The objective of this study is to investigate the atomization characteristics and the performance characteristics of a C. I. engine by using the changes of the injection nozzle type and the ultrasonic-energy-added system. In order to evaluate the effect of ultrasonic energy and of change of injection nozzle type in the performance characte- ristics of a diesel engine, measurements of droplet size of diesel fuel were carried out by using Malvern system. In all types of injection nozzles, SMD of the ultrasonic- energy -added diesel fuel was smaller than that of the conventional diesel fuel and the more injection pressure increased, the more SMD decreased. There was a small increase in SMD with the distance from injection nozzle under all conditions of the injection nozzle types. The minimum SMD was found in the injection nozzle of B type. In the diesel engine test, there were three results about the engine performance. Compared with the injection nozzle of A type, B type had excellent effects in the engine performance. The most excellent effects about the engine performance were obtained in the case of ultrasonic-energy-added diesel fuel. In addition, the torque diagram in the case of ultrasonic-energy-added diesel fuel was more stable and periodical than others.
The main objective of this study is to investigate the correlation of chemical structure and cetane number of reformed diesel fuels by ultrasonic irradiation. In order to analyze the effect of the chemical structure and the cetane number of reformed diesel fuels by ultrasonic irradiation, $^1H-NMR$ was used. From the study, following conclusive remarks can be made. 1) BI(=Branch Index), aromatics percentages, and $H_{\alpha}(={\alpha}-methyl$ functional group) of the reformed diesel fuels by ultrasonic irradiation decreased more than those of the conventional diesel fuel. 2) All the cetane numbers which were calculated from carbon type structure and hydrogen type distribution of the reformed diesel fuels increased more than those of the conventional diesel fuel. 3) Using predicated equation of cetane number caculated from carbon type structure is more reasonable than that caculated from hydrogen type distribution 4) BI, aromatics percentages, and $H_{\alpha}$ on both of conventional fuel and reformed diesel fuels by ultrasonic irradiation are inversely proportional to cetane number on these fuels.
The introduction of a diesel engine into the passenger car and light duty applications in the United States involves significant technical challenges for the automotive makers. This paper describes the SCR System optimization procedure for such a diesel engine application to meet Tier2 Bin5 emission regulation. A urea SCR system, a representative $NO_x$ reduction after-treatment technique, is applied to a 3.0 liter diesel engine. To achieve the maximum $NO_x$ reduction performance, the exhaust system layout was optimized using series of the computational fluid dynamics and the urea distribution uniformity test. Furthermore a comprehensive simulation model for the key factors influencing $NO_x$ reduction performance was developed and embedded in the Simulink/Matlab environment. This model was then applied to the urea SCR system and played a key role to shorten the time needed for SCR control parameter calibration. The potential of a urea SCR system for reducing diesel $NO_x$ emission is shown for FTP75 and US06 emission standard test cycle.
This paper is based on experiments conducted on a stationary, four stroke, naturally aspirated air cooled, single cylinder compression ignition engine coupled with an electrical swinging field dynamometer. Instead of 100% diesel, 20% Jatropha oil methyl ester with 80% diesel blend was injected directly in engine beside 25% pre-mixed charge of diesel in mixing chamber and with 20% exhaust gas recirculation. The performance and emission characteristics are compared with conventional 100% diesel injection in main chamber. The blend with diesel premixed charge with and without exhaust gas recirculation yields in reduction of oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter. Adverse effects are reduction of brake thermal efficiency, increase of unburnt hydrocarbons (UBHC), carbon monoxide (CO) and specific energy consumption. UBHC and CO emissions are higher with Diesel Premixed Combustion Ignition (DPMCI) mode compared to compression ignition direct injection (CIDI) mode. Percentage increases in UBHC and CO emissions are 27% and 23.86%, respectively compared to CIDI mode. Oxides of nitrogen ($NO_x$) and soot emissions are lower and the percentage decrease with DPMCI mode are 32% and 33.73%, respectively compared to CIDI mode.
In recently, lots of researcher have been attached to develope various alternative fuels and to use renewable fuels for solution of the exhaust emission problems. In this study, the usability of used vegetable oil as alternative fuel for diesel engines has been investigated. This paper was compared with the exhaust emissions and performance in diesel engine with used vegetable oil and conventional diesel fuel. Since the vegetable oil includes oxygen of about 10%, it influenced the combustion process strongly. So, the smoke emissions of used vegetable oil were exhausted to be lower than those of diesel fuel. Also, the used vegetable oil was much the same cycle to cycle variation with diesel fuel except $P_{(dP}$d.theta.)max/, but the cycle to cycle variation of used vegetable oil was reduced significantly by preheating of the fuel and swirling of the intake air. It was concluded that used vegetable oil could be utilized effectively as renewable fuel for diesel engine.e.
