  • Pivampicillin hydrochloride is a kind of broad spectrum antibiotics with bactericidal action, and is used in many countries, although it has bitter taste, unpleasant odour and side effects of irritating gastric mucosa, nausea, penicillin allergy, etc. For the improvement of such side effects of pivampicillin hydrochloride, microcapsules, with wall of ethylcellulose, have been prepared by coacervation method. The shape was observed through the scanning electron microscope, the release of the drug into an aqueous medium was studied and the effects of core: ethylcellulose ratio were interpreted as well as making sensory evaluation of taste and odour. There was decreasing trend in dissolution rate of the drug with the increase of core: ethylcellulose ratios, and the smaller microcapsules released their contents more rapidly. A linear relationship was established between the amount of ethylcellulose and the time for 60% release of the drug, and the release pattern was found to have similar characteristics to the release of the drug from an insoluble porous matrix. The release of the drug in the artificial intestinal fluids (pH 6.8) was found to be similar to that in water, while the release in the artificial gastric juice (pH 1.2) was slightly slower. Bioavailability of microcapsule was compared with that of pivampicillin hydrochloride in rabbits using serum concentration and urinary excretion measurements. Microcapsule gave showed slightly higher serum level than pivampicillin hydrochloride from 2 hours after administration, while no significant difference was observed in the accumulated urinary excretion rate between pivampicillin hydrochloride and microcapsule. The ulcer index of pivampicillin hydrochloride administered group was 2.6, and microcapsule administered group was 1.5, while control group was 0.8. Therefore it may be concluded that microencapsulation of pivampicillin hydrochloride is a useful pharmaceutical approach to protect the gastrointestinal tract from being injured by direct contact of pivampicillin hydrochloride without any significant difference of bioavailability.

  • This paper presents the architecture and design of a DSSS MODEM ASIC chip for wireless local area networks (WLAN). The implemented MODEM chip supports the DSSS physical layer specifications of the IEEE 802.11. The chip consits of a transmitter and a receiver which contain a CRC encoder/decoder, a differential encoder/decoder, a frequency offset compensator and a timing recovery circuit. The chip supports various data rates, i.e., 4,2 and 1Mbps and provides both DBPSK and DQPSK for data modulation. We have performed logic synthesis using the $SAMSUNG^{TM}$ $0.6{\mu}m$ gate array library and the implemented chip consists of 53,355 gates. The MODEM chip operates at 44MHz, the package type is 100-pin QFP and the power consumption is 1.2watt at 44MHz. The implemented MODEM architecture shows lower BER compared with the Harris HSP3824.

  • The dynamic instability for snapping phenomena has been studied by many researchers. There is few paper which deal with the dynamic buckling under the load with periodic characteristics, and the behavior under periodic excitation is expected the different behavior against step excitation. In this study, the dynamic direct snapping of shallow elliptic paraboloidal shells is investigated under not only step excitation but also sinusoidal and seismic excitations, applied in the up-and-down direction. The dynamic nonlinear responses are obtained by the numerical integration of the geometrically nonlinear equations of motion, and examined by the Fourier spectral analysis in order to get the frequency-dependent characteristics of the dynamic instability for various load levels. The results show that the dynamic instability phenomenon carried out from stable to unstable region reveals considerably different mechanism depending on the characteristics of excitations.

  • We have developed a position-sensitive Parallel Plate Avalanche Counter (PPAC) to detect the fission fragments and reconstruct the fission reaction plane in the experiment of studying nuclear equation of state (nEOS) by means of heavy ion collision (HIC). This experiment put forward high requirements for the performances of PPAC, such as the time resolution, efficiency and position resolution. According to these requirements we designed the PPAC with an active area of 240 mm × 280 mm working at low gas pressure. The results show that time resolution could be less than 300 ps. Position resolution is consistent with the theoretical calculation about 1.35 mm. Detection efficiency could be approaching 100% gradually with the voltage increasing in different gas pressures. The performances of PPAC have also been verified in beam experiment. Each set of anode wires can be accurately separated in the position spectrum. In the beam experiment, we also got the back-to-back correlation of fission fragments which is one of the direct signals characterizing binary decay.

  • In this paper, a pseudo-noise(PN) tracking and demodulation circuits are analyzed and designed for a direct-sequence/spread-spectrum multiple access system under a mobile fading channel. We consider noncoherent delay locked loop(DLL) as a PN code tracking loop which has 1/8 PN chip resolution. The tracking performance of DLL is evaluated in terms of locking time from a loose state and tracking jitter. The received signal is demodulated to original data by despreading with PN code locked by DLL. Also the designed circuit supports sound service of 32Kbps and in-band signal with 4.096MHz chip clock. The circuits are implemented and verified with FPGA, which is shown completely data recovery under AWGN 7dB and will be available for IMT-2000.

