analysis methods. Experimental results are analyzed and compared with discussions. For 104 test data, LDA method has shown correct recognition rate of 73.08%, however, GDA method achieved 95.19% that is also better than the conventional MLP or kernel-based SVM.

  • The design of a pattern recognition system generally involves the three aspects: preprocessing, feature extraction, and decision making. Among them, a feature extraction method determines an appropriate subspace of dimensionality in the original feature space of dimensionality so that it can reduce the complexity of the system and help to improve successful recognition rates. Linear transforms, such as principal component analysis, factor analysis, and linear discriminant analysis have been widely used in pattern recognition for feature extraction. This paper shows that singular value decomposition (SVD) can be applied usefully in feature extraction stage of pattern recognition. As an application, a remote sensing problem is applied to verify the usefulness of SVD. The experimental result indicates that the feature extraction using SVD can improve the recognition rate about 25% compared with that of PCA.

  • Large signal type data sets are difficult to classify, especially if the data sets are non-stationary. In this paper, large signal type and non-stationary data sets are wavelet transformed so that distinct features of the data are extracted in wavelet domain rather than time domain. For the classification of the data, a few wavelet coefficients representing class properties are employed for statistical classification methods : Linear Discriminant Analysis, Quadratic Discriminant Analysis, Neural Network etc. The application of our wavelet-based feature selection method to a mass spectrometry data set for ovarian cancer diagnosis resulted in 100% classification accuracy.

  • Action recognition has been studied in computer vision field for years. We present an effective approach to recognize actions using a dimension reduction method, which is applied as a crucial step to reduce the dimensionality of feature descriptors after extracting features. We propose to use sparse matrix and randomized kd-tree to modify it and then propose modified Local Fisher Discriminant Analysis (mLFDA) method which greatly reduces the required memory and accelerate the standard Local Fisher Discriminant Analysis. For feature encoding, we propose a useful encoding method called mix encoding which combines Fisher vector encoding and locality-constrained linear coding to get the final video representations. In order to add more meaningful features to the process of action recognition, the convolutional neural network is utilized and combined with mix encoding to produce the deep network feature. Experimental results show that our algorithm is a competitive method on KTH dataset, HMDB51 dataset and UCF101 dataset when combining all these methods.

  • Sasang Constitution data that were classified by the QSCCII (Questionnaire for the Sasang Constitution Classification II) and artery pulse waves of Chon, Guan, and Chuck data measured using an electronic manometer, were obtained from 732 subjects who visited an oriental hospital. The pulse width, peak height, and number of peaks were extracted from the pulse waves as feature variables. Validity and reliability analyses were performed to obtain the feature variables. The feature variables with high validity and reliability were selected as the discriminant variables. The pulse wave data were divided into training and predicting samples by applying a fivefold cross-validation technique. Discriminant analysis was performed for the training sample, and discriminant functions were obtained. The discriminant functions were applied to the predicting sample and the Sasang Constitution was predicted. The accuracy of prediction was estimated by comparing the predicted Sasang Constitution and that obtained by QSCCII. The accuracy of the predicted Sasang Constitution before (after) age and sex calibration was 73.6 % (70.4 %), 68.4 % (84.2 %), and 74.2 % (67.7 %) for Taeumin, Soumin, and Soyangin, respectively, and 72.5 % (73.8 %) in total.

  • This paper proposes the method of facial expression recognition based on decision tree structure. In the image of facial expression, ASM(Active Shape Model) and LBP(Local Binary Pattern) make the local features of a facial expressions extracted. The discriminant features gotten from local features make the two facial expressions of all combination classified. Through the sum of true related to classification, the combination of facial expression and local region are decided. The integration of branch classifications generates decision tree. The facial expression recognition based on decision tree shows better recognition performance than the method which doesn't use that.

  • In this paper, the multi feature extraction algorithm for estimation of wrist movements based on Electromyogram(EMG) is proposed. For the extraction of precise features from the EMG signals, the difference absolute mean value(DAMV), the mean absolute value(MAV), the root mean square(RMS) and the difference absolute standard deviation value(DASDV) to consider amplitude characteristic of EMG signals are used. We figure out a more accurate feature-set by combination of two features out of these, because of multi feature extraction algorithm is more precise than single feature method. Also, for the motion classification based on EMG, the linear discriminant analysis(LDA), the quadratic discriminant analysis(QDA) and k-nearest neighbor(k-NN) are used. We implemented a test targeting twenty adult male to identify the accuracy of EMG pattern classification of wrist movements such as up, down, right, left and rest. As a result of our study, the LDA, QDA and k-NN classification method using feature-set with MAV and DASDV showed respectively 87.59%, 89.06%, 91.75% accuracy.

  • We propose a hybrid pattern recognition method that effectively combines two different features for improving data classification. We first extract the PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and LDA (Linear Discriminant Analysis) features, both of which are widely used in pattern recognition, to construct a set of basic features, and then evaluate the separability of each basic feature. According to the results of evaluation, we select only the basic features that contain a large amount of discriminative information for construction of the combined features. The experimental results for the various data sets in the UCI machine learning repository show that using the proposed combined features give better recognition rates than when solely using the PCA or LDA features.
