  • This study was conducted to estimate the genetic improvements by selection criteria using the genetic parameters and breeding values for population of abalone Haliotis discus hannai. Genetic parameters and breeding values were estimated using all measurement data of growth traits (shell length, shell width and total weight) at 18 and 30 months old after artificial fertilization for 3,029 individuals produced in April 2014. Growth traits all exhibited moderate heritability (0.253-0.354). So it is considered that family selection will be more advantageous than individual selection. It was found that a higher genetic improvement could be expected when selecting the top 10% based on the breeding values of total weight rather than other traits. In particular, a higher genetic improvement could be expected when selecting the top 10% at 30 months old than 18 months old after artificial fertilization. This seems to be because the selection differential and heritability were higher at the 30 months old. Therefore, by estimating genetic parameters and breeding values of a population for production of the next generations by stage of growth, if they are used properly in selection and mating according to the improvement direction, it is considered that more breeding effects can be expected.

  • CR(Cognitive Radio) technology is maximized frequency reuse using unused frequency band. Conventional cooperative spectrum sensing has fixed false alarms. so all cooperative user has equal threshold. This problem is caused degradation of detection probability. so we propose and analysis the system model that false alarm differential setting through CSI(channel state information) for resonable threshold. Simulation results show improvement of detection probability.

  • For stator winding protection of AC generator, KCL(Kirchhoff's Current Law) is widely applied. Actually a CRDR(Current Ratio Differential Relay) based on DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) has been used for protecting generator. It has been pointed out that defects can occur during the process of transforming a time domain signal into a frequency domain one which can lead to loss of time domain information. Wavelets techniques are proposed for the analysis of power system transients. This paper introduces an algorithm to choose a suitable Mother Wave1et for generator stator fault detection. For optimal selection, we analyzed db(Daubechies), sym(Symlets), and coif(Coiflects) of Mother Wavelet. And we compared with performance of the choice algorithm using detail coefficients energy and RMS(root mean square) error. It can be improved the reliability of the conventional DFT based CRDR. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme is proved with simulation using collected data obtained from ATP (Alternative Transient Program) package.

  • It is necessary for developing countries to increase their consolidation of domestic technology in order to improve their economy. In order to raise their techniques, they have to try to induce the advanced know-how from other countries in spite of heavy cost. The object of this study is to establish the model on which we base our choice of the proper techniques or plants and give priority to them by using quantified selection criteria. The method in this study has two stages, and the writer has selected 12 factors affecting the decision making for the importation of technology from the industrially advanced countries. First, the lists of valuable know-how for the better development of national industry should be determined, and for the formulation and arrangement of the lists, a council of specialists which uses questionnaires in terms of the Semantic Differential Method, should be organized. Second, for the assignments of priority to the prospective items for importation, the writer has imployed both the Leontief Model and the Disman Model as objective methods and Mottley-Newton method, one of the R&D Project Selection Methods, as a general model. The writer has applied the methods described above to the fields of petrochemical industry in Korea.

  • Early results from a field trail of Agathis loranthifolia are reported from a progeny test of 100 open-pollinated families in west Java, Indonesia. The average of height and diameter at root collar (DRC) was 40.18 cm and 0.52 cm at age 15 months. Family survival rate ranged from 86.5% at age 10 months to 81.7% at age 15 months. Family means of 10 best and 10 poorest families for each trait indicated that there was a large difference of growth performances among individual families. For height and DRC growth, the poorest groups had averages of 33.98 cm and 0.43 mm while the averages of the best groups were 47.35 cm and 0.62 mm at age 15 months as a difference of 39.36% and 43.65%, respectively. Differences between the best group and the test population mean, which is the selection differential, were implying that genetic gain from selection for the improvement of height and DRC growth would be achieved. The family variances of DRC and height were relatively small compared to replicate and residual variances. Family heritabilities for both studied traits were fluctuated, and the genetic coefficients of variation for DRC and height at age of 15 months were 7.19% and 5.22%, respectively.

  • In 2001, we conducted a study to assess the effects of differential arrival times and nest-site selection on reproductive performance in a mixed-species heronry consisting of six species in Taeseong-ri, Chungbuk, Korea. We recorded the arrival dates, nest heights, clutch sizes, and brood sizes after 15-20 days of the age of the birds' chicks. The grey herons and cattle egrets arrived first and last, respectively, on the colony site. In the homogenous vegetation structure of the breeding site, the pitch pine trees (Pinus rigida) were mainly used for building nests on 48 of the 50 pine trees (96%). The breeding species vertically stratifies the nest sites according to their body size, except for the cattle egrets and black-crowned night herons that nested at sites higher than those predicted from their body size. The mean nest success rates of the six species under study were positively correlated with the mean nest heights. Our findings suggest that aggressive interspecific interactions among neighbors influence nest-site selection to enhance breeding success.

  • Fluorescent differential display (FDD) is a method for identifying differentially expressed genes in eukaryotic cells. The mRNA FDD technology works by systematic amplification of the 3' terminal regions of mRNAs. This method involve the reverse transcription using anchored primers designed to bind 5'boundary of the poly A tails, followed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification with additional upstream primers of arbitrary sequences. The amplified cDNA subpopulations are separated by denaturing polyacrylamide electrophoresis. To identify the genes involved in the development of first trap leaf, we applied a FDD method using mRNAs from leaf base, first trap leaf and flower tissue, respectively. We screened several genes that expressed specifically in first trap leaf. Nucleotide sequence analysis of these genes revealed that these were protease inhibitor (PI), myo-inositol-1-phosphate synthase and lipocalin-type prostaglandin D synthase. Northern blot analysis showed that these genes were expressed specifically in first trap leaf (in vivo and in vitro). FDD could prove to be useful for simultaneous scanning of transcripts from multiple cDNA samples and faster selection of differentially expressed transcripts of interest.

  • The selection of meaningful clinical tests and its reference values from a high-dimensional clinical data with imbalanced class distribution, one class is represented by a large number of examples while the other is represented by only a few, is an important issue for differential diagnosis between similar diseases, but difficult. For this purpose, this study introduces methods based on the concepts of both discernibility matrix and function in rough set theory (RST) with two discretization approaches, equal width and frequency discretization. Here these discretization approaches are used to define the reference values for clinical tests, and the discernibility matrix and function are used to extract a subset of significant clinical tests from the translated nominal attribute values. To show its applicability in the differential diagnosis problem, we have applied it to extract the significant clinical tests and its reference values between normal (N = 351) and abnormal group (N = 101) with either cholecystitis or cholelithiasis disease. In addition, we investigated not only the selected significant clinical tests and the variations of its reference values, but also the average predictive accuracies on four evaluation criteria, i.e., accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and geometric mean, during l0-fold cross validation. From the experimental results, we confirmed that two discretization approaches based rough set approximation methods with relative frequency give better results than those with absolute frequency, in the evaluation criteria (i.e., average geometric mean). Thus it shows that the prediction model using relative frequency can be used effectively in classification and prediction problems of the clinical data with imbalanced class distribution.
