  • Intensive selection for muscle development and against fat deposition in pigs during the last 50 years has contributed to the increased incidence of porcine stress syndrome (PSS) and pale soft exudative pork (PSE). Genetics, nutrition and management, preslaughter animal handling, stunning, dehairing and carcass chilling influence the incidence and magnitude of the PSE condition. The normal incidence of PSE has been reported to range from 10 to 30%, but in some isolated instances is up to 60%. The elimination of halothane-positive pigs in breeding programs has reduced PSS and PSE. Further improvements in meat quality by terminal sire evaluation and selection can be achieved within halothane-negative populations because around 20% of the variation in meat color and water binding capacity seems to be genetically related. Pre-slaughter handling on the farm, during transit to the packing plant and at the packing plant can greatly influence the meat quality, contributing 10 to 25% of the variation. An effective stunning method, skinning instead of scalding/dehairing and rapid post-slaughter chilling further reduce the incidence of PSE pork. In addition to proper care and handling a carcass-merit based marketing system, that reflected the value differential between desirable and undesirable meat quality in the pricing system for pigs, would provide a great incentive to change pork production systems in order to improve meat quality, thus improving the image and usefulness of pork as food.

  • Myositis ossificans (MO) is a benign condition of non-neoplastic heterotopic bone formation in the muscle or soft tissue. Trauma plays a role in the development of MO, thus, non-traumatic MO is very rare. Although MO may occur anywhere in the body, it is rarely seen in the lumbosacral paravertebral muscle (PVM). Herein, we report a case of non-traumatic MO in the lumbosacral PVM. A 42-year-old man with no history of trauma was referred to our hospital for pain in the low back, left buttock, and left thigh. On physical examination, a slightly tender, hard, and fixed mass was palpated in the left lumbosacral PVM. Computed tomography showed a calcified mass within the left lumbosacral PVM. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed heterogeneous high signal intensity in T1- and T2-weighted image, and no enhancement of the mass was found in the postcontrast T1-weighted MRI. The lack of typical imaging features required an open biopsy, and MO was confirmed. MO should be considered in the differential diagnosis when the imaging findings show a mass involving PVM. When it is difficult to distinguish MO from soft tissue or bone malignancy by radiology, it is necessary to perform a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate factors and variables which have significant effects on visual preference of urban stream in Taejon city and to suggest design & management information for urban stream. These works consist of two phases. First, we tested the Hyechon college students' visual preference for 36 spots of urban stream slide and then selected 10 spots slide by the Sturges' formula. Second, we analyzed factors and variables of visual preference of urban stream using the semantic differential scale method and then processed using descriptive analysis, factor analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. The difference of landscape adjectives between the highest score of visual preference slide (No.10) and the lowest score of visual preference slide (No.2) was cleanness. 2. Three factors, the nature, the cleanness and the movement, were derived from the factor analysis. 3. Factors covering the visual preference of urban stream have been found to be the landscape of urban stream, the nature, the cleanness, and the movement. The visual preference factors of urban stream need to be considered in creating or restoring the ecological urban stream landscape.

  • Kikuchi's disease is a self-limiting benign disease characterized by cervical lymphadenopathy, but it can be mistaken for malignant disease, and when involved lymph nodes are unusually located, diagnosis can be more difficult. The authors report the case of a 19-year-old man with Kikuchi's disease, who had isolated intra-abdominal lymphadenopathy and increased 18-fluoro-deoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT). Although its incidence is extremely rare, intra-abdominal Kikuchi's disease with increased FDG uptake in PET-CT image should be considered in the differential diagnosis when constitutional symptoms mimic those of malignant lymphoma.

