A field pilot study on remediation of diesel-contaminated soil by hot air injection/extraction process constructing soil piling system was conducted to evaluate the effects of hot air on the removal of diesel and each constituent. After the heating process of 2 months, the equilibrium temperature of soil reached to 10$0^{\circ}C$ and soil TPH concentration was reduced to about 72% against the initial concentration. Additional extraction process of 2 months induced the continuous extraction of residual diesel and the increment of microbial activity, which made soil TPH concentration reduced to 95%. In addition biological removal of non volatile constituents in diesel was verified indirectly and the removal pattern of each DRO(diesel range organic) as soil temperature was explained.

TPH degrdation patterns in diesel contaminated soil was investigated with microwave radiation. When microwave radiation on the soil was applied, temperature increment of the aridic soil was quite low, but temperature in the moist soil was dramatically increased even if short period of running time. Up to 20% of the moisture content, the higher moisture content has more increment of temperature, whereas over 20% of the moisture content, temperature in the soil was rather decreased. when 100~700 W power of microwave radiation was applied into the contaminated soil, a lot of TPH removals was observed under 300 W, but negligible increment of TPH removal was detected over 300 W. 60% of TPH removal was achieved with initial 20% moisture content and microwave radiation. Additional 25% removal was accomplished when moisture content was kept constant during radiation period. It indicated that maintaining of constant moisture is an important factor for TPH removal with microwave radiation because moisture and temperature in the soil are decreased with reaction time.

The effects of compost amendment on the removal of petroleum hydrocarbons and the activities of microorganisms in soil ecosystem have been studied in bioremediation of diesel contaminated soil. The relation between biological activities and removal of petroleun hydrocarbon was determined by ATP(Adenisine Triphosphate), n-alkanes and TPH concentration analysis. After 80 days of bioremediation, the removal of TPH in soil amended with compost increased more than 10% compared with control soil which was tilled in the same condition without compost addition. The biodegradations of n-alkanes having 12 to 20 moles of carbon were distinctive. As the soil was contaminated with more diesel, the ATP has decreased rapidly. When the TPH amounted to 80,000 mg diesel/kg, the ATP decreased to 4 ng/g from initial concentration of 65 ng/g. While the ATP in the compost amended soil increased to 112 ng/g after tilling for 6 days, the ATP in the control increased to merely 36 ng/g after tilling for 14 days. Also while the control soil showed a lag time in ATP increase, the compost amended soil did not show that but showed a rapid ATP increase within a short time. The patterns of changes in ATP concentration were similar to those in daily removals of TPH with time difference of about 7 days.
The cells obtained from diesel contaminated site were tested for diesel degradation by culturing them on the culture medium that contained diesel as the only carbon source. Two strains that grew well in the culture media were separated: one formed white colony and another strain formed yellow colony. When they were cultured together, much higher diesel degradation was obtained compares to that of individual cell culture. Mixed culture of white and yellow colony forming strains grew well with 1%(v/v) diesel and the addition of growth nutrients increased the diesel degradation. Additional nitrogen source was efficient for higher diesel degradation (over 90%) when it was compared with that without nitrogen source. When mixed culture of white and yellow colony forming cells were applied to the soil column system contaminated by diesel, 30 mL/min of air flow rate was found to be sufficient to degrade diesel oil. The diesel degradation did not increase noticeably at higher flow rate. The addition of nitrogen source resulted in the increase in diesel degradability.
In the past several years phytoremediation, defined as the use of plants for removing contaminants from media such as soils or water, has attracted a great deal of interest as a potentially useful remediation technology We attempted to assess the effectiveness of phytoremediation of diesel-contaminated soils in a green house. Screening test for selecting an appropriate plant was performed by observing the harmful effects of diesel dosage on the growth of 4 plants. Alfalfa was selected as a potentially useful plant among corn and barnyard grasses due to its high tolerance to the toxicity of diesel in growth. Bioremediation of the artificial diesel-contaminated soil packed in the PVC columns(0.3m in diameter $\times$ 1m in length) with air supplied, alfalfa planted, and alfalfa and air supplied was investigated for 100 days. The results of the column test showed plant effects on enhancing the biodegradation of diesel in the contaminated soils compared to the control column which had no plant. Injecting air to the columns during phytoremediation also showed additional effects on the removal rate of diesel. Comparison of microbial activity in each test column showed a beneficial effect of plants in the soil remediation processes. This results can be explained microbial activity in rhizosphere is a crucial factor for removing diesel.

In this paper, removal of diesel hydrocarbons (C$_{10}$-C$_{22}$) for dry and moist soil was investigated so that microwave-enhanced soil vapor extraction(SVE) reduced soil treatment time and raised remediation efficiency. Kinetic constants of diesel hydrocarbons with microwave energy were 7 times on dry soil and 1580 times on moist soil as much as those of SVE process without microwave energy. The diesel removals were 67.7~78.4% for $C_{10}$ and $C_{12}$, and 0~18.5% for $C_{14}$~C$_{22}$ for dry and moist soil with SVE process only. On the other hand, dry soil with microwave-enhanced SVE process showed 89.3~99.4% removal for $C_{10}$ and $C_{12}$ and 35.6~67.0% for hydrocarbons over $C_{14}$. All hydrocarbons(C$_{10}$~C$_{22}$) studied were significantly removed (93.6~99.8%) for moist soil with microwave-enhanced SVE process. Almost all diesel hydrocarbons were usually considered as semi-volatile compounds(SVOCs). Microwave-enhanced SVE process might have a great potential for remediation of soils contaminated with SVOCs.OCs.
A cold mix asphalt (CMA) treatment process was proposed as a tool to recycle soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. Experimental studies were conducted to characterize performances of the CMA process in treating soils contaminated with diesel or diesel compounds. From the screening experiments, it was found that performances of five types of asphalt emulsions that contained a cationic or an anionic or a nonionic surfactant were not substantially different. In consideration of higher affinity for soils and higher sorption coefficients obtained, an emulsion containing Lauryl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride (LDBAC) was selected as a promising asphalt emulsion for treating diesel-contaminated soils. When the asphalt emulsion LDBAC was applied to treat three compounds that originated from diesel, the removal efficiencies obtained in the order of decreasing efficiencies were as follows: docosane > pentadecane > undecane. Leaching experiments on the specimen formulated by the emulsion LDBAC found that the selected treatment method could treat soils with diesel concentrations as high as 10,000 mg/kg. Leaching of the diesel from the specimen was controlled by diffusion for the first four days and then leaching rate diminished substantially. The latter behavior was characterized as depletion, which represents that the contaminant released amounts to more than $50\%$ of the total amount of the contaminant that can be leached. The amounts of three diesel compounds leached from the specimen in the order of decreasing amount were undecane, pentadecane, and docosane. The curing of the soil contaminated with pentadecane was relatively slow.

This test was performed to evaluate the change of the unconfined compressive strength, strength parame¡?ters which resulted from direct shear test and oil residue percents analyzed by GC-MS as time lapse, oil addition. Unconfined compression strength of $10\%$ kerosene added by weight of dry soil recovered as time passed. In the case of $5\%$ kerosene added, the strength recovered as much as clean clayey soil after about 50 days passing. For the case of diesel added, the recovery of unconfined compressive strength was not shown even though about 60 days passed. The strength parameters (c, $\psi$) of kerosene added not changed but for diesel added, the cohesion was very decreased as diesel addition increased. Residual percent of kerosene in the soil was less than that of diesel as time passed.
