Mechanism of Tungsten Recovery from Spent Cemented Carbide by Molten Salt Electrodeposition

  • The accumulation of spent carbide (YG8), not only pollutes the environment but also causes waste of tungsten, cobalt and other rare metal resources. To better address this issue, we proposed a combined electrochemical separation process of low-temperature aqueous solution and high-temperature molten salt for tungsten and cobalt. H2WO4 was obtained from spent carbide in an aqueous solution, and we calcined it to obtain WO3, which was used as a raw material to obtain tungsten by using molten salt electrodeposition. The influence of the current efficiency and the electrochemical behavior of the discharge precipitation of W(VI) were also studied. The calcination results showed that the morphology of WO3 was regular and there were no other impurities. The maximum current efficiency of 82.91% was achieved in a series of electrodeposition experiments. According to XRD and SEM analysis, the recovered product was high purity tungsten, which belongs to the simple cubic crystal system. In the W(VI) reduction mechanism experiments, the electrochemical process of W(VI) in NaCl-Na2WO4-WO3 molten salt was investigated using linear scanning voltammetry (LSV) and chronoamperometry in a three-electrode system. The LSV showed that W(VI) was reduced at the cathode in two steps and the electrode reaction was controlled by diffusion. The fitting results of chronoamperometry showed that the nucleation mechanism of W(VI) was an instantaneous nucleation mode, and the diffusion coefficient was 7.379×10-10 cm2·s-1.

  • This study was implemented to find an optimal model for wastewater treatment processes using PHOENICS(Parabolic, hyperbolic or Elliptic Numerical Integration Code Series) and ASM(Activated Sludge Model). PHOENICS is a general software based upon the laws of physics and chemistry which govern the motion of fluids, the stresses and strains in solids, heat flow, diffusion, and chemical reaction. The wastewater flow and removal efficiency of particle in two phase system of a grit chamber in wastewater treatment plant were analyzed to inquire the predictive aspect of the operational model. ASM was developed for a biokinetic model based upon material balance in complex activated sludge systems, which can demonstrate dynamic and spatial behavior of biological treatment system. This model was applied to aeration tank and settling chamber in Choonchun city, and the modeling result shows dynamic transport in aeration tank. PHOENCS and ASM could be contributed for the optimal operation of wastewater treatment plant.

백금전극(白金電極)에 의한 파라크레졸의 양극전해(陽極電解) 산화특성(酸化特性) (A Study on the Oxidation Characteristics of p-Cresol on Pt Anode)

  • The electrochemical oxidation behavior of p-cresol on platinum anode had been investigated by cyclic voltammetric method for the variation of concentration, scan rate of potential, temperature and pH of electrolyte. The oxidation potential of p-cresol was dependent on the electrolyte until the pH=11.5, but in basic solution over its, it was held at o.40V(vs. SCE). A diffusion was rate determining step of oxidation as irreversible reaction by the transfer atone electron. The current of peak was proportional to concentration of p-cresol until the 0.1N and optimum concentration was found to be about 0.1N. The activation energy was calculated for 5.8kcal/mol from the plot of log $I_l$ vs. 1/T.

  • The chemical behavior and properties of the redox state of environmental pollutants were investigated using electrochemical methods. Cyclic voltammograms were performed on the compounds to measure the variations in the redox reactions. Temperature and pH were established as influencing the redox potential and current. The electrode reactions were a mixture of quasi-reversible and irreversible Precesses, which changed according to the reaction current. Although the Co(BPA)$_2$ and Cu(BPA)$_2$ compounds were not found to dissociate in wastewater, they were very unstable(K=1.02).

