In the first part of this study, five homogeneous regions in view of topographical and geographically homogeneous aspects except Jeju and Ulreung islands in Korea were accomplished by K-means clustering method. A total of 57 rain gauges were used for the regional frequency analysis with minimum rainfall series for the consecutive durations. Generalized Extreme Value distribution was confirmed as an optimal one among applied distributions. Drought rainfalls following the return periods were estimated by at-site and regional frequency analysis using L-moments method. It was confirmed that the design drought rainfalls estimated by the regional frequency analysis were shown to be more appropriate than those by the at-site frequency analysis. In the second part of this study, LH-moment ratio diagram and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test on the Gumbel (GUM), Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Generalized Logistic (GLO) and Generalized Pareto (GPA) distributions were accomplished to get optimal probability distribution. Design drought rainfalls were estimated by both at-site and regional frequency analysis using LH-moments and GEV distribution, which was confirmed as an optimal one among applied distributions. Design rainfalls were estimated by at-site and regional frequency analysis using LH-moments, the observed and simulated data resulted from Monte Carlotechniques. Design drought rainfalls derived by regional frequency analysis using L1, L2, L3 and L4-moments (LH-moments) method have shown higher reliability than those of at-site frequency analysis in view of RRMSE (Relative Root-Mean-Square Error), RBIAS (Relative Bias) and RR (Relative Reduction) for the estimated design drought rainfalls. Relative efficiency were calculated for the judgment of relative merits and demerits for the design drought rainfalls derived by regional frequency analysis using L-moments and L1, L2, L3 and L4-moments applied in the first report and second report of this study, respectively. Consequently, design drought rainfalls derived by regional frequency analysis using L-moments were shown as more reliable than those using LH-moments. Finally, design drought rainfalls for the classified five homogeneous regions following the various consecutive durations were derived by regional frequency analysis using L-moments, which was confirmed as a more reliable method through this study. Maps for the design drought rainfalls for the classified five homogeneous regions following the various consecutive durations were accomplished by the method of inverse distance weight and Arc-View, which is one of GIS techniques.
This study is mainly conducted to derive the design drought rainfall by the consecutive duration using probability weighted moments with rainfall in the regional drought frequency analysis. It is anticipated to suggest optimal design drought rainfall of hydraulic structures for the water requirement and drought frequency of occurrence for the safety of water utilization through this study. Preferentially, this study was conducted to derive the optimal regionalization of the precipitation data that can be classified by the climatologically and geographically homogeneous regions all over the regions except Cheju and Ulreung islands in Korea. Five homogeneous regions in view of topographical and climatological aspects were accomplished by K-means clustering method. Using the L-moment ratio diagram and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, generalized extreme value distribution was confirmed as the best fitting one among applied distributions. At-site and regional parameters of the generalized extreme value distribution were estimated by the method of L-moments. Design drought rainfalls using L-moments following the consecutive duration were derived by the at-site and regional analysis using the observed and simulated data resulted from Monte Carlo techniques. Relative root-mean-square error (RRMSE), relative bias (RBIAS) and relative reduction (RR) in RRMSE for the design drought rainfall derived by at-site and regional analysis in the observed an simulated data were computed and compared. In has shown that the regional frequency analysis procedure can substantially more reduce the RRMSE. RBIAS and RR in RRMSE than those of at-site analysis in the prediction of design drought rainfall. Consequently, optimal design drought rainfalls following the regions and consecutive durations were derived by the regional frequency analysis.
This study was mainly conducted to derive the design drought rainfall by the consecutive duration using probability weighted moments with rainfall in the regional drought frequency analysis. Selecting the drought rainfall series by the consecutive durations of drought observed for the long period all over the regions in Korea, optimal regionalization of the drought rainfall was classified by the climatologically and geographically homogeneous regions. Using the L-moment ratio and Kolmogorov- Smimov test, resonable frequency distribution for the drought rainfall was selected by the regions and consecutive periods of drought. Design drought rainfalls by the regions and consecutive durations were derived and compared by at-site and regional drought frequency analysis using the method of L-moments.
