  • In this study, the polyurethane microcapsules for non-aqueous dyeing containing iron oxide and disperse dyes were prepared by in-situ polymerization method using hexamethylene diisocyanate(HDI) with ethylene glycol(EG). And the size, shape, and particle size distribution of microcapsules prepared were investigated. The size and shape of microcapsule were observed by optical microscope and scanning elecron microscope. The particle size distribution was analyzed by particle size analyzer. The microcapsule size and its distribution were largely effected by the existance of surface active agent in the system. When a surfactant did not exist in the system, the size distribution of microcapsules prepared was much uneven. By adding a surfactant, this phenomenon was disappeared. And the size of microcapsule was also effeced by the hydrophobicity of core material(disperse dye). It was considered due to the difference of dispersity of core materials. And the size of microcapsule prepared was inversely proportional to the stirring speed.

  • Tricrecyl phosphate(TCP)-containing polyurea microcapsules were prepared by interfacial polymerization using aromatic 2,4-toluene diisocyanate(TDI) and ethylenediamine(EDA) as wall forming materials. The effects of the protective colloids of polyvinylalcohol(PVA) and gelatin were investigated through experimentation. The mean size of prepared polyurea microcapsules was smaller and the surface morphology of the microcapsule prepared by the PVA as protective colloid was much smoother than the gelatin. As the concentration of protective colloid increased, the wall membrane of the polyurea microcapsules became more stable, the thermal stability of the wall membrane increased, the mean particle size became smaller, and the particle distribution was more uniform. PET containg microTCPs have a higher activation energy of decomposition, higher char content and lower heat of combustion.

  • Poloxamer, block copolymers of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide was crosslinked by diisocyanates and triisocyanates to form water-swellable, physically strong, rubber-like elastic, high biocompatible polyurethanes. The isocyanate-hydroxyl stoichiometry was kept 1:1, but the crosslinking density was varied. The variations examined were the ratio of diisocyanate and triisocyanate. The delivery of two drugs of different water solubilities from hydrogel matrices was studied. It appeared that the drug nature greatly influenced its release kinetics possibly due to drug-polymer interactions. The release profiles, however, could be modified to a great extent by adjusting the polymer network structure Generally the high crosslinking density was required for prolonged drug delivery.

  • Polyurethane microcapsules were synthesized by interfacial polymerization in an aqueous poly(ethylene glycol) dispersion with ethylenediamine as chain extender of toluene diisocyanate in perfume oil using poly(vinyl alcohol) as the stabilizing agent. The effect of chemical structure on the average particle size and distributions, morphologies, and thermal properties to design microcapsules for the sustained release system was investigated. It came to be known that polyurethane microcapsules with ethylene diamine as chain extender had a rounder, more permeable and controlled release membranes. And the release test of polyurethane microcapsules with different soft segment content was done to certify the effect of long methylene chain. According to the higher molecular weight of polyether polyol, the release rate of microencapsulated disperse dye molecular was faster.

  • Abstract Polyurethanes have been designed and fabricated into membranes with unique separation properties. Moreover, polyurethane microcapsules also have been reported actively as controlled release materials for their excellent blood compatibility, tensile strength and permeability. In this study, polyurethane microcapsules were synthesized by interfacial polymerization in an aqueous poly(ethylene glycol) dispersion of toluene diisocyanate in perfume oil using poly(vinyl alcohol) as the stabilizing agent. The effect of a few important process conditions on the average particle size and distributions, morphologies, and thermal properties to design microcapsules for the sustained release system was investigated.

  • Calix[4]crown-6-2,4-bis(2-hydroxyethyl ether) (2), which has crown-6 moieties at the 1- and 3-positions and hydroxyethyl functions at the 2- and 4-positions, was prepared for the syntheses of polyester 3 and polyurethane 4 by reactions with adipoyl chloride and hexamethylene diisocyanate, respectively. The ion binding characteristics of monomer 2 and polymers 3 and 4 toward alkali and alkali earth metal ions were measured by liquid-liquid extraction from the aqueous phase into the organic phase. We observed that the polyurethane 4 has a higher binding affinity toward various metal cations when compared to polyester 3, which exhibits cesium ion selectivity.

  • The purpose of this research was to synthesize fluorine modified waterborne polyurethane dispersion (F-WPU) by soap-free (internal emulsifier) emulsion polymerization techniques, to prepare coating solution based on fluorine modified waterborne polyurethane dispersion (F-WPU) and to compare the chemical and thermo-mechanical properties on the electrogalvanized steel sheet. Environmentally friendly F-WPU was prepared with a fluorinated polyol containing 60 wt% of fluorine. There are various ways of combining a wide variety of fluorinated polyols and diisocyanate to exhibit novel properties of waterborne polyurethane dispersion. Components of coating solution were largely divided into 4 kinds i.e., F-WPU, acrylic emulsion, silane coupling agent, and colloidal silicate. F-WPU coating solution on the electro-galvanized steel sheet showed excellent properties of corrosion resistance, alkali resistance and heat resistance, as compared to other coating solutions using a general waterborne resin. The F-WPU coating solution's reliable effects are possibly due to the fluorine atoms incorporated even in a small amount of F-WPU.

  • One-pack cross-linkable nanocomposites of waterborne methyl ethyl ketoxime (MEKO)-blocked aromatic polyurethane dispersion (BPUD) reinforced with organoclay (quaternary ammonium salt of Cloisite 25A) were synthesized by the acetone process using 4,4'-methylenedi-p-phenyl diisocyanate (MDl), poly(tetramethylene) glycol (PTMG), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA), and methyl ethyl ketoxime (MEKO). Particle size, viscosity, and storage stability of these nanocomposites were investigated. TEM and XRD studies confirmed that the silicate layers of organophilic clay were exfoliated and intercalated at a nanometer-scale in the BPUD matrix.

  • Poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL-PEG-PCL) multiblock copolymers at various hydrophobic-hydrophilic ratios were successfully synthesized by the chain extension of triblock copolymers through isocyanate (hexamethylene diisocyanate). Biodegradable films were prepared from the resulting multiblock copolymers using the casting method. The mechanical properties of the films were improved by chain extension of the triblock copolymers, whereas the films prepared by the triblock copolymers were weak and brittle. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) of the multiblock copolymer film showed that the hydrophilic PEG had segregated on the film surface. This is consistent with the observed contact angle of the films.

  • The effect of the NCO index and catalyst type on the thermal stability of poly(urethane-isocyanurate) (PUIR) foams was investigated to identify a method for enhancing the flame resistance of PUIR. PUIR foams were prepared using 4,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and [(diethylene glycol)adipate]diol, which were synthesized by esterification of adipic acid and diethylene glycol. Dabco K-15, Dabco TMR-30, and Toyocat RX-5 were used as the catalysts for trimerization and gelation. The amount of urea and isocyanurate groups in PUIR was semi-quantitatively determined by normalizing their absorbance with the phenyl absorbance measured by FT-IR. The normalization data showed that Dabco TMR-30 effectively generated isocyanurate groups in PUIR. As a result, Dabco TMR-30 effectively raised the decomposition temperature and increased the 800 K and 900 K residues of the PUIR foam synthesized with an NCO index of 200.
