  • In this paper, absolute and differential eddy current signals from various defects in the steam generator tube are numerically predicted and their signal slope characteristics are investigated. The signal changes due to frequency increase are also observed. After studying signal patterns from various defects and frequencies, the analysis of mixed defect signals affected by the presence of a ferromagnetic support plate is attempted. For the signal prediction, axisymmetric finite element modeling is used and this leads us to the slope angle analysis of the signal. Results show that differential signals are useful for locating the position of a defect under the support plate, while absolute signals are easy to presume and interpret even though the effect of support plate is mixed. Combined use of these two types of signals will help us accomplish a more reliable inspection.

  • Predicting precise specifications of differential mixed-signal circuits is a difficult problem, because analytically derived correlation between process variations and conventional specifications exhibits the limited prediction accuracy due to the phase unbalance, for most self-tests. This paper proposes an efficient prediction technique to provide accurate specifications of differential mixed-signal circuits in a system-on-chip (SoC) based on a nonlinear statistical nonlinear regression technique. A spectrally pure sinusoidal signal is applied to a differential DUT, and its output is fed into another differential DUT through a weighting circuitry in the loopback configuration. The weighting circuitry, which is employed from the previous work [3], efficiently produces different weights on the harmonics of the loopback responses, i.e., the signatures. The correlation models, which map the signatures to the conventional specifications, are built based on the statistical nonlinear regression technique, in order to predict accurate nonlinearities of individual DUTs. In production testing, once the efficient signatures are measured, and plugged into the obtained correlation models, the harmonic coefficients of DUTs are readily identified. This work provides a practical test solution to overcome the serious test issue of differential mixed-signal circuits; the low accuracy of analytically derived model is much lower by the errors from the unbalance. Hardware measurement results showed less than 1.0 dB of the prediction error, validating that this approach can be used as production test.

  • In this paper, impedance analysis of a differential pall having 2 drop configuration is performed using the reflection theory and verified by circuit simulator (Ansoft designer). Through the impedance analysis, it was possible to understand the signal transmission at a differential pall, and an optimized 2 drop design technique of a differential pair could be developed. When compared with the conventional design, the proposed design shows a good signal integrity and has much less design restrictions.

  • This paper describes a percentage current differential relaying algorithm for bus protection blocked by a CT saturation detection algorithm. The detection algorithm blocks the output of a current differential relay only if a differential current is caused by CT saturation in the case of an external fault. Moreover, if a current differential relay operates faster than the detection algorithm, the blocking signal is not ignited. On the other hand. if the detection algorithm operates faster than a current differential relay, the output of the relay is blocked. The results of the simulation show that the proposed algorithm can discriminate internal faults from external faults ever when a CT is saturated in both cases. This paper concludes by implementing the algorithm into the TMS320C6701 digital signal processor. The results of hardware implementation are also satisfactory The algorithm can not only increase the sensitivity of the current differential relay but Improve the stability of the relay for an external faults.

  • In this paper, we investigated the signal-to-noise ratio improvement in a differential detector, which is a function of the optical noise coupling ratio and the differential gain ratio. A differential detector consists of two photodiodes and a differential amplifier. The differential detector reduced the noise component and improved the signal-to-noise ratio by about 20 dB when the differential gain ratio equals to the optical noise coupling ratio. The differential detector is very effective in removing the environmental optical noise or interference from an adjacent optical channel. This method is also effective when the noise wavelength is similar to the signal.

  • In this work, signal transmission properties of SATA connector have been improved using its differential impedance calculation and its design revision to closer impedance matching. Using 3 dimensional electromagnetic field simulator, the differential mode S-parameter was calculated to investigate its signal fidelity. The differential impedance is calculated from the equation of the odd mode impedance with inductance, capacitance, mutual inductance, and mutual capacitance. The differential impedance of SATA connector was calculated to be $107.3{\Omega}$ and did not meet the design specification with $100{\Omega}{\pm}5%$. In order to achieve its impedance range and improve its signal transmission properties, SATA connector's design has been revised with two different directions and analyzed through the calculation of differential impedance, differential reflection loss, and differential insertion loss.

  • A new demodulation scheeme for differentially encoded GMSK signal is introduced and described. In the proposed differential detection method, the signal is sampled at the center of the time slot, at which the effect of the intersymbol interference is relatively smaller than the edge of the time slot. The proposed differential detector takes this adbantate. The error rate performance of the differential detector has been numerically calculated in the fast fading encountered in the land mobile radio channels. A comparison of performance with the differential detector for MSK signal is given. Finally the possibility of improving performance employing nonredudant error correction is studied.

  • An instantaneous amplitude (IA) estimator using the symmetric higher order differential energy operator is proposed. The amplitude estimator and the instantaneous frequency (IF) estimator based on the symmetric higher order differential energy operator coincide with the analyzed signal in time, and they show better estimation results than the IA and IF based on the higher order differential energy operator. Various IF and IA estimators are applied to AM-FM signals for the performance comparison. Among the IF and IA estimators, the IF and IA estimators based on the symmetric higher order energy operator show the best estimation accuracy. Then, the IA and IF estimators are applied to the distorted power line signal to show their usefulness as power disturbance detectors.

  • To get accurate information about the defect from the test signal, NDT engineers should have a good knowledge on forward problems. Such knowledge is usually obtained by a lot of testing experiences. Another why of obtaining such knowledge is to build a database containing lots of defect information and their corresponding signals. However, the archiving of raw test data would require a lot of storage space. In this paper, an economic way of storing signals is studied by using Fourier descriptors. Instead of saving raw signal data, Fourier descriptors are saved and the storage spare is reduced. Of course, the defect signal can be reconstructed from the stored descriptors. By using differential ECT signals produced by numerical modeling and experiment, the savings of 85% from the original signal and $57{\sim}65%$ from the filtered signal in the storage space were confirmed. The similarity of the reconstructed signal and the original signal was also demonstrated. This Fourier descriptor approach could contribute significantly in building differential signal databases.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a signal process circuit for a position sensitive avalanche photodiode detector. The circuit parts consisted of amplification, differential and peak/hold circuit. This research was the baseline to develop highly compact radiation detector. The signal was amplified by an amplification chip and its shape was changed in a differential circuit to minimize the pulse tailing. The peak/hold circuit detect the peak of the signal from the differential circuit and hold the amplitude of the peak for data acquisition. In order to test the intrinsic function of the circuit, the input signal was transmitted from a commercial pulse generator.
