  • This study was performed to investigate the residual characteristics of the insecticide dinotefuran in asparagus under greenhouse conditions from July to August and consequentially to obtain basic data for guidelines on the safe use of this pesticide in asparagus. Residues of dinotefuran in young stem of asparagus before and after growing mother stem were analyzed from samples collected at 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 days after single application of a commercial formulation of dinotefuran (wettable powder, 10%) at the recommended dose (2,000 times dilution). The residue of dinotefuran in young stem of asparagus was analyzed by HPLC-UVD, and recovery of dinotefuran in young stem was tested at 0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg concentrations. As a result, the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of dinotefuran was 0.01 mg/kg, and the recovery of dinotefuran was in the range of 83.3-94.0% with a coefficient of variation less than 10%. Residues of dinotefuran in young stem of asparagus before and after growing the mother stem were lower than the tentative limit (0.05 mg/kg) from 5 and 3 days after single application, respectively. Based on these results, single application of dinotefuran (wettable powder, 10%) at the recommended dose at 7 days before harvest would have no deleterious effects on safety issues concerning pesticide residue. This result might provide basic information to construct guidelines for the safe use of dinotefuran in asparagus.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the toxicities of five registered insecticides to the Lycorma delicatula nymphs and adults. Insecticidal activities were evaluated by testing systemic and residual effects in the laboratory, and control efficacy in the vineyard. For the 3rd nymphal instars and adults, etofenprox+diazinon, chlorpyrifos, etofenprox, dinotefuran and imidacloprid showed perfect insecticidal activity. The systemic effects of dinotefuran and etofenprox+diazinon on grape roots at half concentration were showed the adult mortality of 82.2% and 84.4%, respectively. Chlorpyrifos at recommended concentration was showed mortality of 86.0%. The leaf systemic effects at recommended and half concentrations of all insecticides except dinotefuran were lower than 65% but the mortality at double concentration of chlorpyrifos, dinotefuran, etofenprox were more than 82%. The residual effect between etofenprox+diazinon and dinotefuran at recommended and double concentrations were 100% at 14 days after treatment, the other insecticides have low efficacy. All the four insecticides showed 87% control value on nymphs in the field test and adults appeared more than 96% control value st and adinotefuran, etofenprox+diazinon, however, the other insecticides decreased to 59.1 % and 61.2%. Therefore, dinotefuran and etofenprox+diazinon showing high systemic effects to roots and long residual effects to leafs have high control efficacies.

  • We investigated the control of Bemisia tabaci adults in tomato greenhouses using the eggplant as a trap plant with 4 systemic chemicals. The control effect of dinotefuran SG 50% on tobacco whitefly adults was 80% mortality, the highest than that cyantraniliprole, pyridaben and clothianidin, 51.0%, 12.4% and 11.0% respectively when all chemicals with recommended doses were used. Dinotefuran was applied at various doses and was observed to be most effective above 200ppm (88.4%)t. The control effect of dinotefuran lasted for appromimately nine 9 days and the density of tobacco whitefly adults increased there after. In field tests, the densities of tobacco whitefly adults on tomato shoots were highest at points 0, 15 and 20 m from the eggplant traps and lowest at 5 and 10 m. When the density of tobacco whitefly was low and the eggplants with dinotefuran SG 50% were placed in the tomato greenhouse at 10 m intervals, the overall density of tobacco whitefly adults was lower. In addition, densities were higher at the side of the greenhouse than in the interior and further away from the eggplant. When the density of tobacco whitefly was high and the eggplants with dinotefuran were placed at 5 m intervals, the density of tobacco whitefly at each 5 m point decreased. Theses results confirm that the eggplant is an effective trap plant for attracting tobacco whitefly audlts and combined with dinotefuran SG 50% decreases the density of tobacco whitefly in tomato greenhouses.

  • The changes of feeding pattern and the amount of insecticide penetrated into the leaf were monitored for 420 min after treatment of three concentrations of dinotefuran. At about 30 min after treatment of insecticide, the overall feeding pattern in EPG (Electrical Penetration Graph) monitoring was started to change, and there was significant difference in proportions of NP (non-penetration), PA (pathway activity), and phloem-feeding patterns among the different concentrations of dinotefuran treatment. Especially, as the amount of insecticide penetrated into a leaf increased, the reactive behaviors against this insecticide such as withdrawal of proboscis and movements of stylet of aphid were more quickly exhibited. And also, total time at which the proboscis of the aphids did not penetrate the plant was getting longer. The amount of dinotefuran penetrated into a leaf was monitored with HPLC. When the recommended concentration (100 mg/L) of the insecticide was treated, 5.24${\sim}$7.24 mg/L of the insecticide was detected from the leaf, and the proboscis of the aphids was apparently withdrawn from the leaf at approximately 60 minutes after treatment of this insecticide.

