An analytic axial xenon oscillation model was developed for pressurized water reactor analysis. The model employs an equation system for axial difference parameters that was derived from the two-group one-dimensional diffusion equation with control rod modeling and coupled with xenon and iodine balance equations. The spatial distributions of nu, xenon, and iodine were expanded by the Fourier sine series, resulting in cancellation of the flux-xenon coupled non-linearity. An inhomogeneous differential equation system for the axial difference parameters, which gives the relationship between power, iodine and xenon axial differences in the case of control rod movement, was derived and solved analytically. The analytic solution of the axial difference parameters can directly provide with the variation of axial power difference during xenon oscillation. The accuracy of the model is verified by benchmark calculations with one-dimensional reference core calculations.
This paper deals with numerical treatment of singularly perturbed differential equations involving small delays. The highest order derivative in the equation is multiplied by a perturbation parameter 𝜀 taking arbitrary values in the interval (0, 1]. For small 𝜀, the problem involves a boundary layer of width O(𝜀), where the solution changes by a finite value, while its derivative grows unboundedly as 𝜀 tends to zero. The considered problem contains delay on the convection and reaction terms. The terms with the delays are approximated using Taylor series approximations resulting to asymptotically equivalent singularly perturbed BVPs. Inducing exponential fitting factor for the term containing the singular perturbation parameter and using central finite difference for the derivative terms, numerical scheme is developed. The stability and uniform convergence of difference schemes are studied. Using a priori estimates we show the convergence of the scheme in maximum norm. The scheme converges with second order of convergence for the case 𝜀 = O(N-1) and for the case 𝜀 ≪ N-1, the scheme converge uniformly with first order of convergence, where N is number of mesh intervals in the domain discretization. We compare the accuracy of the developed scheme with the results in the literature. It is found that the proposed scheme gives accurate result than the one in the literatures.
We model the torsional oscillation of a suspension bridge, which is the forced sine-Cordon equation on a bounded domain. We use finite difference method to solve nonlinear partial differential equation numerically. The partial differential equation has multiple periodic solutions. Whether the span oscillates with small or large amplitude depends oかy on its initial displacement and velocity. Moreover, we observe that the qualitative properties are consistent with the behavior observed at the Tacoma Narrows Bridge on the day of its collapse.
This study is concerned with development of 3-Dimensional simulator of a biped robot that has a prismatic balancing weight or a revolute balancing weight. The dynamic stability equation of a biped robot which have a prismatic balancing weight is conditional linear but a walking robot's stability equation with a revolute balancing weight is nonlinear. To get a stable gait of a biped robot, stabilization equations with ZMP (Zero Moment Point) are modeled as non-homogeneous second order differential equations for each balancing weight type. A trajectory of balancing weight can be directly calculated with the FDM (Finite Difference Method) solution of the linearized differential equation. In this paper, the 3-Dimensional graphic simulator is programmed to get and calculate the desired ZMP and the actual ZMP. Walking of 4 steps was simulated and verified. This balancing system will be applied to a biped humanoid robot, which consist Begs and upper body, at future work.
In this article, we present a numerical scheme for solving singularly perturbed (i.e. highest -order derivative term multiplied by small parameter) Burgers-Huxley equation with appropriate initial and boundary conditions. Most of the traditional methods fail to capture the effect of layer behavior when small parameter tends to zero. The presence of perturbation parameter and nonlinearity in the problem leads to severe difficulties in the solution approximation. To overcome such difficulties the present numerical scheme is constructed. In construction of the numerical scheme, the first step is the dicretization of the time variable using forward difference formula with constant step length. Then, the resulting non linear singularly perturbed semidiscrete problem is linearized using quasi-linearization process. Finally, differential quadrature method is used for space discretization. The error estimate and convergence of the numerical scheme is discussed. A set of numerical experiment is carried out in support of the developed scheme.

Transient magnetic diffusion process in a melt-cast BSCCO-2212 tube is analyzed by an analytical method. The transient diffusion equation is transformed into an ordinary differential equation by integral method. The penetration depth of magnetic field into a superconducting tube is obtained by solving the differential equation numerically. The results show that the penetration depth as a function of time which is somewhat different from the results by Bean's critical current model. The reason of the difference between the present results and that of Bean's model is discussed and compared in this paper.

Galerkin's finite element method is applied to a two-dimensional heat convection-diffusion problem arising in the hydrodynamic lubrication of thrust bearings used in naval vessels. A parabolized thermal energy equation for the lubricant, and thermal diffusion equations for both bearing pad and the collar are treated together, with proper juncture conditions on the interface boundaries. it has been known that a numerical instability arises when the classical Galerkin's method, which is equivalent to a centered difference approximation, is applied to a parabolic-type partial differential equation. Probably the simplest remedy for this instability is to use a one-sided finite difference formula for the first derivative term in the finite difference method. However, in the present coupled heat convection-diffusion problem in which the governing equation is parabolized in a subdomain(Lubricant), uniformly stable numerical solutions for a wide range of the Peclet number are obtained in the numerical test based on Galerkin's classical finite element method. In the present numerical convergence errors in several error norms are presented in the first model problem. Additional numerical results for a more realistic bearing lubrication problem are presented for a second numerical model.

A numerical solution using finite difference method to evaluate the thermal buckling of simply supported FGM plate with variable thickness is presented in this research. First, the governing differential equation of thermal stability under uniform temperature through the plate thickness is derived. Then, the governing equation has been solved using finite difference method. After validating the presented numerical method with the analytical solution, the finite difference formulation has been extended in order to include variable thickness. The accuracy of the finite difference method for variable thickness plate has been also compared with the literature where a good agreement has been found. Furthermore, a parametric study has been conducted to analyze the effect of material and geometric parameters on the thermal buckling resistance of the FGM plates. It was found that the thickness variation affects isotropic plates a bit more than FGM plates.
A computational method for solving singularly perturbed boundary value problem of differential equation with shift arguments of mixed type is presented. When shift arguments are sufficiently small (o(ε)), most of the existing method in the literature used Taylor's expansion to approximate the shift term. This procedure may lead to a bad approximation when the delay argument is of O(ε). The main idea for this work is to deal with constant shift arguments, which are independent of ε. In the present method, we construct the formally asymptotic solution of the problem using the method of composite expansion. The reduced problem is solved numerically by using operator compact implicit method, and the second problem is solved analytically. Error estimate is derived by using the maximum norm. Numerical examples are provided to support the theoretical results and to show the efficiency of the proposed method.
In this paper, numerical treatment of singularly perturbed parabolic delay differential equations is considered. The considered problem have small delay on the spatial variable of the reaction term. To treat the delay term, Taylor series approximation is applied. The resulting singularly perturbed parabolic PDEs is solved using Crank Nicolson method in temporal direction with non-standard finite difference method in spatial direction. A detail stability and convergence analysis of the scheme is given. We proved the uniform convergence of the scheme with order of convergence O(N-1 + (∆t)2), where N is the number of mesh points in spatial discretization and ∆t is mesh length in temporal discretization. Two test examples are used to validate the theoretical results of the scheme.
