  • Recently, additional pedestrian passages are installed on urban tunnels in Korea. The lighting environment of the pedestrian passages should be appropriate to pedestrians. In this study, illuminance and discomfort glare where measured for determining the actual impact that pedestrians will be influenced by the tunnel lighting condition. Illuminance and discomfort glare were measured in 'S tunnel' which is located in Dong-Jack, Seoul, at day and night. And field survey on illuminance and discomfort glare was conducted to identify subjective responses of pedestrians. From the results of measurements and the survey, it is known that the lighting environment of the pedestrian passage in the tunnel is slightly dark especially at day time. UGR values which were measured at night were also higher than that at day. The results and methods of this study will be useful data for the 'Environmental Improvement of Pedestrian passage in Tunnel' project which was begun by Seoul City at 1st December 2008.

  • It is a system that controls temperature, humidity and fine-dust to make interior environment more comfortable for modern people who spend 90% of the time in indoor. In an experiment of finding which one of temperature and humidity influence more to discomfort index, for a fixed temperature of 21, discomfort index increased by 0.1 with a 1 change of humidity, and for a fixed humidity of 40, discomfort index increased by 1.2 with a 1 change of temperature. As a result, it was found that the temperature is more influential than the humidity to discomfort index. In an experiment of measuring communicational limitation of Bluetooth, the communication was possible for at most 30 meters without obstacles. With high obstacles like walls or steel bars, it was able to penetrate at most 2 obstacles and maximum distance which it can communicate was 10 meters for just one high molecule obstacle.

  • Musculoskeletal disorders are a major cause of occupational disabilities. Approximately thirty percent state that the major reason for an inability to work is a musculoskeletal problem. A farm work is associated with increased stress and trauma to joints. Chronic overuse injuries are a result of stresses that exceed the body's adaptive or healing capabilities. They can occur in bone, tendons and muscle-tendon-bone junctions. The aim of the investigation was to the study the frequency of pain, ache, and discomfort in the musculoskeletal system among farmers, to find possible correlations between these symptoms and various working positions and different working actions. A questionnaire was answered by 138 farmers. Of those who answered the questionnaire 82% had pain and discomfort from back, shoulders, arms in orders, The result showed that musculoskeletal pain predominate in the farming seasons, and of those who had pain and discomfort 89% thought that farm works had a correlation with the pain and discomfort of musculoskeletal system. But only 17% of quationnaire were put to periodic medical examinations, and 50% of those who had pain and discomfort consulted a doctor. Education in effective pain treatment should therefore be intensifide to ascertain that farmers in rural areas have satisfactory knowledge of the musculoskeletal pain as a chronic overuse syndrome.

  • Even though a dual lens stereoscopic camera allows for convenient stereoscopic photography, the necessity for the research comes up, since the dual lens stereoscopic camera can cause visual discomfort during zoom-in due to the fixed convergence point. We propose a method based on which a convergence point can be adjusted to prevent visual discomfort during zoom-in for a dual lens stereoscopic camera. First, the relational model is classified into nine kinds and defined, depending on locations of focus, object, and convergence point. And then, the method to minimize visual discomfort is suggested by adjusting convergence point on the given model. We also implement the suggested methods with anaglyph computer graphic and demonstrate the superiority of them.

  • The purpose of this study is to research on status of physical discomfort and clothing life including clothing inconvenience for enhancing self-reliance of elderly women, newly emerging consumer. The subject of research were 346 elderly women who aged 60 or older in Seoul and Seoul Suburbs. Survey consisted of questions about body discomfort, satisfaction and purchasing criteria of ready-to-wear, the inconvenience of clothing. The results of this study are as follows: Physical discomforts were generally associated with the ability to regulate body temperature. The biggest complaint of ready-to-wear was the price, and the next were the size and activity. In purchasing criteria, 'clothes to fit my body shape', 'clothes easy to put on and take off', 'comfortable clothes to work' showed high score. In clothing inconvenience, 'feel inconvenience due to several layers of clothing to avoid chilliness', 'feel heaviness in the waist due to tightness', 'feel chilliness even when wearing several layers of clothing in the winter' were the most uncomfortable parts. Subjects over the age of 80 years and needed the help of others in activities experienced more inconvenience in clothing life. It seems that body discomfort such as dulness of movement and loss of body temperature regulation capability due to aging had a influence on their clothing life. This problem could be improved by the adjustment of pattern allowance, the selection of the fastener, and the proper use of functional fabric. The results of this study will be used as a basis for development of the elderly women's clothing to increase convenience and mobility in everyday life.

