A Study on the Developement of Korean Driving Cone Penetrometer Test(DCPT) Method (한국형타격콘관입시험법의 개발에 관한 연구)

  • A variety of in-situ geotechnical investigation methods are currently used to measure the properties of each site, but in-situ tests for "Intermediate Geomaterial (IGM)", which is the transitional geomaterial between soil and rock, have only limited application. In the United States, "The Texas Cone Penetrometer Test (TCPT)", which is the geotechnical investigation technology for IGM, is utilized to create foundation designs. This paper introduces "The Driving Cone Penetrometer Test (DCPT)", which can be performed using general geotechnical investigation equipment and also analyzes the correlation between various in-situ geotechnical investigation methods by applying DCPT on the ground. The results showed that the correlation between the driving cone penetrometer test (DCPT) and standard penetration test (SPT) was quite high. Additionally, the scope of DCPT properties was wide, depending on soil types.

Screening of Lactic Acid Bacteria for the Development of Probiotics and the Effect of Cryoprotectant Agents (생균제 개발을 위한 유산균의 선별 및 동결건조 보호제의 효과)

  • For the developement of probiotics, three strains haying psychorophilic and salt tolerant characteristics were isolated from Kimchi. Among the isolated strains, MGl9, MG89 and MG208 were identified as Lactobacillus brevis, Enterococcus faecium and Lactobacillus plantarum, respectively. The relationship between cryoprotectant and the viability of freeze dried strains has been studied. The most effective cryoprotectant for MGl9 was found to be 10% skim milk contained 1% soluble starch haying the survival rate of 71.4%. In MG89, 10% skim milk contained 1% sucrose and 10% skim milk contained l% fructose in MG208 were showed effective cryoprotectant having the survival rate 68.9% and 64.7%. respectively These results suggest that these isolated strains can play an important role as probiotics in aquaculture.

Effects of Dietary Inclusion of Astaxanthin on Growth, Muscle Pigmentation and Antioxidant Capacity of Juvenile Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary astaxanthin levels on growth performance, feed utilization, muscle pigmentation, and antioxidant capacity in juvenile rainbow trout. Four experimental diets were formulated to contain 0, 50, 75, and 100 mg/kg astaxanthin (designed as AX0, AX50, AX75, and AX100). Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish (18.5 g/fish) for 10 weeks. Growth performance and muscle composition of fish were not affected by dietary astaxanthin levels. Total carotenoid concentration in the muscle of fish fed the AX50 diet was higher than that of fish fed the AX0 diet, but no significant differences were observed between these fish and those fed the AX75 and AX100 diets. Muscle astaxanthin content increased with increased astaxanthin in the diet. Deposition of astaxanthin in the flesh resulted in a decrease in lightness and an increase in redness and yellowness. The fillets from trout fed the AX75 diet had significantly lower lightness than trout fed the AX50 and AX100 diets. Fish fed the AX50 and AX75 diets showed significantly lower catalase activity than those fed the control diet. Total antioxidant status increased significantly in all astaxanthin supplemented groups when compared to the control group. Superoxide dismutase activity was significantly decreased in fish fed the AX50 diet compared to fish fed the AX0 diet. These findings suggest that while fillet pigmentation increased with increasing dietary astaxanthin concentration, indices of fish antioxidant capacity may not be affected in a dose dependent manner.

Antioxidant and Neuroprotective Effects of Doenjang Prepared with Rhizopus, Pichia, and Bacillus

  • A new type of doenjang was manufactured by mixing soaked soybean, koji (Rhizopus oryzae), cheonggukjang (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MJ1-4 and B. amyloliquefaciens EMD17), and Pichia farinosa SY80 as a yeast, salt, and water, followed by fermentation with koji that was made by fermenting whole wheat with R. oryzae. The mixed culture doenjang was designed to have a more palatable flavor and stronger biological activities than the conventional product. The extract of mixed culture doenjang showed higher antioxidant activity than the commercial doenjang as evaluated by the ferric reducing antioxidant power assay although it was not significantly different from the commercial product in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical scavenging activities. Further, the mixed culture doenjang reduced intracellular reactive oxygen species levels and protected cells from glutamate-induced cytotoxicity more efficiently in human hippocampal HT22 neuroblastoma cells than the commercial doenjang. In conclusion, a newly-developed mixed culture doenjang had a strong antioxidant activity in vitro and cultured cell model systems, exhibited a potential to prevent oxidative stress-associated disorders although animal and clinical studies are needed to confirm its in vivo efficacy.

Developement of Radiation Measuring System using Wireless Communication (무선통신을 이용한 방사선측정 시스템 개발)

  • Radiation measuring system using wireless communication method with single channel has been diveloped and tested. In this system, radiation signals from GM tube are transformed into digital pulses in pulse processing circuit and modulated in FSK (frequency shift keying) circuit for digital communication and then wirelessly transmitted to a receiving unit. The digital pulses received are then demodulated in FSK circuit and converted into radiation dose/dose rate in the data acquisition unit to display on the screen of a personal computer. The performance of this system was evaluated by using both a pulse generator and a standard radiation source(Cs-137). In both cases, digital pulses with 5V were observed in pulse processing circuit without distortion of their shape through wireless communication system. The experimental results of radiation measurement by this system after several test-irradiation of GM detector to a standard radiation source(Cs-137), showed good agreement with irradiation dose rate within 10% difference, and proved that this system could be effectively utillized as radiation measuring instrument. It is expected that this wireless radiation measuring system developed for the first time in Korea, can be used as a radiation monitor as well as a personal dosimeter if we can further improve this system to adopt wireless multichannel communication system.