  • LTE Re1-10 aims at peak. data rates of 1Gbits/s for the downlink and 500 Mbits/s for the uplink, which can be accomplished by not only wide spectrum but also advanced MIMO techniques such as precoded MIMO and cooperative relays. Considering some relays can have more direct signal paths than mobile stations do, LoS components are examined to build more efficient codebooks for Rician channels. The proposed codebooks perform better than the existing LTE codebooks as the criterium of LoS, K-factor increases. Conserving the advantages and max-min chordal distance of the existing LTE codebooks, the proposed ones also maximize the minimum chordal distances between codewords over Rician fading channels. Link-level simulation with LTE system parameters confirm the performance improvements as the value of K increases.

  • We propose a parallel acquisition scheme using antenna arrays for initial acquisition of direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DS-SS) signals. The proposed parallel scheme can lower substantially the range of detectable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as compared to the conventional parallel scheme with a single antenna. The proposed scheme uses the sum of the independent decision samples from antenna arrays corresponding to an identical subsequence of the pseudonoise (PN) code as a decision variable. We derive the probabilities of detection, missing, and false alarm under an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and a flat Rayleigh fading channel. Using these, we get the mean acquisition time of the proposed scheme. From numerical results, we see that the acquisition performance becomes improved continually as the number of antennas increases.

  • Shallow footings are one of the most common types of foundations used to support mid-rise buildings in high risk seismic zones. Recent findings have revealed that the dynamic interaction between the soil, foundation, and the superstructure can influence the seismic response of the building during earthquakes. Accordingly, the properties of a foundation can alter the dynamic characteristics (natural frequency and damping) of the soil-foundation-structure system. In this paper the influence that shallow foundations have on the seismic response of a mid-rise moment resisting building is investigated. For this purpose, a fifteen storey moment resisting frame sitting on shallow footings with different sizes was simulated numerically using ABAQUS software. By adopting a direct calculation method, the numerical model can perform a fully nonlinear time history dynamic analysis to realistically simulate the dynamic behaviour of soil, foundation, and structure under seismic excitations. This three-dimensional numerical model accounts for the nonlinear behaviour of the soil medium and structural elements. Infinite boundary conditions were assigned to the numerical model to simulate free field boundaries, and appropriate contact elements capable of modelling sliding and separation between the foundation and soil elements are also considered. The influence of foundation size on the natural frequency of the system and structural response spectrum was also studied. The numerical results for cases of soil-foundation-structure systems with different sized foundations and fixed base conditions (excluding soil-foundation-structure interaction) in terms of lateral deformations, inter-storey drifts, rocking, and shear force distribution of the structure were then compared. Due to natural period lengthening, there was a significant reduction in the base shears when the size of the foundation was reduced. It was concluded that the size of a shallow foundation influences the dynamic characteristics and the seismic response of the building due to interaction between the soil, foundation, and structure, and therefore design engineer should carefully consider these parameters in order to ensure a safe and cost effective seismic design.

  • Recently, performance-based analysis/design methods such as the capacity spectrum method and the direct displacement-based design method were developed. In these methods, estimation of energy dissipation capacity of RC structures depends on empirical equations which are not sufficiently accurate, On the other hand, in a recent study, a simplified method for evaluating energy dissipation capacity was developed. In the present study, based on the evaluation method, a new seismic design method for flexure-dominated RC walls was developed. In determination of earthquake load, the proposed design method can address variations of energy dissipation capacity with design parameters such as dimensions and shapes of cross-sections, axial force, and reinforcement ratio and arrangement, The proposed design method was compared with the current performance-based design methods. The applicability of the proposed method was discussed.

  • In this paper, we propose optimal and suboptimal serial code acquisition schemes for chip-asynchronous direct-sequence spread-spectrum systems. The conventional serial code acquisition scheme is to compare each value of correlator outputs with a threshold individually. However, such a scheme is optimum only under the chip-synchronous assumption which is actually very difficult to be held prior to acquisition at the receiver because the signal-to-noise ratios before despreading are very low. In this paper, an optimal serial code acquisition scheme is derived based on the maximum-likelihood criterion under the more realistic and general chip-asynchronous environments. A suboptimal scheme, which is simpler but yields comparable performance to the optimal one, is also derived based on the criterion of local detection power Numerical results show that, under the chip-asynchronous environments, both the optimal and suboptimal serial code acquisition schemes outperform the conventional serial code acquisition scheme.
