By taking a bottom-up "library in the life of the user" perspective rather than a top-down "user in the life of the library" perspective, this paper uses anecdotal evidence from the past and near present to examine the multiple roles the U.S. public library plays and has played as public space in the everyday lives of its patrons. By harnessing "public sphere" theory discussed in Jurgen Habermas's THE STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE PUBLIC SPHERE (1989) and by the examining the rich literatures on civic life and institutions that have evolved from it, the author argues that Library and Information Studies discourse has to expand its scope to include research and analysis of "library as place" from a user's perspective if it hopes to develop a deeper understanding of what the public library does for means to members of the communities in which they reside.

The purpose of this work is to analyze categorial character of Russian verbal aspect from the typological perspective. To do this, first of all we will examine the overall historical process of grammaticalization of Russian verbal aspect. As a result of analysis, we have suggested that against wide-spread general assumptions in this area Russian verbal aspect correspond rather to lexico-grammatical category, than to purely typical grammatical category. Actually, I think this kind of approach as a pivotal point for the study of Russian verbal aspect. For example, this kind of typological approach has great advantages in a sense that firstly it gives us possibility of breaking from notorious routine Slavic-Centrism, secondly it can explain sufficiently and adequately various lexico-semantic usages of Russian verbs. Thirdly, our approach consistently accounts for various interactions of lexico-semantic, grammatical, discourse-pragmatic levels, in which Russian verbal aspect is involved. And finally, it sheds light on functional interactions between verbal categories, such as aspect, tense, and mood.

대학 미분방정식 수업 개발의 일환으로서 본 연구는 학생들의 미분방정식에 관한 개념적 모델을 탐구하는 것에 초점을 두고 진행되었다. 본 연구가 이루어진 미분방정식 수업은 해석적, 질적, 그래프적, 수치적 방법 등의 다양한 수학적 방법의 적용에 기초하여 학생들이 능동적인 수학적 토의를 통해 미분방정식 주요 개념의 재발명해 가는 것을 강조하였다. 이러한 수업 맥락에서 본 연구는 학생들의 수학적 토의 과정에 나타나는 개념적 은유의 사용패턴을 탐구하였다. 본 논문에서는 발화 분석을 통해 추출된 미분방정식에 관한 학생들의 개념적 모델을 구성하는 주요한 개념적 은유인 '기계은유'와 '가상적 운동 은유'와 이들 각 개념적 은유의 수학적 특성을 제시한다. 끝으로, 본 연구의 수학적 발화 분석 결과에 기초하여 학생들의 개념적 모델의 이중성의 의미를 사회문화적 시각에서 해석하고 학교 수학에 주는 시사점에 대해 논의한다.

본 연구에서는 담론적 관점에서 우리날 중학교 1학년 교과서 3종과 미국 CMP 교과서 담론에서 생성된 히스토그램의 의미를 분석하는 한편, 히스토그램 과제의 통계적 문제해결 단계별 발문의 특징을 조사하여 향후 히스토그램에 관한 교과서 담론 개선에 구체적인 아이디어를 제공하고자 한다. 분석 결과 첫째, 국내 교과서와 미국 CMP 교과서에서 히스토그램을 정의하는 방식의 차이가 있었고, 둘째, 교과서에서 히스토그램의 의미를 구성하는 담론적 구조는 다양했다. 셋째, 히스토그램 과제에 반영된 통계적 문제해결 단계가 제한적이었고, 넷째, 국내 교과서와 미국 CMP 교과서의 히스토그램 과제 발문에서 학생들에게 요구하는 활동에 차이가 나타났다. 이를 바탕으로 히스토그램을 정의하는 과정과 과제의 발문 개선에 대한 아이디어를 제안하고자 한다.

This paper is one of those attempts to explore some possibility of agreement between feminist discourse and postcolonial discourses through the approach of postcolonial feminism in the reading of the controversial novel, So Far from the Bamboo Grove and Year of Impossible Goodbyes. So Far from the Bamboo Grove, when read from the perspective of postcolonial feminism, reveals 'domestic nationalism' of imperial narratives in which the violence of imperial history in Korea is hidden behind the picture of every day lives of an ordinary Japanese family and Japanese women. Furthermore, postcolonial feminist's perspective interprets Yoko family's nostalgia for their 'home,' Nanam in Korea, as 'imperialist nostalgia' working as a mask to hide the violent history of colonization of Empire. In this way, postcolonial feminist reading of the story detects the ways the narrative of Empire appropriates women, family image and even nostalgia for childhood. At the same time, this perspective explains the readers' empathy for Yoko family's suffering and the concerning women issues caused by wartime rape and sexual violence by defining Yoko as a woman of Japanese Empire, whose life of interstice between imperial men and colonial men cannot be free from violence of rape during anti colonial wars. Year of Impossible Goodbyes as a counter discourse does not overcome the traditional binary opposition of nationalism which quietens gender and class issues. As an attempt to fill in the interstice between the two perspectives of feminism and postcolonialism. postcolonial feminist reading turns out to be a valid tool for the reading of the two novels chosen here.