  • This study is an attempt to examine fashion elements appearing in the cover-page design of fashion magazines published in Korea and aims to find Korea#s own fashion identity in fashion styling and designing of those fashion magazines. In order to do so, the study reviewed the related literature and analyzed the issues of Vogue and Harper#s Bazaar magazines published between 2004 and 2006. The results of the study can be summarized as follows: In case of fashion photographs, the largest number of 72 sampled cover-model photographs is in approximately three-quarter cut size. For the items, most take the form of one-piece dress and feature the use of a variety of accessories. In case of dresses, most are the creations of foreign designers and famous fashion models or celebrities show up, mostly alone, as features on the cover pages. Because of the nature of fashion magazines, their primary emphasis is put on the dress among other things, but on the other hand some of those magazines have differential cover pages where the model#s face is highlighted with the look of makeup or a famous female actress stands out. However, the fashion in designing the cover pages of magazines is, rather than to show the dress itself, to create a new combination of different elements as total fashion or convey an image based on such a fashion style.

  • The H.263 Annex I method for the intraframe coding is based on the prediction in DCT domain, unlike JPEG, MPEG-1, and MPEG-2 where the intraframe coding uses block DCT, independent of the neighboring blocks. In this paper, we show the ineffectiveness of H.263 Annex I prediction method by mathematically deriving the spatial domain meaning of H.263 Annex I prediction method. Based on the derivation, we propose a prediction method which is based on the spatial correlation property of image signals. From the experiment and derivation, we verified the proposed method.

  • Grounding line of a glacier or ice shelf where ice bottom meets the ocean is sensitive to changes in the polar environment. Recent rapid changes of grounding lines have been observed especially in southwestern Antarctica due to global warming. In this study, ERS-1/2 and Sentinel-1A Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image were interferometrically acquired in 1996 and 2015, respectively, to monitor the movement of the grounding line in the western part of Ronne Ice Shelf near the Antarctic peninsula. Double-Differential Interferometric SAR (DDInSAR) technique was applied to remove gravitational flow signal to detect grounding line from the interferometric phase due to the vertical displacement of the tide. The result showed that ERS-1/2 grounding lines are almost consistent with those from Rignot et al. (2011) which used the similar dataset, confirming the credibility of the data processing. The comparison of ERS-1/2 and Sentinle-1A DDInSAR images showed a grounding line retreat of $1.0{\pm}0.1km$ from 1996 to 2015. It is also proved that the grounding lines based on the 2004 MODIS Mosaic of Antarctica (MOA) images and digital elevation model searching for ice plain near coastal area (Scambos et al., 2017), is not accurate enough especially where there is a ice plain with no tidal motion.

  • We describe the design and the implementation of video-rate reflection confocal scanning microscopy (CSM) using an acousto-optical deflector (AOD) for the fast horizontal scan and a galvanometer mirror (GM) for the slow vertical scan. Design parameters of the optical system are determined for optimal resolution and contrast. The OSLO simulations show that the performances of CSM are not changed with deflection angle and the wavefront errors of the system are less than 0.012λ. To evaluate the performances of designed CSM, we do a series of tests, measuring lateral and axial resolution, real time image acquisition. Due to a higher axial resolution compared with conventional microscopy, CSM can detect the surface of sub-micrometer features. We detect 138㎚ line shape pattern with a video-rate (30 frm/sec). And 10㎚ axial resolution is archived. The lateral resolution of the topographic images will be further enhanced by differential confocal microscopy (DCM) method and computational algorithms.

  • A continuous solution of the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the heat equation $u_t$$a2u_{xx}$ using a fuzzy system is described. We first apply the Crank-Nicolson method to obtain a discrete solution at the grid points for the heat equation. Then we find a continuous function to represent approximately the discrete values at the grid points in the form of a bicubic spline function (equation omitted) that can in turn be represented exactly by a fuzzy system. We show that the computed values at non-grid points using the bicubic spline function is much smaller than the ones obtained by linear interpolations of the values at the grid points. We also show that the fuzzy rule table in the fuzzy system representation of the bicubic spline function can be viewed as a gray scale image. Hence, the fuzzy rules provide a visual representation of the functions of two variables where the contours of different levels for the function are shown in different gray scale levels
