Concentrations of total dissolved free amino acids (DFAAs) in the northeast Pacific Ocean $9^{\circ}54'-10^{\circ}27'N$, $131^{\circ}43'-131^{\circ}53'W$) ranged from 15.9 to 1778.2 17M, and the average was 407.2 nM. Concentrations of DFAAs in surface mixed layers, ranged from 60.1 to 1411.9 nM, and the average was 535.2 nM. Seasonal thermoclines with maxima were formed between the depth of 50 to 150 m. DFAAs in this layer were varied in concentrations from 91.7 to 1778.2 nM, and the average was 588.5 nM. DFAAs below the seasonal thermoclines fluctuated from 15.9 to 384.2 nM, and the average was 175.1 nM. Consequently, in average relatively abundant DFAAs were observed in the subsurface layer than the deeper layer. DFAA vertical profiles and compositions of station A showed similar to station Band C. Glycine, alanine, glutamic acid, serine and valine were predominant accounting for more than 60% of total amino acids. Isoleucine, tyrosine, methionine and phenylalanine comprised only few percents of total DFAAs in the study area. In mole % of amino acid, according to characteristics of functional group of amino acid, aliphatic neutral accounted for 59% and aliphatic hydroxy 16%, acidic 12%, respectively. Although differences in DFAA concentrations with depth were observed, the amino acid composition and mole % of deeper layers in all stations were similar to those of subsurface layers. The results indicate that individual DtAAs remains invariably in water columns relative to the compositions and distributions of DFAAs in the study area, which may be the result of close coupling between microbial activity and their water solubility.

In order to investigate the velocity structure of the southern part of the Korean peninsula, exploded seismic signals were recorded for 120 s along a 294-km WNW-ESE line and 150 s along a 335-km NNW-SSE line in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Velocity tomograms were derived from inverting first arrival times. One-dimensional velocity models derived by joint analyses of teleseismic receiver functions and surface wave dispersion at several stations near the profiles were uesd to build initial models. The raypaths indicate several midcrust interfaces including ones at approximate depths of 2.0 and 14.9 km with refraction velocities of approximately 6.0 and 7.1 km/s, respectively. The deepest significant interface varies in depth from 30.8 km to 36.1 km. The critically refracting velocity varies from 7.8 to 8.1 km/s along this interface which may correspond to the Moho discontinuity. The velocity tomograms show (1) existence of a low-velocity zone centered at 6-7 km depth under the Okchon fold belt, (2) extension of the Yeongdon fault down to greater than 10 km, and (3) existence of high-velocity materials under the Gyeongsan basin whose thickness is less than 4.2 km.
Ester-linked fatty acid methyl ester (EL-FAME) profiles were used to describe differences in soil microbial communities influenced by conventional farming system (CFS), and organic farming system (OFS) in controlled horticultural land. Soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial communities were determined in the experimental fields. Higher organic matter content in OFS reduced soil bulk density which in turn increased the soil porosity. Generally, soil chemical properties in OFS were higher than those of CFS, but EC value in OFS was significantly lower than that of CFS. With the exception of Fe content, other macronutrient contents and pH in both farming system decreased with the soil depth. Soil microbial biomass of OFS was approximately 1.3 times in topsoil and 1.8 times in subsoil higher than those of CFS. Lower ratios of cy17:0 to $16:1{\omega}7c$ and cy19:0 to $18:1{\omega}7c$ were found in the CFS soils than the OFS soils, indicating that microbial stress decreased. The ratio of MUFA to SFA was higher in OFS due to organic input to the soil. In principal components analysis (PCA), the first variable accounted for 54.3%, while the second for 27.3%, respectively. The PC1 of the PCA separated the samples from CFS and OFS, while the PC2 of the PCA separated the samples from topsoil and subsoil. EL-FAMEs with the positive eigenvector coefficients for PC1 were cy17: 0 to $16:1{\omega}7c$ ratio, cy19:0 to $18:1{\omega}7c$ ratio, soil pH, soil organic matter, and soil $NO_3$-N content. Our findings suggest that the shifting cy19:0 to $18:1{\omega}7c$ ratio should be considered as potential factors responsible for the clear microbial community differentiation observed between different cultivation systems and soil depth in controlled horticultural land.

