The paper deals with the design and implementation of Navigational Aids Training Simulator (VR-NATS) by Virtual Reality (VR). To gave interaction and immersible training situation to the user, prototype VR-NATS was developed based on the object-oriented operating system with 3D objects of navigational aids. Using the VR-NATS we created virtual navigational aids. As results from the assessment tests, students can obtain IALA (International Association of Lighthouse Authorities) rules of the navigational aids exactly and quickly comparing with conventional education methods. Thus, we found that he proposed VR-NAT is very effective for the next-generation simulation system.
Meta-analysis methods are becoming a central part of research integration in behavioral and medical science studies. The main goal of the meta-analysis is combining the quantitative findings from several studies which address the same research problem and is sharing conclusions in a published report. The purpose of this research is to develop meta-analysis approach to evaluate effectiveness of instructional program design to improve school-age children's knowledge and understanding of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). To achieve this purpose, meta-analysis is applied to analyze and synthesize findings for AIDS instructional programs from several prior studies.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an education program for AIDS prevention on knowledge about AIDS and attitudes towards AIDS/people with AIDS among male-high school students. Methods: A research design used in this study was a randomized and non-synchronized control group pre-and-post test. The participants were 560 male students from five high schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. In each school two classes were randomly assigned to each the experimental or control group. The contents of the education program for AIDS prevention consisted of six parts with a total of 50 minutes. The data were analyzed using t-test and chi-square test with SPSS WIN program version 13.0. Results: There were significant differences in knowledge and attitudes between experimental and control groups. The experimental group showed higher scores in knowledge and more positive attitudes than the control group. Conclusion: The education program was effective in increasing positive attitudes towards AIDS/people with AIDS among male high school students. Further application of the program with female students is needed before the results of the study can be generalized.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develope and evaluate the effects of an AIDS education program among health care workers on knowledge, attitudes and care intention about AIDS. Methods: This study was conducted by self reporting with a 44 items of structured questionnaire by 291 health care workers. The research was a quasi-experimental study using one group pre-post design. AIDS education program was consisted of phases for 50 minutes, using power point by a researcher and research assistants. Data were collected before and after education and was analyzed by descriptive statistics and paired t-test. Results: The level of general cognition about AIDS was low. There were a statistically significant increases in the mean of knowledge(t=-22.17, p=.000) and care intention(t=-2.74, p=.006). However, there was no significant difference in the mean of attitudes(t=-.57, p=.569) between the pre-post test. Conclusion: The findings of this study showed the benefits of providing educational interventions for improving knowledge and care about AIDS, while there not any significant changes in attitudes, especially in items based on Korean socio-cultural values. Therefore, to increase attitude about AIDS, various teaching strategies need to be further studied and evaluated.
Purpose: This study investigated the effectiveness of AIDS education on knowledge, prejudice, susceptibility, severity, and intention of safe sex behavior among university students. Methods: This study was conducted from March, 2008 to May, 2008. The research design was a non-equivalent control group pre-post test. Participants 78 university students (control group) and 89 university students (experimental group). For the latter, AIDS education was provided once weekly for 1 h for 4 weeks. The educational program included understanding of sexuality, facts of AIDS, life stories of patients with AIDS, and safe sex behavior. The differences between two groups after education were analyzed by independent t-test. Results: The experimental group had significantly higher scores for knowledge, prejudice, susceptibility, and intention of safe sex behavior compared to the control group. However, no significant difference was found for severity between two groups. Conclusion: AIDS education can be effective in improving knowledge, prejudice, susceptibility, and intention of safe sex behavior, and is recommended as an effective AIDS education for university students.
