  • An experimental study has been carried out to investigate an I-type sparger-performance in view of pressure oscillation and thermal mixing in a pool. Its pitch-to-hole diameter, P/D, varies from 2 to 5. The test conditions are restricted to the condensation oscillation regime. In the present study, two different hole patterns, staggered and parallel types, are employed under various test conditions. The amplitude of the pressure pulse shows a peak for pool temperatures of 45∼85$\^{C}$, which depends on P/D and the steam mass flux. The effect of hole pattern on the pressure load is smaller than that of P/D. The dominant frequency increases with the subcooling temperature of pool water and P/D. A correlation for the dominant frequency is proposed in terms of the pitch-to-hole diameter ratio and other dimensionless thermal hydraulic parameters.

  • In this study, the adequacy of Reynolds numbers and Froude numbers derived from about sixty domestic water treatment plants (WTPs) were analyzed in order to estimate the characteristics of hydraulic behavior within the rectangular shaped sedimentation basins used widely. From the results of analysis, most of domestic WTPs have satisfied the criteria regulated as that Reynolds number should less than 1,000(dimensionless). On the other hand, they have not been able to satisfy the Froude number criteria, which should be higher than $1.0{\times}10^{-6}$. The reasons why most of domestic WTPs could not satisfy the criteria are that its criteria basis has been not only inadequate, but also the concept of external flow occurred around a settling particle has been ignored. Accordingly, this study proved the feasibility of Archimedes number, which indicates the ratio between particle Reynolds number and Froude number, to evaluate the hydraulic efficiency and its function of scale factor.

  • A series of laboratory experiments has been performed to investigate the behaviour of interfacial layer of saltwater wedge in estuary. Experimental conditions have been established according to densimetric Froude number, which is a dimensionless number comparing inertia force with buoyancy due to the density difference. To observe the behaviour of saltwater wedge, conductivity meter has been used to detect salinity. Time averaged and temporal variation of observed properties have been analyzed to determine and investigate the interfacial layer. The location and profile of interfacial layers have shown the dependency on densimetric Froude number. The thickness of interfacial layer has been also dependent on the variation of densimetric Froude number.

  • A series of laboratory experiments has been performed to investigate the flow characteristics of 2-dimensional density currents induced by selective withdrawal, which is commonly suggested as a measure for removal of high turbid water from reservoirs. Saltwater has been used to simulate the density stratification over depth and PIV(Particel Image Velocimetry) for observing the velocity structure. Experimental conditions have been established according to Richardson number, which is the dimensionless number that expresses the ratio of potential to kinetic energy. From the experiments, the patterns of longitudinal decay of centerline axial velocity induced by the withdrawal have been distinguished from other experimental cases. The rate of longitudinal decay increase as the Richardson number increases. The variations of volumetric and momentum flux along the longitudinal axis have also shown to be dependent on Richardson number.

  • Shape optimization of an internal cooling passage with staggered dimples on single surface is performed and performances of surrogates are evaluated in this paper. Optimizations are performed so that turbulent heat transfer can be enhanced compromising with pressure loss due to friction. The three-dimensional governing differential equations have been solved to find the overall Nusselt number and friction factor which are related to the objective functions of this problem. Three design variables were selected among the dimensionless geometric variables. Basic surrogate models such as second order polynomial response surface approximation (RSA), Kriging meta-modeling technique, radial basis neural network (RBNN), and derived press based averaged (PBA) surrogate model are constructed. The optimal points are searched from the above constructed surrogates by sequential quadratic programming (SQP). It is shown that use of multiple surrogates can increase the robustness in prediction of better design with minimum computational cost.

  • A manipulator is operated for the motion of mechanical hands or arms by mechanical mechanism. When a cup including liquid inside is shifted by a manipulator, it is important to know how a free surface of the liquid moves. In this study, non-dimensional parameters have been found that affect the rise of the free surface in a cup moving with constant acceleration. The non-dimensional parameters are the dimensionless time, the ratio of inertia effect to vicous effect (Reynolds number), aspect ratio of the liquid inside the cup and acceleration ratio (Froude number). Through this study, the height of the free surface rise in a cup has been predicted. Generally the maximum rise of the free surface is dependent on the Reynolds number and Froude number strongly, but on the aspect ratio weakly. But the influence of the aspect ratio on the maximum rise of the free surface in not negligible in the range 10 < Re < 100.

  • In a usual painting process, a liquid drop spreads on canvas by being dragged along a paintbrush. To obtain the fundamental understanding of the painting process from the mechanical point of view, we experimentally investigate various dynamic behavior of a liquid drop that spreads between moving solid plates. It is shown that three distinct types of drop spreading take place, i.e. shearing, spreading, and intact dragging, depending on the liquid viscosity and surface tension, the plate speed, and the wettability. We suggest a regime map based on the capillary number and the receding contact angle, which indicates the boundaries between different types of spreading behavior in a dimensionless space.

  • This paper primarily directed toward analyzing the frequency response in hydraulic pipe lines with a small diameter. The exact solution to the frequency response is obtained by using the complicated transfer function. The discrepancy with the exact and the approximate is small so the approximation solution is adopted to compare the experimental results with the theoretical analysis. In this experiment the input frequency was generated by the frequency generator with the ball valve and speed controller. In order to compare the theoretical were forms with the experimental ones the trace obtained from the oscilloscope is photographed, The diameter the length of lines and input pressure amplitude are varied to investigate their effects,. the experiment results show that th values of dimensionless parameter are very affected to the phase delay and guide response time in the design of pressure manifold to measure the pressure of hydraulic pipelines.

  • This paper presents quasi-zero-stiffness (QZS) characteristic of a passive isolator using flexures under compression force. The passive isolator consists of a positive stiffness element (a vertical coil spring) and a negative stiffness element (flexures under compression force), and their proper combination of the positive and negative stiffness elements can produce both substantial static and zero dynamic stiffness, so called QZS. Firstly, a nonlinear dimensionless expression of a flexure under compression force is derived. A dynamic model of the passive isolator is developed and numerical simulations of its time and frequency response are performed. Then, undesirable nonlinear vibration is quantified using a period doubling bifurcation diagram and a Poincare's map of the isolator under forced excitation. Finally, experiments are performed to validate the QZS characteristic of the passive isolator.

  • In this paper, elastic and plastic adhesion index was very important in deciding adhesive characteristics and varying elastic and plastic index, dimensionless load and pull-off force were analyzed and simulated. Finally, using AFM, experimental surface roughness parameters of substrates and pull-off force between tip and substrates were produced. Using these values, pull-off forces were calculated and were compared with experimental pull-off forces. Through simulation and experiment, it was found that interaction of asperity also had very important influence on adhesive contact.