Site response analyses were peformed based on equivalent linear technique using the shear wave velocity profiles of 162 sites collected around the Korean Peninsula. The she characteristics, particularly the shear wave velocities and the depth to bedrock, are compared to those in the western United States. The site coefficients of short period $(F_a)$ and the long period $(F_v)$ obtained from this study were significantly different compared to 1997 Uniform Building Code (1997 UBC). $F_a$ underestimated the motion in shot period ranges and $F_v$ overestimated the motion in mid period ranges in Korean seismic guideline. It is found that the existing Korean seismic design code were is required to be modified considering geological site conditions in Korea for the reliable estimation of sue amplification. Problems of the current seismic design code were dicussed in this paper and the development of site classification method and modification of desing response spectra were discussed in the companion papers(II-Development of Site Classification System and III-Modification of Dosing Response Specra).
A number of ocean outfalls are located around coastal area over the United States and discharge primary treated effluent into deep water for efficient wastewater treatment. Two of them, the Sand Island and Honouliuli municipal wastewater outfalls, are located on the south coast of Oahu. There have been growing interests about the plume dynamics around the ocean outfalls since plume discharged from the multiport diffuser may have significant impacts on coastal communities and immediate consequence on public health. Among the studies of plume dynamics performed in the vicinity of both outfalls, Project MB-4 in the Mamala Bay Study recently made with the funding in the $ 9 million amount statistically dealt with the near-field behavior of the plumes at the Sand Island and Honouliuli outfalls. However, Project MB-4 predicted much higher surfacing frequency than the realistic value obtained by model studies by Oceanit Laboratories, Inc.. It is suggested that improvements should be made in the application of the plume model to more simulate the actual discharge characteristics and ocean conditions. In this study, it has been recommended that input parameters in plume models reflect realistic density profile over the entire water column since. in the previous Mamala Bay Study, the density profiles were measured at 5m depth increments extending from 13 to 63 m depth (the density profile on the upper portion of water column was not included, Roberts 1995). It is proved that the density stratification is the important parameter for the submergence of the plume. In this study, as one of the important parameters, plume rise and initial dilution reflecting the density profile over the entire water column have been taken into account for more reliable plume behavior description.

Vertical profiles of dissolved Cu and Ni at the upper 400 m water layer have been determined at two stations in the central East Sea in October 1995. This is the first report on the vertical distribution of trace metals in Korea. Copper concentrations are in the range of 2.1~5.8 nmol/kg and 1.6~2.4 nmol/kg for stations S and N, respectively. The vertical profile of Cu at S is found a scavenging type (i.e., drastic decrease with increasing depth). Concentrations of Ni range from 4.3 to 7.1 nmol/kg and from 3.4 to 5.4 nmol/kg for stations Sand N, respectively. At station S, Ni is best correlated with phosphate, but not at stations N. Such difference between two stations are probably due to their different vertical distribution of water masses. Station S has a strongly stratified water column with 6 distinct water masses, but station N with a well-mixed subsurface water layer extending from 50 to 300 m depth. Extremely low salinity (31.87~31.96 psu) found at the surface water of station S was interpreted as a result of the Yangtze River effluents which were probably fed into the East Sea through the Korea Strait during the late summer. Such seasonal appearance of low salinity in southern part of the East Sea was reported previously. The concentrations of Cu and Ni at two sites are comparable to those reported in the North Pacific. It was found that Ni mostly exist as dissolved phase.

