  • As the demand for urban underground space increases recently, urban tunnel planning is actively progressing. In the urban area, a underground station is planned in consideration of the living environment of residents, and 2-arch tunnel is applied for the stability of existing structures and reduction of environmental damage. However, since the depth of weak rock mass is deeply distributed in the urban area due to severe weathering, careful planning is required to secure tunnel stability. In addition, if TBM mechanical excavation is applied as the main tunnel excavation method considering the composite ground in urban area, the construction connectivity with the 2-arch tunnel of the NATM concept may be deteriorated. In this study, the design case of applying TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel for the first time in Korea was mainly described. The main considerations for the segment design of TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel were explained for side tunnels. Also, a stability analysis was conducted to verify the effectiveness and adequacy of the TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the durability and deterioration of concrete lining in the seven conventional tunnels. These tunnels were constructed about 40~70 years ago, and closed about 10~40 years ago. The field investigation and various laboratory testings were performed for this study. It was observed from the visual, examinations that the concrete linings of 7 tunnels were severely deteriorated, such as, cracks, leakages, desquamation, and exploitations. The compressive strengths obtained from rebound hardness method and uniaxial compressive strength test on core specimens largely differed depending on the locations in the tunnel. The maximum compressive strength of concrete lining was greater about 2 times than the minimum compressive strength of concrete lining in the same tunnel. The results of micro-structural analysis showed that the substances deteriorating the concrete lining, such as ettringite and thaumasite, were detected in the concrete lining of tunnel.

  • To investigate the compressive behavior of partially encased recycled aggregate concrete (PERAC) stub columns after exposed to elevated temperatures, 22 specimens were tested. The maximum temperature suffered, the replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), the endurance time and the spacing between links were considered as the main parameters. It was found that the failure mode of post-heated PERAC columns generally matched that of traditional partially encased composite (PEC) columns, but the flange of specimens appeared premature buckling after undergoing the temperature of 400℃ and above. Additionally, the ultimate strength and ductility of the specimens deteriorated with the elevated temperatures and extended heating time. When 400℃< T ≤ 600℃, the strength reduction range is the largest, about 11% ~ 17%. The higher the replacement ratio of RCA, the lower the ultimate strength of specimens. At the temperature of 600℃, the ultimate strength of specimens with the RCA replacement ratio of 50% and 100% is 0.94 and 0.91 times than that of specimens without RCA, respectively. But the specimen with 50% replacement ratio of RCA showed the best ductility performance. And the bearing capacity and ductility of PERAC stub columns were changed for the better due to the application of links. When the RCA replacement ratio is 100%, the ultimate strength of specimens with the link spacing of 100 mm and 50 mm increased 14% and 25% than that of the specimen without links, respectively. Based on the results above, a formula for calculating the ultimate strength of PERAC stub columns after exposure to high temperatures was proposed.

  • Recently sewage facilities mainly consisted of concrete structures are being deteriorated seriously by biodeterioration originated from sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. In this study, to prevent biochemical corrosion of the sewer concrete, antibiotics which prevent growth of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria were developed and antimicrobial performance of it was investigated. After that, to consider applicability of antibiotics to concrete, physical properties of concrete spread with antibiotics were investigated. As a results of the study, it was proved that the antimicrobial performance of antibiotics was available. Also compressive strength and bond strength of concrete didn't closely connected with antibiotics, and resistance to abrasion, water absorption and air permeability of concrete was improved remarkably by spraying with it.

  • The duties of the restorative materials are to bear up against stress and to protect reinforcement corrosion. So the restorative materials are estimated by various kinds of strength, permeability and etc, But, in case of existing performance evaluation of restorative materials, because various deterioration factors are separately acted, the system of performance evaluation is different from that of combined deterioration of real structure and it is difficult to evaluate the exact performance of restorative materials. In this study, to evaluate Performance of restorative materials, we compare their korea standard properties in terms of compressive and bending strength and permeability of water and air with real durability for carbonation, salt damage and actual reinforcement corrosion like ratio of corrosion area. weight reduction and corrosion velocity of steel bar under environment of combined deterioration. The results showed that strength and permeability of restorative materials are similar but their resistance to carbonation, salt damage and actual reinforcement corrosion are very different.

  • Nondestructive testing techniques have been historically and commonly used to evaluate the quality of existing concrete structures. The techniques utilized included visual inspection, hammer sounding, Schmidt hammer rebounding, and ultrasonic pulse velocity testing including tomographic imaging. Results of the nondestructive tests were used to determine areas to be tested with local destructive tests. These tests included concrete compressive strengths, chloride testing, and petrographic testing. The overall results indicate that inside core of each of the pier caps are healthy. On all of the pier caps, extensive exterior concrete layer rehabilitation needs to be completed. This paper shows the application and interpretation of common nondestructive testing techniques and the consequent repair, rehabilitation, maintenance decisions and safety assesment.

