  • This paper is study on simultaneous reduction of NOx and soot for direct injection diesel engine using high and low cetane fuels. The stratified injection system was applied for diesel engine to use high and low cetane fuel. In this study, diesel fuel was used as high cetane fuels, methanol was used as low cetane fuels. Some parts of the injection system, ie. Nozzle holder. delivery vale, was remodeled to inject dual fuel sequentially from one injector. The leak injection quantity ratio of dual fuel was certificated by volumetric ratio at injection quantity experiment. According as concentration of low cetane fuel was varied, combustion experiment was performed using Toroidal and Complex chamber. Also, exhaust gas and fuel consumption were measured at the same time. Simultaneous reduction of NOx and soot was achieved at complex chamber regardless of concentration of low cetane fuel. However, according as concentration of low cetane fuel was increased, THC and CO was increased.

  • Combustion oriented noise is a part of engine noise, which is mainly determined by the in-cylinder pressure profile and the structure attenuation of an engine. A numerical model for predicting the in-cylinder pressure profile and the resultant combustion noise developed by the use of a commercial code. The model is experimentally validated and updated based on the performance as well as the noise by considering the fuel injection timing, the fuel injection rate, Cetane number, intake temperature, and compression ratio. For providing a design guide of a fuel injector for a low combustion noise engine model, the optimal parameters of injection pressure profile, injection rate profile, and injection timing are determined, which gives the 5 dBA noise reduction.

  • Diesel engine is widely used for ship and industry source of power because of its high thermal efficiency and reliability and durability. However it lead to air pollution due to exhaust gas, and it is important to develop diesel engine of lower air-pollution to decrease the hazardous exhaust gas emissions. As one of the ways, the study for practically using the high pressure of fuel injection and variable injection timing system is being processing. The high pressure injection, which is said to be an effective means for reducing both NOx and particulate emissions, and great improvements in combustion characteristics have been reported by many researchers. In this study, electronic-hydraulic fuel injection system and hydraulic fuel injector system have been applied to the D.I. test engine for high pressure injection and variable injection timing. The injection pressure and injection rate depending upon accumulator pressure were measured with strain gage and Bosch injection rate measuring system before fitting the system into test engine, and analyzed the characteristics of the injection system. The combustion characteristics with this injection system has been analyzed with data concerning heat release rate, pressure rising rate, ignition point, ignition delay and maximum pressure value.

  • To reduce the soot and NOx simultaneously, a new system of stratified injection is developed. This system discharges stratified diesel-methanol in a D. I. Diesel Engine. Nozzle and delivery valve of conventional injection system were remodeled to inject diesel and methanol from one injector sequently. The quantity of diesel and methanol was controled precisely by micrometers mounted on the injection control lack. The real injection ratio of dual fuel was measured by volumetric ratio. We could confirm the capabilities that soot and NOx simultaneously were reduced by diesel-methanol stratified injection from the results of in-cylinder pressure data obtained from combustion experiment by stratified injection, heat release rate and mass fraction bumed.

  • The pump-pipe-injector system is that most commonly used type of injection equipment for diesel engines. In this study, a new electromagnetic fuel injection system was designed and carried out the experiment of single cylinder direct injection(DI) diesel engine. This system do not need the cam shaft for fuel injection. The effects of the injection timing on the combustion process and emission were investigated. The results are that 1) atomization was improved, 2) combustion pressure was increased and ignition delay became shorter than before, 3) Low smoke level guarantee with more advanced injection timing without abnormal combustion but NOX concentration was increased as the injection time advanced.

  • A new method that optimizes a control of hydrocarbon (HC) addition to diesel exhaust gas for HC type DeNOx catalyst system has been developed. These catalysts are called the HC-DeHOx catalyst in this paper. The system using HC-DeNOx catalyst requires a resonable quantity of hydrocarbons addition in the inlet gas of the catalyst, because the HC concentration in a diesel engine is so low that the HC is not sufficient for NOx conversion. It is expected that this study offers a robust data developing HC injection system.

