The Impact of Total Radiation Flux on Organic Materials under LED Lighting

  • In this study, an accelerated aging experiment for fabric and paper was conducted using two light emitting diode(LED) sources with different wavelength characteristics, and the discoloration under each lighting type was examined. Hanji(Korean traditional paper) and related textiles showed more discoloration under blue LEDs, while the blue wool standard showed more discoloration under white LEDs. This, indicated that the deterioration varied depending on the sample color. The the effect of the light source on artifact deterioration was primarily related to the total radiation flux(expressed in mill watts), rather than the total luminous flux(expressed in lumens). In addition, the discoloration of the investigated artifacts was dependent on the color rendering of the lighting.

Discoloration Pattern of Lettuce Leaf Disks as Influenced by Sulfur Dioxide (아황산에 의한 상치 잎구조의 변색패턴)

  • Development of a model system for mode of action studies of $SO_2$ was attempted with a plant tissue. Leaf disks, 1.0cm diameter, cut from the lamina of lettuce leaves, were floated on the testing medium and placed in light or dark condition to investigate the discoloration pattern with various sources of $SO_2$. Discoloration of leaf disks tended to be more serious with higher concentrations of $SO_2$ and on exposure to the light. Leaf disks were more severely discolored at lower pH with constant SO2 concentration. These discoloration patterns were highly reproducible and similar in all sources of $SO_2$. Spectrophotometric evidence suggested that light-mediated discoloration of leaf disks in the presence of $SO_2$ might occur mainly through chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ degradation.

A study on the recovery of discoloration of Pyropia yezoensis in laboratory culture (실내배양에서 방사무늬김의 황백화 회복에 대한 연구)

  • To recover the discoloration of Pyropia yezoensis, additional NO3- and PO43- nutrients were supplied to the discolored blades. As a result, the efficiency of photosynthesis was increased from two days after incubation with NO3- and five days after incubation with PO43-. In addition, the chromaticity analysis results showed significant changes. Furthermore, the cell vacuoles bloated due to discoloration were reduced again when they were restored from discoloration, suggesting that the control of discoloration is feasible by nutrient supply.

  • The five different types of bacteria, Bacteroides, Actinomyces, Capnocytophaga, Streptococcus, Fusobacterium which had frequently been recovered in infected canals, were investigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the bacteriologic status in the traumatized nonvital teeth, and to investigate the effects of bacteria on the size of the le8ion and on the discoloration of teeth. The canal contents of sxiteen traumatized nonvital teeth were sampled and cultured aerobically and anaerobically for growth in five selective agar plates for five bacterial species. The sizes of the radiolucent areas in periapical films were measured and according to the sizes, the samples were divided into two groups. The discoloration of the teeth was checked and according to the existence of the discoloration, the samples were divided into two groups, also. The difference of bacterial colonial numbers in each group was investigated and the following results were obtained. 1. In traumatized nonvital teeth, all of the samples gave bacterial growth except one case. 2. Streptococcus was isolated in four cases but Bacteroides, Actinomyces, Fusobacterium and Capnocytophaga were not isolated. 3. The number of bacterial colonies was not found to be related the size of the lesion periapical films. 4. The number of bacterial colonies was not found to be related the discoloration of teeth.

The Inhibition of Green Discoloration in Garlic by Conditioning (Conditioning에 의한 마늘의 녹변억제)

  • Garlic was stored at 4, 8, and $12^{\circ}C$ to investigate the development of green discoloration. Green discoloration developed after 7 day of storage ar $4^{\circ}C$, while it developed after 15 day of storage at 8 and $12^{\circ}C$. The effect of maleic hydrazide fertilization on green discoloration of garlic was not observed. Green discoloration of garlic was accelerated by gamma-radiation treatment. The addition of cysteine did not prevent green discoloration, which decreased the commercial value of the garlic due to the presence of white specks on the surface. When 3% ascorbic acid was added to the garlic, green discoloration developed in 6 and 24 hr at room temperature and $4^{\circ}C$, respectively. The tendency of garlic to discolor was also investigated at various storage temperatures. Discolored garlic stored for 30 day at low temperatures was conditioned at $20{\sim}45^{\circ}C$ for 20 day. The green discoloration of garlic conditioned at 20 and $25^{\circ}C$ did not disappear in 20 day, but disappeared in 20 day when conditioned at $30^{\circ}C$. The L, a, and b values of garlic conditioned at 35, 40, and $45^{\circ}C$ for 4 day were similar to those of normal garlic. Conclusively, our results indicated that the best method for suppressing green discoloration was conditioning discolored garlic at $35^{\circ}C$ for 4 day.

