  • Penetration of distributed generator(DG) to power distribution system can cause malfunction of existing protection schemes. Because grid interconnected DG can contribute fault currents and make bidirectional current flows on the system, fault contributions from DG can cause an interference of protection relay operation. Therefore, over current protection device of the distribution system with DGs need directional protection schemes. In this paper, improved directional protection algorithms are proposed for the distribution system with DG considering their fault characteristics. And than, these directional protection algorithms are tested and validated in various fault conditions. From the simulation results, it can be seen that the proposed directional protection algorithms are practically efficient for the radial distribution system with DG.

  • In general, non-directional LED lamps including high transmittance cover are more advantageous than directional LED lamps, which are efficient enough to improve luminous efficacy and obtain certification, allowing wide manufacture, sale, and distribution. Although KS C 7651(Self-ballasted LED lamps-Safety and performance requirements) was revised in July 2013, however, many companies are having a lot of difficulties in keeping the certification and product development for the lack of the photometric analysis for non-directional LED lamps. In this paper, through the measurement of the angular distribution of luminous flux of incandescent lamp and non-directional LED lamps, we examined the reasonability of non-directional LED lamps' standards as suggested in KS C 7651. According to the results, even if non-directional LED lamps satisfy KS C 7651, when compared to an incandescent lamp, they showed less diffusive than the incandescent lamp and the distribution of the luminous flux depending on the angle fluctuated greatly even among LED lamps. Judging by the result, the current standard of the non-directional LED lamps, KS C 7651, has been comprehended that the angular distribution of the luminous flux needs to be presented after being much more thoroughly standardized.

  • The distribution of wave heights is assumed to be a Rayleigh distribution, based on the assumption of a narrow band and Gaussian distribution of wave elevation. The present study was started with doubts about the narrow band assumption. We selected the wave spectra widely used to simulate irregular random waves. The wave spectra used in this study included the Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum, Bretschneider-Mitsuyasu spectrum, and JONSWAP spectrum. The directionality of the waves was considered. The cosine 2-l type directional spreading function and mixed form of the half-cosine 2-s type with Mitsuyasu type directional spreading are considered here to investigate the effects of a directional spreading function on random waves. The simulated wave height distribution is compared with a Rayleigh distribution.

  • Energy and directional distribution of neutrons at the Beloyarsk NPP workplaces is a subject of this study. Measurements of H*(10) rate and neutron energy distribution were taken at 8 workplaces, which can be divided into three categories: work with spent or fresh nuclear fuel, work with radionuclide neutron sources, work at the rooms adjusted to reactors. The Hp(10) measurements were performed only at 6 out of 8 locations, due to the fact that long term placing of an effective neutron moderator in fresh nuclear fuel storage facility is forbidden. As a result of the research energy and direction distribution of the neutron fields at 8 locations of the Beloyarsk NPP workplaces was obtained. To estimate the accuracy of the H*(10) rate and Hp (10) measurements the reference values of dose equivalents were calculated using energy and directional distribution. To take into account the difference between the reference values and the measured results site-specific correction factors were calculated.

  • This study quantified directional properties of channel network and hill slope for a river basin by applying the von Mises distribution, also examined the relation between them. Ultimately, it was examined that whether the directional properties of channel network and hill slope have a certain relation, which might be considered to the rainfall-runoff modeling. From the results derived by analyzing the Naesung stream basin, the von Mises distribution was found well to explain the directional characteristics of directional properties of channel network. There was a clear relation between directional properties of channel network and hill slope. The higher-order streams also showed very obvious modal characteristics. The results derived in this study could be helpful to estimate more quantitatively the difference in the runoff response with respect to the directional properties of channel network and hill slope.

  • In this study, an assessment method that considers the effects of directional wind speeds on buildings or structures that are sensitive to wind is proposed. Also, the basic characteristics of directional wind speeds were assessed by means of local annual maximum wind speeds. From the method of assessment of the characteristics of directional wind speeds, their goodness-of-fit was verified by applying extreme value distribution to the data on annual maximum wind speeds from the Korea Meteorological Administration. To consider the characteristics of directional winds, an assessment method is suggested that divides the directional wind pattern of each directional wind speed into four groups. From the study results, all the data on directional wind speeds based on the Gumbel distribution were examined using data on annual maximum wind speeds from Seoul, Tongyung, and Incheon. Since the Gumbel model of all directional wind speeds has independent probability characteristics that govern the 4 directional wind pattern groups, the application ratio proposed was based on the assessment of these four groups. According to the goodness-of-fit of the data on the annual maximum wind speeds based on the Gumbel distribution, new application ratios were proposed that consider the directional wind speeds in Seoul, Tongyung, and Incheon.

  • The probabilistic information of directional extreme wind speeds is important for precisely estimating the design wind loads on structures. A new joint probability distribution model of directional extreme wind speeds is established based on observed wind-speed data using multivariate extreme value theory with the t-Copula function in the present study. At first, the theoretical deficiencies of the Gaussian-Copula and Gumbel-Copula models proposed by previous researchers for the joint probability distribution of directional extreme wind speeds are analysed. Then, the t-Copula model is adopted to solve this deficiency. Next, these three types of Copula models are discussed and evaluated with Spearman's rho, the parametric bootstrap test and the selection criteria based on the empirical Copula. Finally, the extreme wind speeds for a given return period are predicted by the t-Copula model with observed wind-speed records from several areas and the influence of dependence among directional extreme wind speeds on the predicted results is discussed.

  • With development of electrical power system, the DC distribution system has been considered as a promising technology to be used in the future smart distribution system. Among the various components comprising the DC distribution system, the bi-directional DC/DC converter is one of the most important equipment to interconnect between main power system and various renewable resources such as photovoltaic power generation, wind power generation, and electrical vehicles. In this paper, a bi-directional DC/DC converter based on three-phases interleaved method which is effective to reduce ripple of input current and output voltage is modeled using ElectroMagnetic Transient Program(EMTP), and the verification of modeled bi-directional DC/DC converter is conducted.

  • Recently, the radial distribution system is operating as one-way power flow. These are popular because of their simple design and relatively low cost. However, radial systems are sensitive to outages due to single contingencies. Also, reliability of supply is becoming increasingly important. Accordingly, an appearance of the loop distribution system is inevitable and the other countries such as Macau, Florida, Taiwan are actively working on. The reliability of distribution system is estimated with reliability indices. In this paper, comparing with the radial distribution system, we evaluate and analyse the reliability of loop distribution system quantitatively considering directional relay.

  • The hydrodynamic interaction characteristics between multiple floating bodies of semisubmersible type are examined to present the basic data for the design of huge offshore structures supported by a large number of the floating bodies in multi-directional irregular waves. The numerical approach is based on a combination of a three-dimensional source distribution method, the wave interaction theory and the spectral analysis method. The effects of wave directionality on the wave exciting forces acting on multiple floating bodies in multi-directional irregular waves also have been pointed out.