Role of the $Bi_2O_3\;in\;SrBi_2TaNbO_9/Bi_2O_3/SrBi_2TaNbO_9$ Heterostructure and Low Temperature Annealing Property

  • Ferroelectric properties of $SrBi_2TaNbO_9$ (SBTN) thin films were changed by the amount of Bi content in SBTN. We suggested that the addition of excess Bi into the films could be accomplished by heat-treating $SBTN/Bi_2O_3/SBTN$ heterostructure fabricated by r.f. magnetron sputtering method. Excess Bi composition was controlled by the thickness of the sandwiched $Bi_2O_3$ from 0 to $400\;\AA$. When the SBTN thin films were inserted by $400\;{\AA}\;Bi_2O_3$ layer, $Bi_2Pt$ phase was formed as a second phase in SBTN films, resulting in poor ferroelectric properties. The onset temperature for hysteresis loop can be reduced by heat treating $SBTN/Bi_2O_3/SBTN$ heterostructure. The films with $SBTN/Bi_2O_3(100\;{\AA})/SBTN$ hetero-structure followed by annealing at $650^{\circ}C$ for 30 min show 2Pr and Ec of $5.66\;{\mu}C/\textrm{cm}^2$ and 54 kV/cm, respectively.

  • Computer applications for engineering design evolve rapidly. Many design frameworks were developed by the simulation based systems so that organizations could achieve significant benefits due to cost reduction in designing. However, today’s transient design issue requires being adaptable to more complicated and atypical problems. In this paper the Multidisciplinary Language Runtime (MLR) design framework is developed. The MLR provides flexible and extensible interface between analysis modules and numerical analysis codes. It also supports Meta Modeling, Meta Variable, and XML script for atypical design formulation. By applying object-oriented design scheme to implement abstractions of the key components required for iterative systems analyses, the MLR provides flexible and extensible problem-solving environment.

  • As concerns increase over the dangers of environmental destruction on a global scale, CFC regulations have finally been carried out and some CFC's are expected to be phased out by the end of 1995. The research for alternative refrigerants is very demanding. The major activities related to alternative refrigerants are focused on two different areas; one is the development of mixed refrigerants by using the existing refrigerants, and the other is the development of new HFC refrigerants. One of the most promising alternative refrigerant for CFC-12 is HFC-134a. HFC-134a has often been used as a replacement of CFC-12 for automotive air-conditioners. However, due to different thermodynamic properties of HFC-134a, performances of the replaced system are degraded compared with those of the CFC-12 system. Sometimes, the complete redesign of the system is required. In order to analyse and design the new system effectively, the developement of a system simulation program, in which HFC-134a can be selected as a refrigerant, is recommended. Therefore, the summary of this research is as follows : (1) The various thermodynamic properties of HFC-134a are ana lysed and programmed. (2) The model for serpentine heat exchanger is developed and programmed. (3) These subroutines are integrated to develop to develop an automotive air conditioning system simulation program which is verified by the test results. (4) The verified program is used to analyse the performance of a selected automotive air conditioning system.

  • The purpose of this research is to propose a system to detect a strip defect on a iron plate using an image processing, one way of finding defects on an iron plate. An existing way of image processing is using a light source which release a light energy in a certain frequency and a light absorbing display which responds to the light source. This research attempts to detect defects by using a image processing and multi-Tread which handles an illumination, without depending on characteristics of light frequency. One of the advantages of this method is that it makes up for the weakness of the existing method which was too difficult for users to notice a defect. Also this method makes it possible to realize a real-time monitoring on a plate of iron. The other advantage of this method is that it reduces the price of hardwares on demand to match the frequency of light emitting display and light absorbing display because this method only needs a hardware which is easy to buy in any market.

  • Cells of Stigmatella aurantiace developed in the light on the medium containing calcium, barium, or lithium ion formed fruiting bodies without stalk. Fruiting body with stalk was formed on the medium containing calcium ion and GMP (GMP-medium) even under the dark condition. On the medium containing calcium and pheromone (pheromone-medium), most cells were developed only into the stalk in the light and into the sporangium in the dark. The number of aggregate formed on the medium containing calcium ion (Ca-medium) was more than that formed on the medium containing calcium, potassium, and sodium ions (CPS-medium). The number of aggregate formed on the GMP or pheromone-medium was less than that formed on the Ca-medium. Both pheromone and GMP reduced the time required for aggregate formation when cells were developed in the dark. Light stimulated cells to form more aggregates in short time when it was introduced into the Ca-, CPS-, GMP-, or pheromone-medium.
