  • To understand fungal species in evergreen broadleaf forest, occurrence and habitate of wild mushrooms spontaneously growing at the Dongbaekdongsan of Seonheulgot in Jeju Island were investigated. Fungal samples were collected from an area of $500\;m^2$ size consisting of four designated plots from in June 2007 to December 2008. Wild mushrooms were identified 69 genera and 178 species within the sampling places. Among 178 species, twenty-eight genera and fifty species were first reported in Jeju Island. Especially, Amanita pseudogemmata was first recorded in Korea. The mushroom species were divided into six groups on the basis of fungal habitats in which 44 species were on dead tree, 29 species on fallen leaf, 99 species on soil surface, 2 species on animal feces, 2 species on insect or mushroom, and 2 species on moss.

  • The vascular plants of Island Dolsando, located in Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do were surveyed 15 times from June 2017 to March 2018. Based on the collected specimens, there were 570 taxa; 113 families, 338 genera, 517 species, 1 subspecies, 49 varieties and 3 formas respectively. 18 taxa of Korean endemic species such as Asarum maculatum Nakai were found. There were total 90 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants specially designated by the Ministry of Environment (Level V to I), 4 taxa of rare plants and 8 taxa of endangered plants including Ligularia taquetii (H. $L{\acute{e}}v.$ & Vaniot) Nakai.

  • In September and October 2020, combined acoustic and trawl surveys were conducted in the northwestern sea of Jeju Island. In the survey area, a region, so called Jeju region, was designated to esimate the biomass of chub mackerel and jack mackerel using a trawl survey method and frequency difference method. In the September survey, the weight ratios of jack mackerel and chub mackerel to the total catch were 24.6% and 2.8%, respectively, and in the October survey, those ratios were 24.9% and 20.7%, which were used to calculate their biomass (trawl survey). Using the frequency difference range (-8 to -3dB) corresponding to two species in 120 and 200 kHz, their biomass was estimated (frequency difference method). As a result, the biomass of two species from the trawl method was 3252.3 tons in September and 5777.0 tons in October. The estimated biomass by the frequency difference method was 4926.6 tons in September and 7521.5 tons in October. It was the first trial to estimate the biomass of two species using the trawl and frequency differencing methods in South Korea although there were some differences between two methods. In addition, horizontal distributions of acoustic backscattering strength over the entire survey area were mapped.

  • This study is about the development and creation of the public installation to enhance the contact chances with plants for the city dwellers who are living in the environment of limited green space. The researcher tried to create a floral art work at an island type bus stop on the central bus only lane, where the passers-by can enjoy the contact with plants for a second on that crowded space. The researcher made the study of various related cased world-widely and existing island type bus stop on the central bus only lane. The researcher also made pre-creation study of applicable forms and elements, and developed the prototype of the installation on the base of that study. Therefore the researcher created 1 installable screen type floral art work offering abundant contact experience to the viewers which has multiple shelves in the vertical frame to fit and be substituted by the designated wall unit of the island type bus stop structure. Also the researcher developed the prototypes of 2 small interior pieces. The meaning of this study can be found in the contribution of increasing visual experiencing rate of green space and chances of experiencing plants to create positive psychological, emotional effects by developing floral art works to be installed at crowded urban public space.

  • The invasion genes from Salmonella typhimurium were identified by the construction of a cosmid library and subcloning genes into a plasmid vector, pGEM-7Z. The 4.65 kb fragment of the invasion-conferring genomic region of the subclone, pSV6235 was sequenced in both direction. The three open reading frames, which were located at downstream of a promoter region, were designated as sir (Salmonella invasion region)A coding for the 36 amino acids, sirB coding for the 132 amino acids and sirC for the 82 amino acids, respectively. Interesingly, the genomic region of pSV6235 was highly homologous to Yersinia enterocolitica genomic DNA for a high pathogenicity island and Salmonella enteritidis insertion element IS1351 and IS200 DNA. These results show that there could be a significant relationship between S. typhimurium, Y. enterocolitica and S. enteritidis with respect to horizontal evolution process and acquisition of virulence determinants by means of transposon, plasmid or bacteriophage.

  • The development of ICT brings the change in daily life and the digitized data are increasing in usage. The combination between GPS and internet results in extensive diffusion of space related information by way of smartphone, sensor and SNS. Jeju Island is only one special self-governing province in Republic of Korea and deserves to be proud of the unique culture, having those designated Intangible Cultural Heritage from UNESCO such as Culture of Jeju Haenyeo or Women Divers and Jeju Chilmeoridang Yeongdeunggut or Exorcism of Praying big Catch. In this paper, I suggest how to preserve fadable tradition economically and technically and expect to develop Haenyeo fitted portable sensors and IoT platform.

  • Purpose: A curriculum development model is presented to examine the processes necessary to develop new programs or evaluate existing programs within the philosophy of outcomes-based education in nursing, especially in the context of accreditation. The philosophy of outcomes-based education is to produce individuals who can demonstrate the evidence of competencies in designated areas of education. For nursing education, this means competencies in performing the role of professional nursing as defined by the profession and social needs at the beginning level upon completing a nursing program. Methods: A curriculum development model has been developed analytically based on the literature and experiences. Results: A 10-step process framework incorporating the tenets of outcomes-based nursing education is illustrated. Conclusion: This curriculum development framework can be applied in developing new educational programs in nursing or to evaluate and revise existing programs in anticipation of the accreditation process that is moving with a full force in such countries as Korea.

  • Thymus quinquecostatus var. magnus (Nakai) Kitam., an endemic taxon in Ulleung Island, is lectotypified. The lectotype is designated based on careful examination of the original materials (deposited in TI) cited in the protologue of the variety. In addition, taxonomic identity of T. quinquecostatus var. japonicus H. Hara, a problematic name often mistakenly referred to the above taxon, was throughly reexamined.

  • A chitinase-producing bacterium strain KCTC10714 was isolated from sea sand around the King Sejong Station, King George Island in Antarctica. It was identified as Sanguibacter sp., based on the biochemical properties and 16S rRNA gene sequence. KCTC10714 chitinase showed enzyme activity in broad range of temperature from 0 to $70^{\circ}C$. At $0^{\circ}C$, it showed 70.9% of relative activity in comparison with 100%. The chitinase gene of KCTC10714 was cloned using inverse PCR cloning method. KCTC10714 chitinase gene was designated as chi21702. The ORF of chi21702 consisted of 1,449 bp (482 amino acid), and contained ChtBD3 (a chitin/cellulose binding domain) and an active site for chitinase family 18.

  • While evaluating fungal diversity in freshwater, grasshopper feces, and soil collected at Dokdo Island in Korea, four fungal strains designated CNUFC-DDS14-1, CNUFC-GHD05-1, CNUFC-DDS47-1, and CNUFC-NDR5-2 were isolated. Based on combination studies using phylogenies and morphological characteristics, the isolates were confirmed as Ascodesmis sphaerospora, Chaetomella raphigera, Gibellulopsis nigrescens, and Myrmecridium schulzeri, respectively. This is the first records of these four species from Korea.