In this study, regional frequency analysis is used to determine each subbasin drought frequency with watershed runoff which is calculated with Tank Model in Nakdong river basin. L-Monments methd which is almost unbiased and nearly normal distribution is applied to estimate paramers of drought frequency analysis of monthly runoff time series. The duration of '76-77 was the most severe drought year than othe rwater years in this study. To decide drought frequency of each subbasin from the main basin, it is calculated by interpolaing runoff from the frequency-druoght runoff relationship. and the linear regression analysis is accomplished between drought frequency of main basin and that of each subbasin. With the results of linear regression analysis, the drought runoff of each subbasin is calculated corresponing to drought frequency 10,20 and 30 years of Nakdong river basin considering safety standards for the design of impounding facilities. As the results of this study, the proposed methodology and procedure of this study can be applied to water budget analysis considering safety standards for the design of impounding facilities in the large-scale river basin. For this purpose, above all, it is recommanded that expansion of reliable observed runoff data is necessary instead of calculated runoff by rainfall-runoff conceptual model.
In this study, the regional frequency analysis is used to determine each subbasin drought frequency with reliable monthly precipitation and the L-Moments method which is almost unbiased and has very nearly a normal distribution is used for the parameter estimation of monthly precipitation time series in Nakdong river basin. As the result of this study, the duration of '93-'94 is most severe drought year than any other water year and the drought frequency is established as compared the regional frequency analysis result of cumulative precipitation of 12th duration months in each subbasin with that of 12th duration months in the major drought duration. The Linear regression equation is induced according to linear regression analysis of drought frequency between Nakdong total basin and each subbasin of the same drought duration. Therefore, as the foundation of this study, it can be applied proposed method and procedure of this study to the water budget analysis considering safety standards for the design of impounding facilities large-scale river basin and for this purpose, above all, it is considered that expansion of reliable preciptation data is needed in watershed rainfall station.
This study, based on the monthly rainfall data, was carried out to determine the agricultural drought index which enables to describe the regional and seasonal drought characteristics of rice cropping system in Korea. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1.A new agricultural drought index (ADI) was evaluated seasonally according to the product of drought intensity and duration. This ADI is proposed as standard design criterion for irrigation planning. 2.The relationship between agricultural drought index and return periods was figured out. These diagrams could be used to estimate the seasonal drought severity of a certain year and to select design year corresponding to the specific drought frequency. 3.The regional drought characteristics were classified and those are useful to determine proper rice varieties and planting time and make drought counterplans. 4.Spring drought occurred once in 3 or 4 years and in a regional respect, rather frequently occurred in Seoul and Daegu areas than in Busan, Daejeon, Kwangju and Chuncheon areas. Summer drought occurred once in 5 years in Daegu and Busan areas and once in 7 or 8 years in other areas. 5.Sequential drought which gave severe drought damage of rice production occurred once in 20 years in Daegu area and in 10 years in Kwangju area.
Estimation of crop consumptive use is a key term of agricultural water resource systems design and operation. The 10-year return period drought has special aspects as a reference period in design process of irrigation systems in terms of agricultural water demand analysis so that crop evapotranspiration (ETc) about the return period also has to be analyzed to assist understanding of crop water requirement of paddy rice. In this study, The ETc of 10-year return period drought was computed using frequency analysis by 54 meteorological stations. To find an optimal probability distribution, 8 types of probability distribution function were tested by three the goodness of fit tests including ${\chi}^2$(Chi-Square), K-S (Kolmogorov-Smirnov) and PPCC (Probability Plot Correlation Coefficient). Optimal probability distribution function was selected the 2-parameter Log-Normal (LN2) distribution function among 8 distribution functions. Using the two selected distribution functions, the ETc of 10-year return period drought was estimated for 54 meteorological stations and compared with prior study results suggested by other researchers.
Past climate change influences multiple environmental aspects, certain of which are specifically related to agricultural water resources such as water supply and demand. Changes on rainfall and hydrologic patterns can increases the occurrence of reservoir water shortage and affect the future availability of agricultural water resources. It is a main concern for sustainable development in agricultural water resources management to evaluate adaptation capability of water supply under the changing climate and farming methods in paddy field. The purpose of this study is an evaluation method of design frequency of drought and water supply safety for agricultural reservoirs to investigate evidence of climate change occurrences at a local scale. Thus, it is a recommended practice in the development of water supply management strategies on reservoir operation under changing climate and farming methods in paddy field.