This paper attempts to provide an account for the problems of intensional opacity of referring expressions and the presupposition inheritance in the belief contexts from the discourse perspective. I discuss Jaszczolt's discourse model based on DRT to account for the belief reports. Jaszczolt analyzes referring expressions in terms of the three readings(de re, de $dicto_1$ and de $dicto_2$) and attempts to represent the differences between them in the DRS's via different anchoring modes; external anchoring, formal anchoring and nonanchoring. I propose an extended model to account for the presupposition inheritance in the belief contexts and attempt to analyze the data in Korean based on this model. The differences in the PI and in the representations of DRS's which are induced by the different complement types, ${\ldots}ko(mitta)\;and\;{\ldots}kesul(mitta)$, are discussed.

One way for phatic communication to be linguistically realized involves ritual activities, such as greetings and leave-takings. These conventionalized acts in medical contexts can significantly influence both transactional and interpersonal goals. The analysis in this paper confirms that exchanging rituals such as greeting and leave-taking between doctors and patients is not a simple exchange of conventionalized linguistic symbols. In addition, the use of discursive strategies means that to determine whether an expression is phatic or not, it is necessary to analyze it from the multidimensional perspective. The phaticity is established based on the negotiation between the participants during the interaction. We have found that the interrogative form of greeting like "¿Qué tal?" (How are you?) becomes a versatile resource in the medical context. Thus, professionals need to be attentive to the discourse progress, because the phaticity of the interrogative greetings (illocutionary force) is linked, in the vast majority, with the reaction of the patients. Also, the data confirms that when participants coordinate closings, the exchange of turns lengthens and the intervention of various discursive strategies for phatic communion becomes more prominent.

이 연구는 한국인 프랑스어 학습자들이 프랑스어 담화 내의 대명사를 해석할 때 담화 구조의 영향을 받는지 알아보았다. 한국인 프랑스어 학습자, 프랑스어 원어민 참가자들은 세 문장으로 구성된 46개의 짧은 이야기를 읽고 이야기의 연결이 얼마나 자연스러운지 7점 척도로 평가했다. 이야기들은 마지막 문장의 주어가 이전 문장의 주어와 동일한지 여부와 마지막 문장의 주어가 반복된 명사구 또는 대명사로 지시되었는지에 따라 4가지 경우로 나누어졌다. 프랑스어 원어민 참가자들은 선행연구에서와 같이 마지막 주어가 이전 문장의 주어와 동일할 때, 주어가 변환될 경우에는 대명사보다 반복 명사구로 언급될 때 이야기가 더 자연스럽다고 판단하였다. 반면 한국인 참가자들은 주어 연속 여부에 무관하게 대명사 주어 문장을 반복 명사구 주어 문장보다 부자연스럽다고 판단하였다. 이와 같은 한국인 프랑스어 학습자의 대명사 해석 방식은 영 프랑스어권 아동의 모어 학습과정에서 대명사 해석의 기제 습득과정과 비교하여 논의되었다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the art world's perspective on popular art and the contact point with pure art and to present the requirements of fashion as a popular art. To analyze the artistic value of fashion, this study analyzed and presented the requirements of art by linking the innate characteristics of fashion premised on mass consumption of popular art. The research method consisted of content analysis focusing on books and papers on art and fashion. A critical perspective on expansion of the artistic field amid the blurred boundaries of art is the basis of a critical comparison between popular art and avant-garde art and a critique of popular art as opposed to value-oriented art. Conversely, as a point of contact with popular art with fine art, art is discussed against the ideological strategy of fine art and the shift in hegemony brought about by erosion of the barrier between art and everyday life. In addition, the non-essentialist perspective contradicts the division theory of popular art. The requirements of fashion as a popular art were analyzed based on the value of self-expression through the aesthetic pursuit of creativity and aesthetic expression, discourse as art, and expansion of modern art from the inessentialist perspective of popular art.

Honorific forms express the speaker's social attitude to others and also indicate the social ranks and level of intimacy of the participants in the discourse. In a cross-linguistic perspective of grammar engineering, modelling honorification has been regarded as a key strategy for improving language processing applications. Using the HPSG and MRS formalism, this article provides a multilingual grammar model of honorification. The present study incorporates the honorific information into the Meaning Representation System (MRS) via Individual Constraints (ICONS), and then conducts an evaluation to see if the model contributes to semantics-based language processing.
