Sound Propagation over Multiple Wedges and Barriers

  • A theoretical formula that is based on the geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) is proposed for computing sound diffraction by multiple wedges, barriers, and polygonal-like shapes. The formula can treat both convex and concave edges, where edges mayor may not be inter-connected. Comparisons of theoretical predictions with other results done by the BEM or experiments for scaled model confirm the accuracy of the present formula. Numerical examples such as double wedges and doubly inclined barrier show that when there exist several diffraction paths for given source and receiver positions, the insertion loss is dominated by the diffraction associated with the shortest propagation path.

  • A SiO2/Si concave diffraction grating(period: 1.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) for the angular dispersive element of WDM was fabricated by sandwiching the SiO2/Si plane diffraction grating between a slab waveguide and a cylindrical concave block. Using this concave grating and input/output fiber, and wavelength division demultiplexer was composed. The demultiplexer has five channels, the insertion loss of 30dB, the wavelength spacing per channel of 7nm and crosstalk of-15dB.

A Study of Characteristic of Electrical-magnetic and Neutron Diffraction of Long-wire High-superconductor for Reducing Energy Losses

  • In this paper, AC losses of long wire Bi-2223 tapes with different twist pitch of superconducting core were fabricated, measured and analyzed. These samples produced by a powder-in-tube method are multi-filamentary tape with Ag matrix. Also, it's produced by non-twist. The critical current measurement was carried out under the environment in Liquid nitrogen and in zero field by 4-prob method. And the Magnetic measurement was carried out under the environment of applied time-varying transport current by transport method. From experiment, the susceptibility measurements were conducted while cooling in a magnetic field. Flux loss measurements were conducted as a function of ramping rate, frequency and field direction. The AC flux loss increases as the twist-pitch of the tapes decreased, in agreement with the Norris Equation. Neutron-diffraction measurements have been carried out investigate the crystal structure, magnetic structures, and magnetic phase transitions in Bi-2223([Bi, Pb]:Sr:Ca:Cu:O).

  • A holographic demultiplexer aimed at producing low polarization dependence loss using a long period volumetric diffraction grating inside photopolymer has been reported and experimentally demonstrated. To obtain the long period gratings, two kinds of gratings are recorded by angle of $4^{\circ}\;and\;6^{\circ}$ corresponding to the polarization dependence property of below 0.5 dB. From the experimental results, we demonstrate the 0.8 nm-spaced 21 channel holographic demultiplexer with the polarization dependence loss of less than -0.38 dB, the channel uniformity of 0.495 dB, and the channel crosstalk of -13 dB.

  • Knowledge of acoustic transmission loss of acoustic window material has a great importance for the sonar performance in ship. The purpose of this study was to investigate the measurement and analysis method for the acoustic transmission loss of the acoustic window materials for sonar dome. The measurement and analysis were carried out in water with GRP material. Transmission losses were calculated based on integrated direct and transmitted signals. The experimental setup enabled to vary the angle of incidence. Thus the transmission loss data could be expressed as the function of frequency and angle of rotation. In this paper, diffraction effect of incident angle, size of specimen with test material, transmission analysis method and multiple waves as incident acoustic signal were discussed.

유물 복원을 위한 실크 직물의 알칼리에 의한 열화 특성 연구 (A Study on the Alkaline Degradation Properties of Silk Fabrics for Costume Heritage Restoration)

  • Costume heritages of an excavated silk fabrics should be preserved without damage. In order to artificially restore the excavated silk fabrics, alkaline aqueous solution, as a simulated corpse, and two kinds of silk fabrics were used. Two kinds of silk fabrics were treated by aqueous alkaline solution according to strength retention value(100, 80, 60, 40, 20$\%$). The fine structure and physical properties of alkaline treated silk fabrics were investigated with various techniques such as wide-angle X-ray diffraction, tensile test, weight loss, shrinkage, SEM. and yellowness. As the alkaline treatment time increased tensile strength of silk fabrics decreased. However, weight loss and shrinkage slightly increased. The diffraction intensity of $\beta-form$ crystal declined and $\alpha-form$ crystal diffraction intensity disappeared with the treatment.

  • A new analytic method is presented for predicting the performance of noise barriers having complicated end shapes like "Y", "T", inverted L, and other shapes. The insertion loss of the barrier is predicted by summation of multiple diffractions occurring at the comer points. Although previous studies treated diffractions occurring only at the convex points, the method presented in this paper considers diffractions at the concave point. As numerical examples, a partially inclined noise barrier and "T" shape noise barrier are studied. It is shown that the diffraction at the concave point may be neglected if the shortest path does not include the concave comer point.

Effects of In Vitro Degradation on the Weight Loss and Tensile Properties of PLA/LPCL/HPCL Blend Fibers

  • PLA/LPCL/HPCL blend fibers composed of poly (lactic acid) (PLA), low molecular weight poly ($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (LPCL), and high molecular weight poly ($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (HPCL) were prepared by melt blending and spinning for bioab­sorbable filament sutures. The effects of blending time and blend composition on the X-ray diffraction patterns and tensile properties of PLA/LPCL/HPCL blend fibers were characterized by WAXD and UTM. In addition, the effect of in vitro degra­dation on the weight loss and tensile properties of the blend fibers hydrolyzed during immersion in a phosphate buffer solu­tion at pH 7.4 and 37$^{\circ}C$ for 1-8 weeks was investigated. The peak intensities of PLA/LPCL/HPCL blend fibers in X-ray diffraction patterns decreased with an increase of blending time and LPCL contents in the blend fibers. The weight loss of PLA/LPCL/HPCL blend fibers increased with an increase of blending time, LPCL contents, and hydrolysis time while the tensile strength and modulus of the blend fibers decreased. The tensile strength and modulus of the blend fibers were also found to be increased with an increase of HPCL contents in the blend fibers. The optimum conditions to prepare PLA/LPCL/HPCL blend fibers for bioabsorbable sutures are LPCL contents of $5 wt\%, HPCL contents of $35 wt\%, and blending time of 30 min. The strength retention of the PLA/LPCL/HPCL blend fiber prepared under optimum conditions was about $93.5\% even at hydrolysis time of 2 weeks.

목재의 탄화기구 해석(II) (Investigation of Carbonization Mechanism of Wood (II))

  • 굴참나무 목재를 $310{\sim}350^{\circ}C$의 온도조건에서 탄화하여 탄화목재의 해부학적 특성, 중량감소율 및 체적변화를 조사하였다. 그 결과, 시료의 부피는 탄화온도가 높아질수록 감소하였고, 방사 방향으로 할렬이 발생하였다. 중량감소율은 탄화온도가 높아질수록 증가하였으며, 특히 탄화온도 $330{\sim}340^{\circ}C$에서 급격한 중량감소율을 보여주었다. 도관직경의 수축은 접선방향이 방사방향보다 높게 나타났다. SEM관찰에서 탄화온도가 $320^{\circ}C$ 이하의 경우, 목재 세포벽의 벽층구조를 확인할 수 있었지만, $330^{\circ}C$ 이상에서는 세포벽층이 매끄러운 비결정성 형태를 보여주었다. X선회절 결과, 탄화온도 $340^{\circ}C$까지는 목재 셀룰로오스의 결정구조가 남아있었으나, $350^{\circ}C$ 이상에서는 비결정성 구조로 변화된 것이 관찰되었다. 따라서, 목재성분이 탄소로 변화하는 탄화온도는 $350^{\circ}C$ 부근으로 생각되었다.