  • This study examined the effects of self-differentiation and psychological discomfort on antenatal attachment of pregnant couples in their third trimester of pregnancy. The subjects were 182 couples in J province who had participated in the first wave of the Korea Attachment Longitudinal Study (KALS). Data were analyzed by means of frequency, percentages, Pearson's correlations, and stepwise multiple regression models using SPSS 20.0. The findings were as follows. First, the independent t-test showed that the mean scores of pregnant women's self-differentiation were lower than their spouses in all subscales except emotional cutoff, and higher than in all psychological discomfort subscales. There was no significant difference in antenatal attachment quality between women and men, but the pregnant women significantly spent more time thinking about the fetus than their spouses. Second, the stepwise multiple regression models revealed that pregnant women's emotional cutoff in self-differentiation influenced the most on both quality and quantity of antenatal attachment. Among subscales of their spouses' self-differentiation, only emotional reactivity had an impact on quality of antenatal attachment, and fusion with others had the most impact on quantity of antenatal attachment. Among the pregnant women's and their spouses' psychological discomfort subscales, only depression influenced each quality and quantity of antenatal attachment. This is the very first and only study in which the impact of the pregnant couples' self-differentiation on antenatal attachment has been examined.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the optimum slat angle of the venetian blind which was applied at an outer skin of a curtain-wall system. The evaluation of the blind slat angle was performed in terms of the comfortable visual environment and decreased energy consumption. The office building prototype was considered for the analysis and simulation variables include application of blind, blind slat angle and dimming control of lighting. The annual energy consumption and incidence rate of discomfort glare were analyzed using EnergyPlus which is developed by the U. S. Department of Energy for the detailed building energy simulation. As a result, it turns out that when the blind (reflectance: 0.5) was installed, the annual energy consumption was greater than that of the base model. However, when the dimming control was applied, the maximum energy saving of 16.3% could be achieved at a slat angle of $0^{\circ}$. In addition, in case of the base model, the incidence rate of discomfort glare was 84%, while the case of the blind with the slat angle of $0^{\circ}$ showed that the incidence rate of discomfort glare was 42.4%. Consequently, the results showed that the slat angle of $55^{\circ}$ with dimming control was the optimum strategy for the comfortable visual environment and decreased energy consumption.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the differences in exudate and bleeding incidence and the changes in back pain and discomfort based on the weight of a sand bag applied to the femoral puncture site after hepatic transcatheter arterial chemoembolization. Methods: This quasi-experimental study comprised 82 patients randomly divided into three different groups. Experimental group 1 patients had a 600g sandbag, experimental group 2 patients an 800g sandbag, and control group patients a 1900g sandbag, on femoral access sites post procedure. The three groups of patients were assessed on level of exudate and bleeding and asked about back pain and discomfort at 30, 60, 120, 180 and 240 minutes after the procedure. Results: There were no significant differences in exudate and bleeding between the three groups before and after application of the sandbag post procedure. Both back pain and discomfort were significantly lower in the experimental groups than in the control group. Conclusion: There was no significant effect on bleeding and exudation due to the weight of the sandbag. The lowest level of back pain and discomfort was found in the group with the lightest weight (600 g). Therefore, the use of lighter-weight sandbags to prevent post procedure vascular complications is proposed.
