The purpose of this study was to improve the desalination performance by using split electrodes in the capacitive desalination process. The experiment was carried out by measuring the desalination efficiency of the NaCl aqueous solution according to the partitioning of the electrode at 20 mL/min flow rate, 1.2 V, 3 min adsorption conditions, and -1 V, 1 min desorption conditions. The desalination efficiency for the non-divided electrodes with a surface area of $146cm^2$ reached 40% while the divided electrode with a surface area of $133cm^2$ showed a desalination efficiency of 57%. The desalination efficiency of the same split electrode was 49% at 2 cm divided interval and 57% at 1cm divided interval. The desalination efficiency of the split electrode was higher than that of the normal CDI and narrower divided intervals increased the performance.

In this study, economic analysis of five desalination technologies for saline agricultural land was carried out. The analysis was comprehensively evaluated by calculating changes in crop production and benefit/cost (B/C) ratio. The analysis of crop production was in the order of tomato > cucumber > a (musk) melon > watermelon > cabbage, and economical efficiency for desalination technology was in the order of soil exchange > soil addition > electrokinetics > under-drainage > subsoil reversal. In cost benefit analysis, B/C ratio was in the order of under-drainage > soil exchange > electrokinetics > soil addition > subsoil reversal, and all desalination technologies used in this study have the ratio higher than 1, which means economical efficiency was high. Based on the net production considering B/C ratio, the general economic analysis was exactly order from that of crop production analysis. As a result, economical efficiency of soil exchange was highest, and economical efficiency of soil addition and electrokinetic was relatively higher than others.

Desalination has the advantage of being easy to supply water resources. However most desalination devices are developed mainly for large plants and it is not common to use desalination system for a small fishing ship. More than 50% of the input fuel energy of the small shipbuilding's engine is wasted without reused in a ship, and it is necessary to improving the fuel efficiency of the small fishing ship. In this study, a desalination device using waste heat from engine of the ships was developed. As results, it was found that if the condensing chamber uses a fan to circulate the water vapor, the freshwater production was up to 40.0% higher, and the freshwater production efficiency was up to 30.1% increased when the fan was operated.

In the paper, desalination technology for a barge mounted plant is presented. Desalination system on a barge needs high efficiency, smaller space, and stability. Therfore 4-effect distillation system (capacity of 50ton/day) is designed and constructed. During operation, detailed investigation of different opereation parameters is carried. This paper discusses about product water flowrate and recover ratio with different steam flow rate and feed water rate.
Complicated and expensive seawater desalination technology is a big challenge in boron removal process. Conventional seawater desalination process of coagulation utilized for pre-treatment is difficult to remove boron. Boron can be removed more effectively in Reverse Osmosis (RO) process than any other processes. In this study, a coagulant with the name Mineral Cluster was examined its boron removal ability. Boron removal efficiency of Mineral Cluster depended on pH value and Mineral Cluster dosage. Desalination process combines the pre-treatment process with Mineral cluster diluted at the ratio of 1:2500 and the RO membrane process. The original sea water could be desalinated to drinking water quality, 1 mg/L, without any pH adjustments. Therefore, if the Mineral cluster is added without any other chemicals for adjusting pH, the desalination process would be much safer, efficient and economical.

A new apparatus for seawater desalination, based on the principle of gas hydrates, is suggested. The equipment continuously produces and pelletizes gas hydrates by a squeezing operation in a dual cylinder unit, which is able to extract pure hydrate pellets from the seawater-containing reactor. Desalination efficiency for each dissolved ion from seawater samples was tested by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and ion chromatography (IC) analysis. This study demonstrates that the suggested method and the stated apparatus may solve the difficulty of separating hydrate crystals from concentrated brine solutions, and therefore may be applied to improve the efficiency of existing desalination processes.

An effective capacitive deionization process termed membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) is newly designed and experimentally tested for seawater desalination. By preventing co-ions to be expelled, MCDI can improve the ion removal performance, but there is a trade-off between blocking co-ion transfer and increasing contact resistance. The conventional MCDI uses 2D-shaped films which increase contact resistance and reduce desalination performance in the trade-off. In this paper, with the 3-D shape of Nafion coated activated carbon cloth, the mentioned problems are expected to be solved making the desalination performance better. We visualized ion concentration and fluid flows with half-MCDI cell that can measure only efficiency of cathode. We found the optimal number of coatings which have the better efficiency than CMX, commercial cation exchange membrane in fixed current conditions of 100uA.

Desalination is getting more attention as an alternative to solve a global water shortage problem in the future. Especially, a desalination technology is being expected as a new growth engine of Korea's overseas plant business besides one of the solutions of domestic water shortage problem. In the past, a thermal evaporation technology was a predominant method in desalination market, but more than 75% of the current market is hold by a membrane-based reverse osmosis technology because of its lower energy consumption rate for desalination. In the future, it is expected to have more energy efficient desalination process. Accordingly, various processes are being developed to further enhance the desalination energy efficiency. One of the promising technologies is a desalination process combined with Pressure Retarded Osmosis (PRO) process. The PRO technology is able to generate energy by using osmotic pressure of seawater or desalination brine. And the other benefits are that it has no emission of $CO_2$ and the limited impact of external environmental factors. However, it is not commercialized yet because a high-performance PRO membrane and module, and a PRO system optimization technology is not sufficiently developed. In this paper, the recent research direction and progress of the SWRO-PRO hybrid desalination was discussed regarding a PRO membrane and module, an energy recovery system, pre-treatment and system optimization technologies, and so on.
Gas hydrate (GH) process is a new desalination technology, where GH is a non- stoichiometric crystalline inclusion compounds formed by water and a number of gas molecules. Seawater GH is produced in a low temperature and a high pressure condition and they are separated from the concentrated seawater. The drawback of the GH process so far is that salt contents contained in its product does not meet the fresh water quality standard. This means that the GH process is not a standalone process for seawater desalination and it needs the help of other desalting process like reverse osmosis (RO). The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of GH process on energy saving for RO process in seawater desalination. The GH product water quality data, which were obtained from a literature, were used as input data for RO process simulation. The simulation results show that the energy saving effect by the GH process is in a range of 68 % to 81 %, which increases as the salt removal efficiency of the GH process increases. Boron (B) and total dissolved solids (TDS) concentrations of the final product of the hybrid process of GH and RO were also investigated through the RO process simulation to find relavant salt rejection efficiency of the GH process. In conclusion, the salt rejection efficiency of the GH process should exceed at least 78% in order to meet the product water quality standards and to increase the energy saving effect.
Desalination experiments were carried out with two types of cell configuration; a CDI cell constructed with carbon electrodes only and a membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) cell having a cation-exchange membrane on the cathode surface. The salt removal rate and desalination efficiencies increased linearly with increasing the cell potential. Although the same carbon electrodes were used in the desalination experiments, the MCDI cell showed higher salt removal efficiency than that of the CDI cell. The amount of salt removal for the MCDI cell was enhanced by 33.1~135% compared to the CDI cell, depending on the applied cell potential in the range of 0.8~1.2 V. In addition, the current efficiency for the MCDI cell was about 80%, whereas the efficiency was under 40% for the CDI cell. The higher salt removal efficiency in the MCDI cell was attributed to the fact that ions were selectively transported between the electric double layer and the bulk solution in the MCDI cell configuration.