A Study on the Nail Discoloration of the Polish (폴리쉬 사용으로 인한 네일 변색에 관한 연구)

  • Due to rapid growth of nail art industry, various materials and expression tools are have been developed. Increasing number of consumers favor diverse nail art techniques including painting and artificial tips in addition to basic care such as cuticle trimming or coloring. Accordingly, the diversity of polish colors has been settled as a concept of total fashion in addition to the clothes and accessories. As the result, nails may be damaged or discolored. A study the nail discoloration by using polish was purposed that contribute to the development of nail protective products. The tests were conducted with 20 college students for six months from March 3 to Aug. 28, 2009, using digital camera as the measurement apparatus. The students were classified into two groups which applied bright polish (white, beige, pink series) and dark polish (purple, blue, black series), and then divided into the groups applied and not applied the base coat which is known to be effective in preventing nail discoloration, and the groups applied and not applied tonic. The students applied polish for one week, and removed the polish with remover and photographed to examine the degree of nail discoloration. Dark colored polished resulted in earlier coloration and discoloration than the bright colored ones. Base coat could prevent coloration and the color changes of hyponychium and eponychium were lighter than the cases not applied with base coat. Tonic could delay coloration and reduced the color changes of hyponychium showing that tonic was effective for preventing coloration and discoloration of nail in addition to nutrition.

Effect of marine environmental characteristics on a discoloration outbreak of Pyropia yezoensis (방사무늬김 황백화 발생에 해양환경이 미치는 영향)

  • To elucidate the cause of Pyropia yezoensis discoloration, the characteristics of an aquaculture environment, as well as the morphology and cell structure of P. yezoensis thallus were examined from 2011 to 2014 in aquaculture farms of the Jeonbuk province. P. yezoensis discoloration did not occur in aquaculture farms at Gaeyado located in the Geum River Estuary but occurred in aquaculture farms of Seonyudo, Munyeodo, Biando, and Docheongri near the Saemangeum embankment in November 2011 and April and November 2014. The injured leaves showed discoloration and intracellular vacuole hypertrophy. During the study period, discoloration occurred at concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) below 5μM and 0.4μM, respectively. As a result, Pyropia discoloration was determined by low concentrations of DIN and DIP. DIN deficiency affects the early stage and low DIP concentration affects the end stage of aquaculture.

  • Coronal discoloration is a common sequela to traumatic injuries. In subluxation cases, although the injury is not strong enough to rupture the apical vessels, discoloration may appear by tearing thin walls or occluding small capillaries. In absence of infection pulpal regeneration can occur, and as a result discoloration may completely or partially subside. But judging pulpal status by coronal discoloration can be dangerous and it may lead to unnecessary treatment. This case presents coronal discoloration and recovery following traumatic injury of maxillary anterior teeth. In diagnosing traumatized teeth routine cold tests or electric pulp tests are known to be unreliable, but with the aid of ultrasound doppler imaging, assessing pulp vitality of traumatized teeth can be more accurate.

Prevention of the Green-grey Discoloration in Retorted Liquid Whole Eggs (가압살균한 전난액의 녹색변이 방지에 관한 연구)

  • In order to use the liquid whole eggs as an ingredients of retorted products, the provention of the green-grey discoloration of retorted liquid whole eggs by the addition of the Na$_2$EDTA was investigated. And palatability change of the retorted liquid whole eggs by the addition of Na$_2$EDTA was also investigated. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. More severe green-grey discoloration was occurred when higher cooking temperature and longer cooking time were used. 2. Green-grey discoloration of retorted liquid whole eggs could be prevented by the addition of about 0.015% of Na$_2$EDTA. 3. The palatability of retorted liquid whole eggs was not lowered by the addition of 0.02% of Na$_2$EDTA and green grey discoloration was not developed during the storage time of 22 days at room temperature.

Studies on the Storage Stability of Jindo Hongju Pigment (진도홍주색소의 저장안정성에 관한 연구)

  • Jindo Hongju is a traditional liquor in Korea. The characteristic of Hongju are its unique flavour and red color which is extracted from the root of gromwell (Lithospermum erythrorhizon). It is due to these color and flavour that Hongju attracts visual charm. However, the commercial value of Hongju is reduced because of the discoloration of red pigment during storage. Therefore, factors which cause the discoloration of red pigment and methods to prevent discoloration were investigated. The results obtained from this study are summarized as follows. The factors that cause the discoloration were visible light, temperature (beyond $40^{\circ}C$), pH (above 10) and inorganic ion ($Cu^{2-}$). Among all the additives added, Cystein (100 ppm) was the most effective inhibitor of pigment discoloration.
