Damping Effects of Fluid Viscous Dampers on the Seismic Response of Bridges (교량의 지진응답거동에 작용하는 액체점성감쇠기의 감쇠효과 분석)

  • Fluid viscous dampers have been used as energy dissipators or STU's (Shock Transmission Unit) in earthquake resistant designs for bridges. Viscous dampers have many advantages compared to other friction type or visco-elastic type of dampers. They do neither increase internal pier forces due to their out of phase response, nor produce reaction forces at the low velocities associated with thermal movements. Therefore, they anable the super structure to restore itself perfectly after a severe movement dut to seismic excitations. This paper investigates the response of bridges designed with viscous dampers in regard to damping coefficients, properties of dampers, and arrangements of dampers. For this purpose, time-history dynamic analyses have been performed using a very simple model relevant to a typical bridge example. Based on the results, it presents some design duidelines on how to determine a proper damping ratio and on how to arrange dampers. In usual cases, damping coefficients corresponding to about 0.2-0.3 of damping ratios seem to be very effective in bridge designs.

  • This study presents experimental and numerical aerodynamic investigation of a prototype vehicle. Aerodynamics forces examined which exerted on a prototype. This experimental study was implemented in a wind tunnel for the Reynolds number between $10^5-3.1{\times}10^5$. Numerical aerodynamic analysis of the vehicle is conducted for different Reynolds number by using FLUENT CFD software, with the k-$\varepsilon$ realizable turbulence model. The studied model aims at verifying the aerodynamic forces between experimental and numerical results. After the Reynolds number of $2.8{\times}10^5$, the drag coefficient obtained experimentally becomes independent of Reynolds number and has a value of 0.25.

  • If an excessive displacement occurs in the base isolation system, the structure will be damaged due to overturning of the upper structure. In this study, we analyze the behavior of base isolation by applying earthquake to base isolation with anti-uplift device. In the case of structures that generate horizontal reaction forces such as arch structures, horizontal reaction forces must be considered in the design of the base isolation and structural members. And anti-uplift device for preventing the excessive displacement of the base isolation system is needed.

  • The jacking of cantilever before key segment closure has been introduced to offset the long term forces caused by creep and shrinkage. In this paper, the behavior of structural system with the jacking force in approach bridge of Incheon Bridge was reviewed. The introduction of jacking force effectively offset the long term horizontal forces and allows economic substructure member design.

Physical Properties and Optimization of Tangsuyuk Batter Ingredients (탕수육 배터의 물리적 특성 및 최적화)

  • Physical properties were investigated in tangsuyuk batter containing different amounts of ingredients, such as wheat flour, corn starch, sodium bicarbonate, alum and water. For the response surface methodology (RSM) central composite design was used to determine the optimal ingredient ratios for viscosity, color properties(lightness, redness, yellowness, color differences) and cutting forces. There were significant differences(p<0.05) between the different batter mixtures. The lightness(L) of batter was in proportion to the increased amount of wheat flour and corn starch. Higher redness was recorded with increasing corn starch. Higher yellowness was observed with increasing wheat flour and sodium bicarbonate. Color differences were higher with increasing wheat flour, corn starch, and/or alum and decreasing water. Cutting forces were linearly increased with increasing sodium bicarbonate. From these results, it is possible to monitor the effects of ingredients on physical properties of tangsuyuk batter, and to predict their optimal ratios.

  • In this study, the dynamic response of the umbilical cable in a deep-water unmanned underwater vehicle system was analyzed. In order to analyze the forces acting on the cable, the launcher and umbilical cable were modeled by the simple 1-D mass-spring system. Damping and dynamic analysis was carried out by a direct time integration scheme using the $Newmark-{\beta}$ method with inverse iteration procedure, considering the nonlinear drag forces acting on the launcher. The obtained results of the present study can be used for the design of connecting the structure of the launcher and cable of the UUV system.

  • In this paper, we suggest a virtual machining system that can simulate cutting forces of ball end milling at the stage of part design. Cutting forces, here, are estimated from the machanistic model that uses the concept of specific cutting farce coefficient. To this end, we need undeformed chip thickness which is used for calculating chip load. It is derived from the Z-map data of a CAD model. That is, chip load is the height difference between the cutting tool and the workpiece at an arbitrary position. The tool contact point is referred from the cutter location data. On the other hand, the workpiece height is acquired from the Z-map model of a CAD data. From the experimental verification, we can simulate machining process effectively to the slot and the side cutting of ball end mill.

  • This paper presents vibration and noise control of flexible structures using squeeze mode electro-rheological mounts. After verifying that the damping force of the ER mount can be controlled by the intensity of the electric fild, two different types of ER squeeze mounts have been devised. Firstly, a small size ER mount to support 3 kg is manufactured and applied to the frame structure to control the vibration. An optimal controller which consists of the velocity and the transmitted force feedback signals is designed and implemented to attenuate both the vibration and the transmitted forces. Secondly, a large size of ER mount to support 200 kg is devised and applied to the shell structure to reduce the radiated noise. Dynamic modeling and controller design are undertaken in order to evaluate noise control performance as well as isolation performance of the transmitted force. The radiated noise from the cylindrical shell is calculated by SYSNOISE using forces which are transmitted to the cylindrical shell through two-stage mounting system.

Partial-interaction fatigue assessment of stud shear connectors in composite bridge beams

  • There is a growing demand to assess the remaining strength and endurance of existing composite steel and concrete bridge beams due to the aging infrastructure, increases in permissible vehicle weights and increases in their frequencies. As codes are generally dedicated to the design of new structures, new procedures are required to aid in the assessment of existing bridges to ensure that they are utilised to the full. In this paper, simple expressions are presented to perform partial-interaction analyses directly from full-interaction analyses, so that the beneficial effect of partial-interaction on the shear forces on the shear connectors can be utilised in assessment to extend the fatigue life of simply supported bridge beams and to determine the effect of remedial work if necessary. Use of the assessment technique is described by way of an illustrative example.