  • The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the characteristics of ;$NO_x$ and soot emissions under a wide range of engine load have been experimentally investigated by a water-cooled, four-cylinder, indirect injection, four cycle and marine diesel engine operating at two kinds of engine speeds. The purpose of the present study is to develop the EGR control system for reducing $NO_x$ and soot emissions simultaneously in diesel engines. The EGR system is used to reduce NOx emissions, and a novel diesel soot removal apparatus with a cylinder-type scrubber for the experiment system which has 6 water injectors(A water injector is made up 144 nozzles with 1.0mm in diameter) is specially designed and manufactured to reduce the soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to intake system of the engines. The intake oxygen concentration obtained by the intake air flow and the oxygen concentration in the recirculated exhaust gas, and the exhaust oxygen concentration measured in exhaust manifold are used to analyse and discuss the influences of EGR on NOx and soot emissions. The experiments are performed at the fixed fuel injection timing of $15.3^{\circ}$ BTDC regardless of experimental conditions. It is found that $NO_x$ emissions decrease and soot emissions increase owing to the drop of intake oxygen concentration and exhaust oxygen concentration as EGR rate rises. Also, one can conclude that it is sufficient for the scrubber EGR system with a novel diesel soot removal apparatus to reduce $NO_x$ emissions, but not to reduce soot emissions.

솔레노이드 및 피에조 인젝터의 고속분사 응답성 해석 (Analysis of Fast Injection Response Characteristics Between Solenoid and Piezo-Driven Injector)

  • 고압 인젝터의 성능은 디젤 연소엔진의 동력, 배출물, 연료소모와 직접적인 관계가 있다. 본 논문에서는 솔레노이드 코일과 피에조 세라믹으로 구동되는 커먼레일 디젤 분사용 인젝터의 응답 특성을 AMESim 코드를 사용하여 상대 비교 연구를 수행하였다. 따라서 연료압력, 분공경을 주요 해석변수로 설정하였다. 본 연구를 수행한 결과, 솔레노이드 구동 인젝터에 비해 피에조 구동 인젝터가 상대적으로 더 빠른 응답성과 더 높은 제어성을 가짐을 알 수 있었으며, 특히 다단분사 적용시, 이런 결과가 매우 효과적임을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • Future exhaust gas limits for diesel-driven passenger cars will force the automotive industry to significantly improve the performance of engine. Since modern common-rail injection systems deliver more degrees of freedom referring to the injection process, again the optimization of the injection process could offer a possibility to meet the exhaust gas limits. This study describes the characteristic the pilot spray structure of piezo-driven injector for a passenger car common-rail system to be applicable multiple injection caused by fast response rather than solenoid-driven injector. The piezo-driven injector is prototype injector with same needle chamber of solenoid injector and the solenoid-driven one is commercial injector. The pilot spray characteristic such as spray tip penetration, spray speed, spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the Mie scattering method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. It was found that piezo-driven injector effected electric change as important factor and showed faster response than solenoid-driven injector.

탄화수소 환원제 공급에 따른 플라즈마-DeNOx 촉매의 성능에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on dte Performance of Plasma-DeNOx Catalyst widt Supplying Hydrocarbon Reductant)

  • To improve the performance of plasma-DeNOx catalyst, a research on active system was performed experimentally. Two hydrocarbons, propane and diesel, were used as a reductant in this study. First, using propane, basic performances of plasma-DeNOx catalyst such as the effects of plasma and C/N ratio were measured at the various engine operating conditions. NOx conversion of catalyst was improved as plasma power or C/N ratio was increased. Next, diesel was injected in the exhaust gas flow as a reductant. The first test using diesel as a reductant is spray visualization in a high temperature flow and spray images were utilized for analysis of posterior test results. To evaluate the effect of an injection direction, it was compared with 6 installation methods of diesel injector due to THC concentrations at the inlet of plasma. From the results, injector was installed toward downstream direction below the pipe. Then, basic performances of plasma-DeNOx catalyst with various injection quantities were measured. As an injection quantity was increased, $NO_2$ conversion of plasma reactor was increased but NOx conversion of catalyst was nearly zero. This was because NOx conversion of catalyst had slowed as time goes by due to black particles which had been adhered to the catalyst.
