  • Cross-drilling on the brake disc is generally known as a way of improving cooling efficiency. In other theories, cross-drilled holes act like a path of gas or water and are also known that they can reduce fading and wetting of brake rotors. However, in disc rotors with cross-drilling, thermal crack phenomena have been reported more frequently and more manufacturing cost should be paid than non cross-drilled disc rotors. In this study, to examine various effects of cross-drilling on the brake disc, two kinds of brake disc rotors, cross-drilled and non cross-drilled, were used in computational fluid dynamic analyses and dynamometer tests.

  • The heat generated by the brake system of vehicles results in reduction of friction force on the brake surface and vibration during a braking. To solve these problems, extensive research for the brake shape has been conducted such as drilling cooling holes on the brake disc, accommodating ventilated holes and etc. In this study, we suggest the circumferential pressing type brake disc in order to improve its cooling performance. In order to compare the cooling-down efficiency between the conventional side-pressing type and the circumferential-pressing type, we adopted the FMVSS 105-77 as thermal analysis conditions and This newly proposed concept has been verified using Thermal-structure Coupled Field Analysis along with comparative analysis with the existing ventilated disk.

  • In this study, we attempted to characterize the physical meaning of the design parameters used for automobile passive dampers by considering the slit, disc, and hole, which influence the pressure characteristics. We also analyzed the change in the pressure characteristics when mixing various slits and discs. Finally, we used a computer simulation to implement lag according to nitrogen gas and analyzed the dependence of frequency on the nitrogen gas pressure.

  • A hole expansion process is an important process in producing a hub-hole in a wheel disc of a vehicle. In this process, the main parameter is the formability of a material that is expressed as the hole expansion ratio. The hub-hole expansion process is different from conventional forming processes or hole flanging processes from the view-point of its deformation mode and forming of a thick plate. In the process, a crack is occurred in the upper edge of a hole as the hole is expanded. Since prediction of the forming limit by hole expansion experiment needs tremendous time and effort, an appropriate fracture criterion has to be developed fur finite element analysis to define forming limit of the material. In this paper, the hole expansion process of a hub-hole is studied by finite element analysis with ABAQUS/standard considering several ductile fracture criteria. The fracture mode and hole expansion ratio is compared with respect to the various fracture criteria. These criteria do not predict its fracture mode or hole expansion ratio adequately and show deviation from experimental results of hole expansion. A modified ductile fracture criterion is newly proposed to consider the deformation characteristics of a material accurately in a hole expansion process. A fracture propagation analysis at the hub-hole edge is also performed for high accuracy of prediction using the new fracture criterion proposed.

  • This study includes thermal plasticity analyses for a turbine rotor with the simple geometry and the boundary conditions. When centrifugal or thermal stress are applied at the high temperature material of engine blade, stress distributions I material ($\sigma$${\gamma}$${\gamma}$, $\sigma$$\theta$$\theta$, $\tau$${\gamma}$$\theta$, Mises stress) are analyzed by computer simulation(ABQUS) as followings; 1. The maximum stress at the radial direction() is applied at the upper middle part of spline hole. 2. The maximum stress at the tangential direction() is applied at the upper right boundary of spline hole. 3. The maximum shear stress () in () direction is applied at the upper middle part of spline hole. 4. The maximum Mises stress is applied at the upper right boundary of spline hole. This stress is due to the critical stress by which rotor can be fractured according to elapsed time.

순차이차계획법과 활성화제약조건을 사용하는 PLBA(Pahenichny-Lim-Belegundu-Arora) 알고르즘을 이용하여 최적해를 구하였다.

  • Ventilated disc was improved for reducing judder and heat. But the crack among vent holes occurs due to stress concentration. We investigate the stress distribution of vent holes. The vent holes with shape of a right angle, a chamfer and rounding was analyzed. The result of FEA was that rounded vent holes have a minimum stress. Also Maximum stress distributed within holes. Therefore We suggest that the rounded vent holes is good to reduce the crack.

  • As expansion and contraction of bike disk brake are happened continuously by temperature at repeated urgent braking. In this study, 3 kinds of model are designed according to configurations of holes and thermal durabilities on bike disk brake are investigated by comparing 3 models through temperature and thermal analyses. Maximum thermal stress happened at the disk contacted with pad and the connection part fixing disk rotor. Instead of initial state, the temperature is uniformly distributed at transient state. As the area of hole at disk rotor face becomes wider, thermal stress becomes lower at the initial state. On the other hand, in case the number of holes increases, thermal stress becomes lower at the elapsed time of 100 seconds. The thermal durability of bike disk brake can be improved by applying this study result with configurations of holes.