The underwater glider using conception of Lagrangian method, is a new observation platform to understand the properties of the ocean vertically. In 2011 March, KORDI made a first successful autonomous trip from Hupo to west coast of Uleungdo piloting Littoral Glider of Alaska Native Technology LLC. The journey considered many environmental variables and route vigilantly selected, the glider covered 177 km horizontally and took approximately 6 days (153 hours). Despite the existence of 1 kt eddy current, Sound velocity sampling was conducted from 5 meters and reaching maximum of 200 meters depth at each dive. It successfully collected sound velocity and temperature profile at every 5 seconds totaling up to 1408 profiles using SVT&P sensor. During the flight it was also a mission to check the diverse modes of the glider i.e. spiral, waypoints, heading, drift and hover could function without a defect in a given situation. These modes were thoroughly monitored and it could be considered that the glider handled it well during the flight. As a result of this test flight, it was evident that the given underwater glider could operate under 2kt current environment with users defined heading and depth, also with the payload up to 5 kg without changing internal buoyancy.
It is necessary to understand the behavior of the soils for the dredging constructions. The objective of this study is to estimate void ratio and density changes of the dredged soils by using the geophysical testing methods. A series of laboratory tests is performed to obtain geotechnical index properties of the specimen, retrieved from the west coastal of Korea. The sedimentation and self-weight consolidation tests are carried out with observing changes of the interfacial height and the elastic wave velocities. The same amounts of the soils are poured into the testing column at intervals of 12 hours until the interheight reaches to a certain level. After the completion of the sedimentatation and self-weight consolidation tests, downward permeability test is performed to assess a tidal influence in the nearshore. The mini resistance cone is penetrated into the specimen to measure the electrical resistivity with depth. All tests are completely finished, the weight of specimens are measured to calculate the void ratio with the depth. Experimental results show that the aspects of the self-weight consolidation are invisible during dredging process because of rapid sedimentation characteristics of ML. However, the elastic wave velocities increase with increasing in the effective stresses. During permeability test, measured permeability and the elastic wave velocities maintain almost identical values. Void ratio based on the elastic wave velocities changes linearly with time during the step dumpings. Void ratio estimated by the electrical resistivity represents the repeatedly layered depositions according to the step-by-step dumpings. Void ratio determined by soil sampling is similar to those of elastic waves and electrical resistivity profiles. This experimental study demonstrates that the geophysical testing methods may be an effective method for evaluating the behavior of dredged soils.
The present study was carried out to examine flow properties in linear drainage channels such as road surface drainage facilities. The finite difference formulation for the varied flow analysis was solved for flow profiles in the channels. Starting the first step at the control section, the Newton-Raphson method was applied for producing numerical solutions of the equation. We considered two types of linear drainage channels, a channel with one outlet at downstream end and a channel with two outlets at both ends. Moreover, the flow analysis for various channel slopes was performed. However, we considered channels with the two outlets of slopes satisfying the condition that the both ends are the control section. The maximum of those slopes was decided from the relation between the channel slope and the location of control section. The flow of a channel with one outlet was calculated upward and downward from the control section existing in channel or upward from the control section at downstream end. The flow of a channel with two outlets at both ends were calculated for upstream and downstream channel segments divided by the water dividend, respectively and the flow analysis was completed when the water depth at the water dividend calculated from upstream end was equal to that calculated from downstream end. If the slope was larger than the critical slope, the channel with two outlets was likely to behave like the channel with one outlet. The maximum water depth was investigated and compared with that calculated additionally from the uniform flow analysis. The uniform flow analysis was likely to lead a excessive design of a drainage channel with mild slope.

Bathymetry sounding or water depth measurement is becoming more and more sophisticated with the increasing demand in accuracy, resolution and coverage in the recent years. Single beam echo sounding is still utilized to gather single line bathymetric profile in many surveys as ever, although there is an increasing demand for multi-beam echo sounding. Single beam echo sounder system acquires single line profiles of water depth as the vessel travel along the survey line. In this study, we performed single beam echo sounding with GNSS receiver for hydrographic survey at Namgang dam basin to calculate pure sediment. Unlike traditional research, we used not field reference station but NTRIP service of the reference station of DGNSS(Differential Global Navigation Satellite System) Central Office in this GNSS survey. The calculation results show that scouring volume is $603,650m^3$, sediment volume is $3,913,750m^3$ and so pure sediment volume is $3,310,100m^3$ at Namgang dam basin. And the availability of the NTRIP service of the DGNSS Central Office for echo sounding in land area has been confirmed in this study.
