The present paper provides the design specifications and working principle of flow controlling vortex valve which will be adopted in a Korean next generation reactor (APR1400). The vortex valve is installed inside the pressurized safety injection tank of APR1400, and it passively controls the water discharge flowrate from the tank. In the present study, the performance of the vortex valve have been evaluated throughout the repeated experiments in the full-scale test facility called VAPER(VAlve Performance Evaluation Rig). Based on the experimental results, it is confirmed that the currently developed vortex valve satisfies the major performance requirements of APR1400 plant design in view of the peak discharge flowrate, pressure loss coefficient, and total discharge duration time. To achieve the highest quality of the experimental results, a quality assurance program for vortex valve tests has been strictly applied.
Small hydropower resources for five major river systems have been studied. The model, which can predict flow duration characteristic of stream, was developed to analyze the variation of inflow caused from rainfall condition. And another model to predict hydrologic performance for small hydropower(SHP) plants is established. Monthly inflow data measured at Andong dam were analyzed. The predicted results from the developed models in this study showed that the data were in good agreement with measured results of long term inflow at Andong darn. It was found that the models developed in this study can be used to predict the available potential and technical potential of SHP sites effectively. Based on the models developed in this study, the hydrologic performance for small hydropower sites located in river systems have been analyzed. The results show that the hydrologic performance characteristics of SHP sites have some difference between the river systems. Especially, the specific design flowrate and specific output of SHP sites located on North Han river and Nakdong river systems have large difference compared with other river systems.
A draft tube which has impeller to elevate bottom water and spread it over surface of lake water, induces convective circulation of lake water, a Long-Distance Circulation (LDC). Circulation of lake water make stratified water mixed and enhance DO (Dissolved Oxygen) of bottom water. Circulation rate of water is determined by draft rate of the tube, which is dependent on design parameters of the draft tube system, i. e. dimension of impeller and diffuser, inclined angle of impeller, impeller shape, and rotational speed. In this study, change in draft rate and power consumption of circulation equipment was investigated numerically with changing impeller dimension, angle and rotational speed. It was found that flowrate of draft water was increased as the dimensions of draft tube and impeller, and rotational speed and inclined angle of impeller increased. The power consumption was also elevated with increasing parameter values, and final selection of parameter values was made to satisfy target flowrates and power consumption.

The cleaning efficiency of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes inevitably fouled by organic foulants depends upon both chemical (type of cleaning agent, concentration of cleaning solution) and physical (cleaning time, flowrate, temperature) parameters. In attempting to determine the optimal procedures for chemical cleaning organic-fouled RO membranes, the design of experiments concept was employed to evaluate key factors and to predict the flux recovery rate (FRR) after chemical cleaning. From experimental results and based on the predicted FRR of cleaning obtained using the Central Composite Design of Minitab 17, a modified regression model equation was established to explain the chemical cleaning efficiency; the resultant regression coefficient ($R^2$) and adjusted $R^2$ were 83.95% and 76.82%, respectively. Then, using the optimized conditions of chemical cleaning derived from the response optimizer tool (cleaning with 0.68 wt% disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid for 20 min at $20^{\circ}C$ with a flowrate of 409 mL/min), a flux recovery of 86.6% was expected. Overall, the results obtained by these experiments confirmed that the equation was adequate for predicting the chemical cleaning efficiency with regards to organic membrane fouling.
The evaporative desalination system using solar thermal energy would be the efficient and attractive method to get fresh water from brine due to low carbon dioxide generation. In this research the solar desalination system as a heating source of refrigerant R123 in the evaporator was considered. The circulation of refrigerant in the evaporator can reduce the energy consumption of the system, because of using the latent heat of the refrigerant 123 instead of the sensible heat of present hot water. The system was comprised of the single-stage fresh water production unit on the capacity of 1ton/day with shell and tube type evaporator, heaters instead of solar collector to supply the proper heat to refrigerant, and refrigerant and brine circulation systems. Various operating flowrate and temperature ranges were varied in the experiments to get the optimum design data. The results showed that the optimum flow rate of brine feed rate to evaporator was 1.2Liter/min, and the yield of fresh water was increased as higher temperature of feed brine. It was confirmed that the circulation flowrate of heating source of refrigerant was decrease of one fifth of the present warm water system, and very efficient system for solar desalination.
In order to evaluate the performance of a powdered activated carbon (PAC) contactor, two water treatment plants (WTP) were selected as target sites. The result of tracer tests showed that the plug flow portion of a bisymmetry-type contactor (H WTP) was more than 70%. A maze-type contactor (C WTP) also had more than 70% of plug flow portion after intra-basin baffles were installed. According to the operating data of the target WTPs, there was no clear evidence that the addition of PAC contributed to the removal of organics. However, the results of jar tests, conducted with the raw water taken from the H WTP, proved that PAC could remove dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to some extent when the proper velocity gradient was maintained. It was estimated that the production rate, defined as the ratio of the operating flowrate to the design flowrate, of the C and H WTPs was only 27 and 50%, respectively. Because of these lower production rates, the mixing intensity in the contactor was much less than the designed value and, finally, the performance of the PAC contactor was much lower than what was expected.
A multi-perforated tube indicates the existence of multiple holes of various shapes on the surface of a long cylinder-type or rectangular tube, and a hole installed on the surface is called an orifice, as it is relatively small in size, compared with the surface area of the tube. In this study, the flow characteristics of a circular multi-perforated tube with many orifices on the surface were investigated experimentally and numerically. The volume flowrate issuing from each orifice, discharge angle, effective flow area ratio, and the flow fields around the orifices were measured and visualized, with the variation of the orifice area ratio, at the same blockage ratio. The volume flowrate distributions along the flow direction of the multi-perforated tube tends to be more uniform, as larger orifices were positioned at the inlet side of the multi-perforated tube, compared with no orifice area change along the flow direction.

Synthesis for qualitative analysis in connection with quantitative analysis from the pinch design method, EVOP and Operations Research is proposed for the optimal synthesis of heat exchanger networks, that is through of the transportation model of the linear programming for synthesizing chemical processing systems, to determine the location of pinch points, the stream matches and the corresponding heat flowrate exchanged at each match. In the second place, according to the optimization, the optimal design of heat transfer enhancement is carried on a fixed optimum heat exchanger network structure, in which this design determines optimal operational parameters and the chosen type of heat exchangers as well. Finally, the method of this paper is applied to the study of the optimal synthetic design of heat exchanger network of constant-decompress distillation plants.
The effects of design parameters for small scale hydro power(SSHP) plants due to rainfall condition have been studied. The model to predict hydrologic performance for SSHP plants is used in this study. The results from analysis for rainfall conditions based on Weibull distribution show that the capacity and load factor of SSHP site had large difference between the variation of shape and scale parameter. Especially, the hydrologic performance of SSHP site due to variation of shape parameter varied more sensitive than the case of variation of scale parameter. And also, the methodology represented in this study can be used to decide the primary design specifications of SSHP sites.
