  • The ionic air pump can be used towards the thermal management of micro-electronic devices, since the size of pump can be reduced to micrometer orders. In addition, an air pump allows air flow control and generation with low noise and no moving parts. These ideal characteristics of the pump give rise to variety applications. However, all of these applications would benefit from maximizing the flow velocities of the pumps. In this study a surface discharge type air pump, with a third electrode, has been investigated by focusing on elevating the wind velocity and efficiency. As a result, the enhanced ionic wind velocity could be obtained with the third electrode of the proposed air pump.

  • Masked intake ports of a DOHC gasoline engine were divised and the shape was optimized to maximize the swirling and tumbling motions in the cylinder. Performances of the ports, swirling number, tumbling number and discharge coefficient were measured by Ricardo's rig test. By combination of the angle and height of the protrusions in the intake ports wall, swirling and tumbling strength can be controlled and the port shape can be optimized to increase the swirling number 13 times and tumbling number 2 times larger than those of an original port of DOHC engine with the expense of 3% decrease of discharge coefficient.

  • In the pressure swirl atomizer, the liquid is injected through tangential passages into a swirl chamber, from which it emerges with both tangential and axial velocity components to form a thin conical sheet at the nozzle exit. This sheet rapidly attenuates, finally disintegrating into ligaments and then drops. The purpose of this study is to measure the spray characteristics according to variation of viscosity of the spray produced by the pressure swirl atomizer. The nozzle tested here were especially designed for this investigation. The discharge coefficient is determined by measuring the volume flow rate with a flow meter and the cone angle of the liquid sheets issuing from the nozzle is obtained from series of photographs of the sheet for various liquid viscosity and injection pressure. And mean drop size is measured by image processing method. It is found that the geometrical characteristics of the nozzle and the variation of viscosity were the influential parameters to determine the spray characteristics such as the cone angle, discharge coefficients and SMD.

  • Using self-made coil dielectric barrier discharge reactor, the removal efficiency of ethyl acetate under simulated experimental parameters such as initial concentration of waste gas, total flow rate, relative humidity and voltage was investigated. The results show that the degradation rate of ethyl acetate increases with the increase of output voltage. When other conditions remain unchanged, the degradation rate decreases with the increase of initial concentration of ethyl acetate; with the increase of total flow rate, the degradation rate of ethyl acetate decreases; with the increase of relative humidity, the degradation rate first increases and then decreases, and when the relative humidity is 64%, the degradation efficiency is the highest.

  • For a R134a rotary vane compressor used for car air conditioners, characteristics of gas compression and oil supply have been studied. The compressor model under investigation has the low volume ratio of suction to discharge volumes so that there occur flow reversal from discharge port to compression chamber as the leading vane passes over the discharge port. As a result, the volumetric and adiabatic efficiencies turn out to be relatively low compared to other types of displacement compressors. Oil supply mechanism has been comprehended for mathematical modeling and oil flow rate has been calculated for the individual oil passages. This study on the gas compression and oil supply of a rotary vane compressor can be applied to a future design practice on a similar type of compressor.

  • In gasoline direct injection injectors, cavitation can be generated inside the hole because of their high injection pressure. In this paper, the effects of cavitation development in injector were investigated depending on the various hole drilling angles were investigated by a numerical method. In order to verify the internal flow model, injection rate and injection quantity of individual holes were measured. The BOSCH long tube method was used to measure the injection rate. As a result, even if the hole diameters were the same, the discharge coefficient differed by up to 10% depending on the hole angle. Moreover, if the hole drilling angle became greater than 30°, the area coefficient and the discharge coefficient decreased as the nozzle outlet was blocked due to cavitation.

  • In this study, the flow characteristics of Han River Estuary were investigated by using a two-dimensional numerical model according to the assumption of shift and modification of the Shingok submerged weir. The two-dimensional analysis has contributed to our understanding of the hydraulic effects induced by shift of the weir on the topography, especially wetlands. The tide and flow discharge of 2007 were adopted as an input data for the simulation. The tidal data contained both spring and neap tide, and the flow discharge condition was divided into monsoon and normal seasons. The boundaries of this study were Hangang Bridge, Tongil Bridge, and Yu island. The simulation results showed that influence area of seawater changed depending on the weir shift, and the water level at particular station fluctuated according to the condition of tide and flow discharge.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of the flow and the movement of the floc were analyzed through the experiments in the sedimentation basin using the redioisotope. Tc-99m radioisotope was used for the experiments for the characteristics of the flow, and the bentonite absorbing Tc-99m radioisotope was used in the experiments for the movement of the floc. Through the experiments of the flow, it was found that the velocities of flow in the sedimentation basin were different depending upon the position and the depth. The distance of the moving trajectories of the floc is increased by increasing the discharge. By increasing the discharge, the settling point is farther from the inlet, and the turbidity removal efficiencies in the sedimentation basin are decreased. The moving velocities of the floc and the density are changed in the different depths in the sedimentation basin.

  • When a warm well located downgradient is captured by cold thermal plume originated from an upgradient cold well, the warm thermal plume is pushed further downgradient in the direction of groundwater flow. If groundwater flow direction is parallel to an aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES), the warm well can no longer be utilized as a heat source during the winter season because of the reduced heat capacity of the warm groundwater. It has been found that when the specific discharge is increased by $1{\times}10^{-7}m/s$ in this situation, the performance of ATES is decreased by approximately 2.9% in the warm thermal plume, and approximately 6.5% in the cold thermal plume. An increase of the specific discharge in a permeable hydrogeothermal system with a relatively large hydraulic gradient creates serious thermal interferences between warm and cold thermal plumes. Therefore, an area comprising a permeable aquifer system with large hydraulic gradient should not be used for ATES site. In case of ATES located perpendicular to groundwater flow, when the specific discharge is increased by $1{\times}10^{-7}m/s$ in the warm thermal plume, the performance of ATES is decreased by about 2.5%. This is 13.8% less reduced performance than the parallel case, indicating that an increase of groundwater flow tends to decrease the thermal interference between cold and warm wells. The system performance of ATES that is perpendicular to groundwater flow is much better than that of parallel ATES.