Purpose: This study investigated the effect of an AIDS education program of nursing junior students on knowledge, attitudes, fear of contagion, and nursing intentions about AIDS. Method: The study was conducted in a university in Chungnam province from March, 2000 to May, 2001. Research design of this study was a nonequivalent control group, non-synchronized design. A traditional lecture education was given to the control group. The experimental group received a multi-media education using video tape and group discussion as well as traditional lecture education. Data were collected 1 month before and after education. The SPSS program was used to analyze the data. Results: The results of this study were as follows: There were significant differences in the mean of knowledge (t=4.227, p=.000), prejudice (t=-2.281, p=.025), social interaction (t= 4.144, p=.000) between experimental group and the control group. But, there were no significant differences in the mean of fear of contagion (t=-7.320, p=.467) and nursing intention (t=.800, p=.427) between the two groups. Conclusion: The findings of this study showed the benefits of providing educational interventions for improving knowledge and attitudes, but didn't show any significant changes on fear of contagion and nursing intention. Therefore, to reduce fear of contagion and increase nursing intention, various teaching strategies need to be further studied and evaluated.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes (discrimination towards HIV/AIDS and lives with HIV infected persons) and HIV/AIDS related sexual behaviors among middle school and high school students in Seoul, Korea. Methods: The population of this study was junior and senior high school students in Seoul, Korea. Eight junior high schools and eight senior high schools were randomly selected from Seoul City. Two thousand nine hundred and ninety-six responses from the sixteen schools were analyzed (fifty-nine were excluded). A self-administered questionnaire measuring socio-demographic variables, knowledge of HIV/AIDS, as well as discriminatory attitudes of HIV/AIDS was utilized. Results: The level of HIV/AIDS knowledge was low and the levels of discriminatory attitudes were high. The results indicated that students had considerable misconceptions about HIV transmission as well as stigmatizing attitudes towards HIV-infected people and their lives. The proportions of sexual intercourse were 1.3 % for middle school students and 7.7% for high school students. Only 30.7% of current sexually active subjects were to use condoms at the last step of sexual intercourse. The HIV/AIDS related risk-taking behavior were predicted by gender, school types, parents' marital status, reported academic performances, and attitudes towards to homosexuals. Conclusions: It is important to design HIV prevention strategies that improve in the knowledge of HIV transmission for adolescents in Korea.
Objectives: This study aimed to identify the behaviors associated with discrimination towards people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) in Indonesia and to determine the factors affecting discrimination. Methods: Secondary data from the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey were analyzed using a cross-sectional design. Discrimination was assessed based on the questions (1) "Should children infected with HIV/AIDS be allowed to attend school with non-infected children?" and (2) "Would you buy fresh vegetables from a farmer or shopkeeper known to be infected with HIV/AIDS?" Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the factors affecting discrimination, with adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and 95% confidence interval (CIs) used to show the strength, direction, and significance of the associations among factors. Results: In total, 68.9% of 21 838 individuals showed discrimination towards PLHA. The odds of discrimination were lower among women (aOR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.55 to 0.71), rural dwellers (aOR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.75 to 0.89), those who understood how HIV is transmitted from mother to child (aOR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.73 to 0.89), and those who felt ashamed of their own family's HIV status (aOR, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.52 to 0.61). The odds were higher among individuals who knew how to reduce the risk of getting HIV/AIDS (aOR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.15 to 1.39), how HIV/AIDS is transmitted (aOR, 3.49; 95% CI, 3.09 to 3.95), and were willing to care for an infected relative (aOR, 2.78; 95% CI, 2.47 to 3.13). A model consisting of those variables explained 69% of the variance in discrimination. Conclusions: Gender, residence, knowledge, and attitudes related to HIV/AIDS were explanatory factors for discrimination against PLHA. Improvements in HIV/AIDS education programs are needed to prevent discrimination.
Even though the rate of infection of HIV is very low compared to other countries, data show a steady rise in HIV infection rates among young people in South Korea. A peer education program was provided to prevent the incidence of AIDS in young people. The program used peer leaders to provide AIDS related information and counseling for middle school students. Peer leaders received special training in AIDS related education and counseling to assist their friends. Peer leaders worked with their mends in one-to-one or small group settings. A pretest-posttest control design (six months after intervention) was used to evaluate the effects of the peer education program for prevention of AIDS. A post-intervention survey found that do you mean six months after the program or after six months of programs of peer program activities, the experimental groups(groups with peer educators) showed better knowledge, more positive attitudes, and less sexual activity when compared to control groups of non-participants(groups without peer educators). Peer leaders showed significant gains in knowledge about HIV transmission, more positive attitudes and self-efficacy not to engage in high-risk behaviors. Peer education was an effective tool for increasing knowledge, improving attitudes and self-efficacy, and encouraging appropriate behavior change.
Purpose: This study was conducted to describe the knowledge and attitudes of nursing and non-nursing college students toward HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B. Methods: A descriptive design was used for this study. The subjects were 123 nursing college students and 128 non-nursing college students. Self-administered questionnaires were used for data collection. Descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used for data analysis. Results: Nursing students showed a greater understanding and more favorable attitudes towards HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B than non-nursing college students. Most non-nursing college students learned about HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B from Mass Media. In contrast, many nursing college students learned about HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B from technical books and lecture. Students who learned from technical books and lecture showed a higher score for knowledge and more favorable attitudes regarding HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrated that educational opportunities in school are crucial to enhancing knowledge and attitudes toward HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B. A structured education program using strategies to improve attitudes is necessary for college students.