Recently, our world is faced with very serious and hard problems related to the air pollution due to the exhaust emissions of the diesel engine. So, lots of researchers have studied to reduce the exhaust emissions which influenced the environment strong. In this paper, the effect of oxygen component in fuel on the exhaust emissions has been investigated for diesel engine. And, we tried to analysis the quantities of the low and high hydrocarbon among the exhaust emissions in diesel engine. It have been investigated by the quantitative analysis of the hydrocarbon $C_1\simC_6$ using the gas chromatography. This study carried out by comparing the chromatogram with diesel fuel and diesel fuel blended DGM(diethylene glycol dimethyl ether) 5%. The results of this study show that the hydrocarbon $C_1\simC_6$ among the exhaust emissions of the mixed fuels are exhausted lower than those of the diesel fuel at the all load and speed. In particular, high boiling point hydrocarbons such as $C_5$ and $C_6$ were reduced remarkably in high speed and load region.

Misfueling accidents significantly damage the engines of both gasoline and diesel vehicles, and should be avoided by rapid and accurate fuel discrimination. Gasoline fuel contains bioethanol. Thus, the detection of ethanol vapor produced by gasoline can be used to distinguish between gasoline and diesel. In the present study, Pt-doped $SnO_2$ hollow nanospheres, Mg-doped $In_2O_3$ hollow microspheres, and Pt-doped ZnO nanostructures have been used as gas sensors to discriminate between gasoline and diesel fuels. All three sensors are able to detect and discriminate between gases evaporating from gasoline and diesel. Among the sensors, the Mg-doped $In_2O_3$ hollow microspheres show a significant gas response (resistance ratio = 4.97) quickly (~3 s) after exposure to gasoline-evaporated gas at $225^{\circ}C$, but did not show any substantial response to diesel-evaporated gas. This demonstrates that gasoline and diesel fuels can be discriminated using small and cost-effective oxide semiconductor gas sensors.
In this study, the remediation of diesel contaminated soil was attempted with ozone treatment and Fenton reaction. About 10% of initial diesel concentration was removed by the ozone saturated solution. The pseudo-first order decomposition constant of diesel contaminated soil in the presence of 5% of hydrogen peroxide with 1.82, 2.82, 4.82, 6.82, and 11.82% of iron contents was 0.0228, 0.0308, 0.0482, 0.0471, and 0.0592 $min^{-1}$ respectively. The decomposition constant of the diesel was 0.0064 $min^{-1}$ with the addition of ozone saturated solution only. On the addition of ozone saturated solution in the presence of 5% hydrogen peroxide and 5% iron, the decomposition constant of the diesel was 0.0850 $min^{-1}$. These results indicated that the decomposition rate was 190% faster than without the addition of ozone saturated solution. Thus, the application of both ozone and the fenton reaction is promising for the remediation of the diesel contaminated soil.
This research is about the exhaust gas and driving performance test which are for CNG-Diesel dual fuel engine. The CNG-Diesel dual fuel engine converted from 2500cc diesel has two steps of injection systems; small amount of diesel is injected to mixture CNG in cylinder to ignite before CNG is injected into each intake manifold to form mixture. The amounts of output power and emission in duel fuel consumption were measured by engine dynamometer and exhaust gas analyzer. Over 90% of diesel consumption reduction, similar driving performance to current diesel engine and reduced emission on $CO_2$ and PM, respectively, were indicated through the measurements. The two steps of system were applied to vehicle to investigate exhaust gas characteristics and driving performance via NEDC mode and real driving test. Additional oxidation catalyst was applied to reduce emission on the test vehicle and the NEDC mode test showed the reduction of Co, $CO_2$, Pm and THC.
There were some papers for diesel engine performance tests using BDF, but few article deals with the temperature and soot concentration of Bio diesel flame. Since the flame temperature of diesel engines is so high and change rapidly, an optical method for measurement of flame temperature is known as the most effective one. The two-color method regarding the visible wavelength radiation for the soot particles in flame was applied on Bio diesel flame in order to measure flame temperature and soot concentration in a diesel engine. Photo detecting device was newly designed and employed TSL250R, photo-diode, to pick-up the light information emitted from the combustion flame. As a result, real flame temperature T, as a flame brightness temperature, through Ta1, Ta2, were obtained and finally the characteristics of KL value as a soot concentration reveal the difference of combustion information between diesel fuel, blending oil and Bio diesel fuel oil.
