STEP AP218 has a standard schema to represent the structural model of a midship section. While it helps to exchange ship structural models among heterogeneous automation systems, most shipyards and classification societies still exchange information using 2D paper drawings. We propose a feature parameter input method to generate a 3D STEP model of a ship structure from 2D drawings. We have analyzed the ship structure information contained in 2D drawings and have defined a data model to express the contents of the drawing. We also developed a QUI for the feature parameter input. To translate 2D information extracted from the drawing into a STEP AP2l8 model, we have developed a shape generation library, and generated the 3D ship model through this library. The generated 3D STEP model of a ship structure can be used to exchange information between design departments in a shipyard as well as between classification societies and shipyards.
It is noted that the expressionistic feature appears as one of characteristic phenomena for representing the regional culture and economic level. In architecture, it seems to be difficult to define the expressionism in a concrete way because of lots of meanings the word originally has. In this study, the expressionistic feature is defined as a mode which impresses the users emotionally with strength or as a touching and stimulating one, contrary to the designing conception which pursues only the rationality and the functionality. These features can be expressed as designing methods such as organic form, adoption of natural design factor, decisive opening of space or its extreme closing, contrast of mutually opposite components, or application of basic design components. These methods described above are largely categorized into spatial form, openness, scale and design component and also are studied for each example within the scope of these categories. This study has significance in conceptualizing this expressionistic tendency and in analyzing some detailed aspects for expression.
Korean vowels have special feature such that same vowels do not appear sequentially in a syllable. And two vowels appear with consistent rules. Using this feature, functional key stroke methods are available to Korean computer keyboard. Tapping a key makes diphthong easily. This will be used to Korean computer keyboard design.
Motion detection is an important step in computer vision and image processing. Traditional motion detection systems are classified into two categories, namely, feature based and gradient based. In feature based motion detection, features in consecutive frames are detected and matched. Gradient based methods assume that the intensity varies linearly and locally. The method, which we propose, is neither feature nor gradient based but uses the electric field theory. The pixels in an image are modeled as point charges and motion is detected by using the variations between the two electric fields produced by the charges corresponding to the two images.
The characteristics of products and services that induce natural activities of people, namely affordances, play critical roles in making interactions successful and meaningful. Earlier a methodological framework for design for affordances has been devised where repositories of affordance features are used. Affordance features are retrieved from the repository so that the new affordance feature is to be designed through an analogical reasoning. In two classes of Product-Service Systems Design education, this design for affordance method has been introduced in a tutorial setting for designing a hand carrier cart. This paper describes how the method was introduced and shows new affordance features in their design proposals with source affordance features retrieved from the repository. Implications obtained from this tutorial effort are discussed to enrich practical application of the design for affordance method. The study tries to suggest new product design method by using affordance feature repository.

The exchange of model design data among heterogeneous CAD systems is very difficult because each CAD system has different data structures suitable for its own functions. STEP represents product information in a common computer-interpretable form that is required to remain complete and consistent when the product information is needed to be exchanged among different computer systems. However, STEP has complex architecture to represent point, line, curve and vectors of element. Moreover it can't represent geometry data of feature based models. In this study, a structure of XML document that represents geometry data of feature based models as neutral format has been developed. To use the developed XML document, a converter also has been developed to exchange modules so that it can exchange feature based data models among heterogeneous CAD systems. Developed XML document and Converter have been applied to commercial CAD systems.

This paper describes the development of new feature positioning method which embedded into the top-down assembly modeling system supporting conceptual design. In this work, the user provides the geometric constraints representing the position and size of features, then the system calculates their proper solution. The use of geometric constraints which are easy to understand intuitively enables the user to represent his design intents about geometric shapes, and enables the system to propagate the changes automatically when some editing occurs. To find the proper solution of given constraints, the Selective Solving Method in which the redundant or conflict equations are detected and discarded is devised. The validity of feature shapes satisfying the constraints can be maintained by this technique, and under or over constrained user-defined constraints can also be estimated. The problems such as getting the initial guess, controlling the multiple solutions, and dealing with objects of rotational symmetry are also resolved. Through this work, the feature based modeling system can support more general and convenient modeling method, and keeps the model being valid during modifying models.
In this study, we introduce a prototype-based classifier with feature selection that dwells upon the usage of a biologically inspired optimization technique of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The design comprises two main phases. In the first phase, PSO selects P % of patterns to be treated as prototypes of c classes. During the second phase, the PSO is instrumental in the formation of a core set of features that constitute a collection of the most meaningful and highly discriminative coordinates of the original feature space. The proposed scheme of feature selection is developed in the wrapper mode with the performance evaluated with the aid of the nearest prototype classifier. The study offers a complete algorithmic framework and demonstrates the effectiveness (quality of solution) and efficiency (computing cost) of the approach when applied to a collection of selected data sets. We also include a comparative study which involves the usage of genetic algorithms (GAs). Numerical experiments show that a suitable selection of prototypes and a substantial reduction of the feature space could be accomplished and the classifier formed in this manner becomes characterized by low classification error. In addition, the advantage of the PSO is quantified in detail by running a number of experiments using Machine Learning datasets.

A methodology which supports the feature used from design to manufacturing for sculptured pocket is newly devlored and present. The information contents in a feature can be easily conveyed from one application to another in the manufacturing domain. However, the feature generated in one application may not be directly suitable for another whitout being modified with more information. Theobjective of the paper is to parsent the methodology of decomposing a bulky feature of sculptured pocket to be removed into compact features to be efficiently machined. In particular, the paper focuses on the two task: 1) to segment horizontally a bulky feature into intermediate features by determining the adequate depth of cut and cutter size and to generate the temporal precedence graph of the intermediate features and 2)to further decompose each intermediate feature vertical into smaller manufacturing features and to apply the variable feed rate to each small feature. The proposed method will provid better efficiency in machining time and cost than the classical method which uses a long string of NC codes necessary to remove a bulky fecture.
This report introduces the structural design of Hibiya Mitsui Tower built in Tokyo Midtown Hibiya. The upper part of this tower is used for offices and the lower portion is for commercial facilities and a cinema complex which need the large open spaces. The 192m-high building has 35 floors above ground and 4 below ground. The structure is a steel frame using CFT columns to feature the high-performance oil dampers and the buckling restrained braces for vibration control. First, an outline of the structural design of this building is presented. Second, we introduce the transfer frame adopted to realize the large open spaces in the lower part, and the long column supporting the corner part of the high-rise building to avoid making a shade on the adjacent Hibiya Park, which are the feature of this building. Finally, we present an outline of the latest highly efficient semi-active oil dampers adopted in this building, and the vibration responses of this tower.