  • As automobile drivers' desires become ever diversified with the spreading phenomenon of 'characteristic automobile decorations', it is feared that the design quality may be deteriorated, while the safety be retarded in terms of performance and function. In Korea, the 'Dress-up tuning' becomes the source of the social criticism because of lack of relevant codes and professional tuning services, while automobile drivers are excessively having their automobiles overdressed ignoring the overall aesthetic aspect and functions. Under such a circumstance, this study was aimed at reviewing the practices and dress-up accessories by each automobile part of those foreign automobile makers and professional tuners who have introduced the concept of 'customizing' and developed dress-up accessories and various tuning parts only to satisfy their customers' tuning needs. It is anticipated that automobile styling would tend more to pursue a 'coordination' featuring ordinary consumers' individualistic senses, while customers' needs reflecting their life styles be more refined. Meanwhile, Korean automobile consumers have accommodated the product designs : presented within the producers' frameworks, but they are expected to pursue the design values varying according to changing structures of production, society and industry as well as the resultant design activities. In all, makers and designers are requested to be aware of such changing environment structures and thereby, explore other alternatives, or reflect seriously on the socio-cultural implications inherent in the products, namely on the production and consumption of people's favorites.

  • We have investigated the effects of hydrogen annealing on the physical and electrical properties of $SrBi_{2}Ta_{2}O_9(SBT)$ thin films in the Pt/SBT/Si (MFS) structure and Pt/SBT/Pt (MFM) one, respectively. The microstructure and electrical characteristics of the SBT films were deteriorated after hydrogen annealing due to the damage of the SBT films during the annealing process. To investigate the reason of the degradation of the SBT films in this work, in particular, the effect of the Pt top electrodes, SBT thin films deposited on Si, Pt, respectively, were annealed with the same process conditions. From the XRD, XPS, P-V, and C-V data, it was seen that the SBT itself was degraded after $H_2$ annealing even without the Pt top electrodes. In addition, the degradation of the SBT films after $H_2$ annealing was accelerated by the catalytic reaction of the Pt top electrodes which is so-called hydrogen degradation. To prevent this phenomenon, we proposed the alternative top electrode material, i.e. Ir, and the electrical properties of the SBT thin films were examined in the $Ir/IrO_2/SBT/IrO_2$ structures before and after the H$_2$ annealing and recovery heat-treatment processes. From the results of the P-V measurement, it could be concluded that Ir is one of the promising candidate as the electrode material for degradation resistance in the MFM structure using SBT thin films.

  • Concrete structures has been deteriorated by and freezing the thawing due to temperature gap. This study was conducted to evaluate durability of concrete which are increasingly demanded recently. Therefore the research of durability must be executed for application of waste foundry sand concrete real structures. Concrete durability properties incorporating waste foundry sand was performed with the variable of W/C ratio. Sand/Waste foundry sand ratio and Air entrainment-Non air entrainment. Cylinder specimens were made and subjected to freezing and thawing cycle at -18$^{\circ}C$ and 4$^{\circ}C$. Dynamic modulus of elasticity were evaluated as F/T cycle increase. The results show that strength of concrete is increased the W/C ratio decrease, the Sand/Waste foundry sand ratio increases when the concrete contains AE agent and decreasing W/C ratio and AE concrete makes improved resistance of freezing and thawing improved. Especially, resistance of freezing and thawing is improved by Fine aggregate/Waste foundry sand ratio which is 50%, 25%, 0% in a row. Therefore it is turn out the waste foundry sand could be applied to concrete from the experiment.

  • Recently, the repair and reinforcement of deteriorated concrete buildings has attracted much interest. In order to accurately evaluate the safety of these existing structures, it is essential to know the strength of the concrete that they are composed of. The core drilling method is considered to be the most effective and common method of assessing the compressive strength of concrete. In general, the regulations do not permit the core specimens within reinforcing bars to be used to assess the strength of the concrete, even if the core specimens contain reinforcing bars in some cases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the reinforcement arrangement on the compressive strength of concrete, and to propose the quantitative specific standard of strength for core specimens containing reinforcements, in order to facilitate their safe inspection by repair or retrofit companies who want to evaluate the soundness of the structures. To complete this research, one type of cylinder specimen without reinforcement and 14 types of specimens with reinforcement arrangements were prepared and their compressive strength evaluated. It was found that the strength of the cylinders with reinforcement volumes of up to $50cm^3$ (about 4-ϕ13mm) was more than 80% of that of the cylinders without any reinforcement.