  • Vespa velutina nigrithorax du Buysson, 1905 is the invaded species in Korea since 2003. Since its importance as the honey bee pest, beekeepers use insecticides to kill the adult and immature hornets. However, its legality and effectiveness has not been confirmed. This study investigated the susceptibility of insecticides commonly used to control hornets by beekeepers in Korea. Eight insecticides were tested on adult worker and larvae by topical or oral treatment. Adults showed more than 70% mortalities from Clothianidin, Dinotefuran, and Carbosulfan treatment within 30 minutes. Bifenthrin and Cartap hydrochloride showed relatively low toxicity. The median lethal dose (LD50) for Clothianidin, Dinotefuran, and Carbosulfan was 0.29, 0.65, and 2.21 ㎍/bee, respectively. In larval feeding test where 5th instar larvae were fed 3 times every 24 hours, the mortality began after second treatments. After 3rd treatments (72 h), all insecticides showed mortality more than 70%. The LD50 values of Clothianidin, Dinotefuran, and Carbosulfan to V. velutina were approximately 10 to 100 times higher than those to honey bee, Apis mellifera. This study provides the basic information of those chemical toxicities to Vespa hornet and honey bees.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was performed to determine residual characteristics of soil-treated metalaxyl-M and dinotefuran in crown daisy and to evaluate the risks from intake of the residual pesticides in the crop. METHODS AND RESULTS: The pesticide granules were treated in soil on two levels, and the plants samples were collected 51 days after seeding. The analytes were extracted and partitioned using the QuEChERS extraction packet (MgSO4 4 g, NaCl 1 g). The quantitative methods for metalaxyl-M and dinotefuran were validated in linearity, accuracy, and precision. Risk assessments of the pesticides were performed using Korea national nutrition statistics 2019. CONCLUSION(S): The residual concentrations of metalaxyl-M in crown daisy were 0.09-0.10 mg/kg (for the treatment at 6 kg/10 a) and 0.17-0.19 mg/kg (12 kg/10 a), respectively. The residual concentrations of dinotefuran in the crop were 0.53-0.75 mg/kg (3 kg/10 a) and 1.17-1.26 mg/kg (6 kg/10 a). The amounts of pesticides were less than MRL (Maximum Residue Limits) according to the Korean MFDS (Ministry of Food and Drug Safety). The HI (Hazard Index) of metalaxyl-M and dinotefuran for consumers was 0.0075% and 0.2250%, respectively. For females in the age between 50-64, the major consumer group, the HIs of the pesticides were <3%. Considering the consumption of crown daisy, they are not considered to be of toxicological concern.

  • To control Bemisia tabaci on tomato, we applied five different combinations of chemical treatments as below: 1) treatment of combinations of cyantraniliprole on the root area and leaf with the existing registered chemicals three times; 2) treatment of combinations of cyantraniliprole on the root area and dinotefuran + emamectin benzoate on the leaf with the existing registered chemicals three times; 3) treatment of combinations of dinotefuran on the root area and cyantraniliprole on the leaf with the existing registered chemicals three times; 4) treatment of combinations of dinotefuran on the root area and dinotefuran + emamectin benzoate on the leaf with the existing registered chemicals three times; 5) untreated control plot (Table 1). Twenty days after treatment ($17^{th}$ Aug.), the number of population of B. tabaci was zero on the 1, 2, 3, 4 treatments of combinations, and only 2 individuals were found on the 5 treatment of combination per each 20 plant. On $17^{th}$ Sep., in the last observation, the average number of population of B. tabaci was 10.3, 10.3, 10.6 on the 1, 2, 3 treatments of combinations on the 20 plants per each combination, however, the average number of 23.3 and 37.6 were examined on the 4 and 5 treatments of combinations, respectively. TYLCV was not occurring on the 1 and 2 treatments of combinations, and presented only 3% and 17% on the 3 and 4 treatments of combinations, respectively, which indicates that the treatments (1-4) should be effective on TYLCV control as considering that 33% of TYLCV occurred on the untreated control plot. However, after the third flowering period, there is no difference among the five combinations. The amount of products was 9,148g and 9,698g on the 1 and 2 treatments of combinations, respectively, which was the most among the 5 combinations. The number of fallen fruits and the average weight of fruits showed the similar tendency.

  • To development of the low toxic preservatives, we prepared 29 kinds of chemicals using dinotefuran of low toxic insecticide, IPBC and propiconazol of fungicide, and clove oil has fungicidal activity, but is harmless to humans. It was conducted to investigate the inhibitory effectiveness of mycelial growth and anti-mold effectiveness to treated PDA medium and wood specimen with prepared chemicals. It was not showed anti-mold effectiveness that solvent and emulsifier form preservatives. Therefor, we thought that only four component, dinotefuran, IPBC, propiconazol and clove oil, has anti-mold effectiveness. In the PDA medium test, the preservative which has much IPBC showed high anti-mold effectiveness. By the wood specimen test, it was known that many prepared preservatives which showed good inhibitory effectiveness of mycelial growth in the PDA medium test, have not anti-mold effectiveness. Of all prepared preservatives in this study, only three preservatives containing dinotefuran and IPBC, or adding clove oil appeared the excellent anti-mold effectiveness.

  • Stink bugs do damage on various crops including upland crops and tree fruits. Especially, yellow-brown stink bug (Halyomorpha halys ($St{\aa}l$)) and brown-winged green (Plautia stali) are severely damaged on apple orchard. Using seven insecticides - dinotefuran WP, etofenprox WP, chlorpyrifos WP, cabaryl WP, chlothianidin SC, flonicamid WG, and bifenthrin WG - registered on apple, contact and residual toxicities were tested on both male and female of P. stali and H. halys that preferred apple fruit. Contact toxicity of dinotefuran WP was excellent on male P. stali 48 hours after treatment (HAT) with 96.7% and significant on male Halyomorpha halys 48 HAT with 74.5% but the others had low effect. Contact toxicity on these stink bugs were higher in male than female. All insecticides except flonicamid, residual effects were all effective on both male and female of P. stali, while chlorpyrifos and bifenthrin were showed higher residual toxicity on both male and female of H. halys in laboratory condition. Two insecticides, chlorpyrifos and bifenthrin, were selected for the field test. Bifenthrin have a high residual effect on P. stali until 5 days after treatment, but have a low residual toxicity on H. halys in the field test. Chlorpyrifos showed higher residual toxicity in the laboratory, however, showed low residual efficacy on two species stink bug onto the field.
