  • Fire safety systems in large buildings are likely to be complex and may be designed independently of other systems. This means that the interactions and interfaces between the fire safety systems and between the environmental control systems and the fire safety systems may not be carried out properly. Many large, recent buildings have many technological component systems that are used for the control of the environment within the building. Because of the "special" nature of the fire safety systems there is little consideration is given to the possibility systems with a dual function. However, many of the functions of fire safety systems are extensions of systems that provide the day to day control over the internal environment. The present world-wide trend towards the establishment of performance codes, and regulations, will enable the functional design of all systems and thereby allow closer integration of the "ordinary" and "special" systems. Some aspects of the functional and performance characteristics of systems in buildings are introduced and discussed. Special reference is made to the contributions of the systems to the minimisation of fire damage.e minimisation of fire damage.

  • This paper presents a numerical investigation on the structural response of a multi-story building subjected to spreading multi-compartment fires. A recently proposed simple fire model has been used to simulate two spreading multi-compartment fire scenarios in a 10-story steel-framed office building. By assuming simple temperature rising and distribution profiles in the fire exposed structural components (steel beams, steel column and concrete slabs), finite element simulations using a three-dimensional structural model has been carried out to study the failure behavior of the whole structure in two multi-compartment fire conditions and also in a standard fire condition. The structure survived the standard fire but failed in the multi-compartment fire. Whilst more accurate fire models and heat transfer models are needed to better predict the behaviors of structures in realistic fires, the current study based on very simple models has demonstrated the importance and necessity of considering spreadingmulti-compartment fires in fire resistance design of multi-story buildings.

  • A solar power generation system uses a solar module that collects solar radiation energy, a connecting board that collects DC power generated from the solar module, and a diode to prevent reverse current from flowing from an inverter to the solar module. The existing photovoltaic connection module consists of only fuses and diodes for reverse polarity and overcurrent blocking, and does not have fire diagnosis, prevention, and suppression functions in the event of a fire. To solve this problem, this paper presents a method to monitor the internal state of the photovoltaic connection module using several sensors and to prevent and extinguish a fire using solenoid valves and fire extinguishing agents when a fire is detected. Through the experiment, it was confirmed that the proposed method normally suppresses the fire in event of a fire.

  • This paper presents results of fire tests on corrugated sheets used as load bearing structure of roofs of industrial buildings. Additional tests of bolted sheet connections to the supporting structure at ambient and elevated temperatures are described. Three connection types were tested and their resistance, stiffness and deformation capacity was evaluated. Finite element simulations of the corrugated sheet based on the experimental observations are briefly described and design models are presented.

  • This paper describes recent developments in composite construction and their effect on codified design procedures in the UK. Areas of particular interest include: rules on shear connection, design of beams with web openings, serviceability limits, such as floor vibrations, and fire safe design. The design of cellular beams with regular circular openings now includes generalized rules for web-post buckling, and for the development of in-plane moment in the web-post for asymmetric sections. Closed solutions for the maximum shear force due to limits on web-post bending or buckling are presented. The fire resistance of cellular beams is also dependent on the temperature of the web-post, and for closely spaced openings. It is necessary to increase the thickness of fire protection to the web. For serviceability design of beams, deflection limits and natural frequency and response factor for vibration are presented. It may be necessary to use stricter limits for certain applications.

  • This paper proposes a new general-purpose automatic fire detection system. And it deals with the contents of related research on how to design and develop for this system. The proposed system automatically notifies the user and the nearby fire department when a fire breaks out in a place where a fire alarm is installed. If this is the case, the nearby fire department can quickly confirm this fact and extinguish the fire at an early stage, thereby reducing human and property damage. The main targets of this system are houses and small buildings. The proposed fire alarm functions as a conventional fire alarm, and if a fire occurs, this fact is immediately transmitted to a nearby receiver through wireless data communication. The receiver in this paper communicates data using Korea's firefighting communication frequency band, and establishes one own network by installing it in various places to quickly receive fire alarm data at any time.

  • In performance-based on fire safety design of buildings, design fires are assumed to be relatively coarse information on potential combustible objects described by its name, weight, size and main constituent materials. As early as 1970s, researchers from Japan has employed various methods of research regarding combustibles investigations. In result, researchers came up with one method that is being presently used. Therefore, our country basis in collection of data for combustibles yielded average measure, receipt rate of furniture usage and execution of combustible investigations to occupancy zone of university respondents. We have found out problem about excessive usage of multi-outlet extensions through research.

  • Unmanned helicopter has several abilities such as vertical take off, hovering, low speed flight at a specific altitude. Such vehicles are becoming popular in actual applications such as search and rescue, aerial reconnaissance and surveillance in the case of a large size disaster and forest fire. In this paper, a flight control system was designed for an unmanned helicopter. This paper was concentrated on describing the systematic design, electronic equipments and their interconnections for realizing the autonomous flight and aerial monitoring. A study on the autonomous waypoint navigation and altitude control performance were performed and tested on a test unmanned helicopter and the performance and the feasibility were represented.

  • Recently the consideration for occupant's security has been raised as very important design element from the fire by building's large sized, higher storied, and its compounded. But the domestic laws regulated the predicative laws according to the technical standard which has no difference from the past domestic evacuation regulation. Therefore, regulation of escape code and developing technology for Korean conditions are needed to reduce victims during disaster by protecting occupant and guiding people to safe places.

  • This paper deals with the development of an approach for evaluating the squash load and rigidity of unprotected concrete filled steel columns at elevated temperatures. The current approach of evaluating these properties is reviewed. It is shown that with a non-uniform temperature distribution, over the composite cross-section, the calculations for the squash load and rigidity are tedious in the current method. A simplified approach is proposed to evaluate the temperature distribution, squash load, and rigidity of composite columns. This approach is based on the model in Eurocode 4 and can conveniently be used to calculate the resistance to axial compression of a concrete filled steel column for any fire resistance time. The accuracy of the proposed approach is assessed by comparing the predicted strengths against the results of fire tests on concrete filled circular and square steel columns. The applicability of the proposed approach to a design situation is illustrated through a numerical example.
