  • The NOx emission characteristics of double-concentric diffusion flames and normal diffusion flames fueled with CH$_4$ were studied. Experimental and numerical investigations were carried out for double-concentric diffusion flame with varying central air flow rate and normal diffusion flame. The Emission indices of NOx(EINOx) were measured by chemiluminescent method and calculated by numerical model based on detailed chemistry. From the comparison between double-concentric diffusion flames and normal diffusion flames, the results show that EINOx of double-concentric diffusion flames are lower than normal diffusion flame, because of Prompt EINOx was decreased. EINOx of double-concentric diffusion flames increase with central air flow rate increasing.

  • Characteristics of carbon soot particles generated in diffusion flames were studied. Non-sooting and sooting normal diffusion flames using propane or ethylene as fuel were selected. In the flames, soot volume fraction was measured by a thermocouple, and primary particle diameter and cluster size were analyzed by TEM photographs. The characteristics of soot particles depended on flame(non-sooting or sooting) and fuel(propane or ethylene) type. Unlike the sooting diffusion flames, particle growth and oxidation processes were clearly observed in the non-sooting diffusion flames. In the sooting diffusion flames, soot particle size was slightly changed at the flame tip.

  • Direct numerical simulations(DNS) were performed for the prediction of transient buoyant jet diffusion flames where the Froude numbers(Fr) are 5 and 160, respectively. The thermodynamic and transport properties were evaluated using CHEMKIN package to enhance the prediction performance of the DNS code. The simulated buoyant jet diffusion flame of Fr=5 and 160 showed the transient, dynamic motion well. It was identified that the buoyant jet flames were flickered periodically, and the simulated flickering frequency of the jet diffusion flame of Fr=5 was 12.5Hz, which was in good agreement with the experimental results. The flamelet structures of the buoyant jet diffusion flames could be well understood by comparing the scalar dissipation rates(SDR) and the heat release rates(HRR) of the flames. It was found that the SDR was strongly coupled with the HRR in the buoyant jet diffusion flames.

  • The effect of temperature distributions on soot volume fraction in double-concentric diffusion flames have been investigated experimentally. Using fine thermocouple wires and a rapid insertion mechanism, we have measured temperature without the effect of soot particles attached to the thermocouple junction, which can lower the temperature signal about 100 K by increasing the heat loss from the junction by radiation. The temperature at the flame axis is higher in the double-concentric diffusion flames than in normal co-flow diffusion flames because of the inverse diffusion flame. However, it is almost the same as that at the periphery of normal flames, on which the inverse flame does not have an effect. Thus, the lower soot concentration found in the double-concentric diffusion flame can be explained by the effect of nitrogen diffusion from the central air jet.

  • Flame temperatures were measured and compared using a rapid insertion technique and a two-color pyrometry with Abel inversion process in co-flow ethylene diffusion flames. The measured line-of-sight temperature showed very limited usefulness in understanding the detailed soot formation/oxidation process in a co-flow diffusion flame. The flame temperatures could be measured with reasonable accuracy for the soot laden regions in ethylene diffusion flames using two-color pyrometry with an Abel inversion technique. Two-color-pyrometry with Abel inversion was demonstrated as a useful temperature measurement technique for co-flow diffusion flames, expecially under pressure conditions, where a thermocouple is not applicable. The soot volume fraction could be also obtained using tow-color pyrometry with Abel inversion, which provides important information for understanding the soot formation/oxidation mechanism in diffusion flames.

  • The present study deals with the unique characteristics of hydrogen jet diffusion flames, such as split flames and reignition phenomenon. The split flames are composed of a small flamelet on the nozzle rim and a lifted main flame at downstream. When mass flow rates of fuel reach a critical point, a small-sized flamelet is found to remain in the vicinity of the nozzle exit and the flame reignition subsequent to blowout of main flame occurs repeatedly. In this study, the non-luminous hydrogen jet diffusion flames are visualized by using schlieren technique in order to analyze the combustion characteristics of hydrogen jet diffusion flames with focus on the flame reignition phenomenon.

  • The lifted oscillating flame has been studied using experiments of inverse diffusion flames that the air jet injected into a methane background. To find out the characteristics of inverse diffusion flames, fundamentally flame stabilized diagram is investigated with various air and fuel jet velocities. It has five regions - flame extinction, stable attached flame, anchored flame, liftoff flame and blow off region. In inverse diffusion flame, lifted flames were observed near the blow off region. As long as flames lift off, flames oscillate by periods. In this oscillating lifted flame region, the frequency of 1 and under were observed in various air and methane jet velocities. Characteristics of lifted flames are also examined by using the ICCD direct image. And intensity of flame chemiluminescence is very different in rising and falling period from photographs. For the present, it is predicted that the changes of flame structure are related with flame oscillation, but more experiments will be needed to make clear the phenomenon.

  • A direct numerical simulation (DNS) was applied to nonpremixed counter-flow diffusion flames between oxidizer and fuel ducts. The objective of this study is to evaluate the numerical method for simulation of axisymmetric counterflow diffusion flames. Effects of computational domain size and grid size were scrutinized, and then the method was applied to air-methane diffusion flames. The results at zero gravity conditions were in good agreement with those obtained by the one-dimension flame code OPPDIF. It was confirmed thai the numerical method is applicable to the diffusion flames at the normal gravity conditions since the results clearly showed the effects of buoyancy and velocity ratio.

  • The temperature distribution in double-concentric diffusion flames have been investigated experimentally by rapid insertion technique. Using a fine thermocouple and rapid insertion mechanism, the temperature has been measured before soot particles attach the thermocouple junction which can affect the temperature signal by changing the radiation heat loss. For double-concentric diffusion flames, the temperature at the axis is higher than that of normal coflow diffusion flames because of the inverse diffusion flame at the center of the flame. However, it is almost same at the periphery on which the inverse flame does not have an effect.

  • Numerical study is conducted to grasp preferential diffusion effects on flame characteristics in $H_2/CO$ syn-gas diffusion flames diluted with $CO_2$. The models of Sun et al. and David et al., which have been well known to be best-fitted for $H_2/CO$ synthetic mixture flames. are evaluated for $H_2/CO$ synthetic mixture flames diluted with $CO_2$. Comparison of flame structures with mixture-averaged species diffusion and suppression of the diffusivities of $H_2$ and H was made. The behaviors of maximum flame temperatures with those species diffusion models are not explained by scalar dissipation rate but by the nature of chemical kinetics. Importantly-contributing reaction steps to heat release rate are also compared for the three species diffusion models in $H_2/CO/CO_2$ flames with and without $CO_2$ dilution.