  • Recently, premature reinforcement corrosion in concrete structures exposed to chloride containing environments has an important problem. This is due to an increasing use of marine aggregate of chloride containing admixture a the mixing stage and due to an increase of concrete construction in marine environments. In this study, the behavior of chloride ions introduced into concrete from concrete surface by a marine environment was modeled. The physicochemcial processes including the diffusion of chloride ion in aqueous phase of pores, the adsorption and desorption of chloride ions to and from the surface of solid phase of concrete, and the chemical reaction of chloride ion with solid phase were analyzed by using the finite element method. The results of this study may be used to predict the onset of reinforcement corrosion, and identify the maximum limit of chloride ions contained in admixtures.

A Kinetic Investigation of Ethanol Oxidation on a Nickel Oxyhydroxide Electrode

  • Nickel modified NiOOH electrodes were used for the electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol in alkaline solutions where the methods of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) were employed. In CV studies, in the presence of ethanol, an increase in the current for the oxidation of nickel hydroxide is followed by a decrease in the corresponding cathodic current. This suggests that the oxidation of ethanol is being catalysed through mediated electron transfer across the nickel hydroxide layer comprising of nickel ions of various valence states. Under the CA regime the reaction followed a Cottrellian behavior and the diffusion coefficient of ethanol was found to be $1{\times}10^7cm^2s^{-1}$.

  • The behavior of electrodeposition of amorphous nickel-phosphorus has been studied from the point of deposition mechanism, kinetic parameters, morphology and formation of alloy films. The electorode reaction and electrode kinetics of deposition of nickel were significantly influenced by the content of phosphorus. The cathodic deposition of nickel-phosphorus alloy might be governed by the diffusion process of phosphorous acid. The direction of growth layer of the nickel-phosphorus alloy was different with substrate material. The formation of nickel-phosphorus alloy films was affected considerably by the solution compositions, electrolytic conditions and properties of the material as an underlayer.

  • 백금전극에 의한 페놀의 전기화학적 산화거동을 순환 전류전압법에 의하여 연구 검토하였다. 페놀의 초기산화전위는 산성용액에서는 전해질용액의 액성에 크게 영향을 받으나, 염기성용액에서는 0.33-0.40V범위로 거의 일정한 산화전위를 나타내었고, 페놀의 농도변화에 따른 전기화학적 산화의 최적농도는 0.IN부근에서 가장 유리하였다. 그리고 주사속도변화에 따른 조사에서 페놀 산화반응은 비가역적이고 확산이 이 반응을 지배한다.

  • Coastal concrete structure is harmed by physical and chemical action of sea water, impact load, meteorological effect and etc. especially, premature reinforcement corrosion in concrete exposed to sea water has an important problem. In this study, the behavior of chloride ions penetrated through the coastal concrete structure with ordinary portland cement or ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS) was modeled. The physicochemical processes including the diffusion of chloride and the chemical reaction of chloride ion with calcium silicate hydrate and the other constituents of hardened cement paste such as$C_3A$ and $C_4AF$were analyzed by using the Finite Element Method. From analysis result, the corrosion of concrete structure with GGBFS begins 1.69~1.76 times later than that of concrete structure with ordinary portland cement.

  • New coordination polymers of general form, $$[CoL_2X_2]_n$$ (L = 3,3'-oxybis(pyridine) (obp), 1,4-bis(3-pyri-doxy) benzene (bpob); X = Cl, NCS), have been prepared via a slow diffusion method. The reaction of the present linkers with cobalt(II) ion affords infinite 2-dimensional sheet products. For $[Co(obp) $_2Cl_2]_n$$, the local geometry of the cobalt center is an octahedral arrangement with four nitrogen donors and two chlorine ions in trans positions. $$[Co(bpob)_2(NCS)_2]_n$$ has provided a similar structure: the local geometry of the cobalt atom is an octahedral arrangement with four pyridine units and two NCS groups in transpositions. The obp and bpob linkers connect two cobalt(II) ions defining the edges of 40- and 60-membered $[Co(II)]_4$ ring, respectively. Thermal analyses of the coordination polymers show significant thermal behavior associated with the characteristic structures.
