  • This study was performed to establish the cephalometric standards and to compare measurement of Korean children in the Field I, II, III, IV, V, VI to Japanese and Caucasians by the Ricketts' analysis. Lateral cephalograms of 24 males and 27 females with normal occlusion and acceptable profile 9 years of age were obtained and statistically analyzed. 1. Norms of Korean males, females and both sexes at 9 years old were established. 2. Significant differences between male and female exist in incisor overjet, maxillary incisor protrusion, mandibular incisor inclination, cranial deflection, corpus length. Maxillary incisor of male was more protrude and overjet was larger than female 3. Korean was similar to Japanese but different from Caucasian. Compare with facial axis and facial depth, chin was retruded dolichofacial pattern and due to large mandibular plane angle and small corpus length, mandibular plane was inclined and mandible body was short. Compare with porion location, ramus position and posterior facial height, ramus was long and located posterior. Compare with maxillary depth and maxillary height, maxilla was located posterior and inferior. The distance between the upper molar and PTV was short, the amount of distalization is limited. Maxillary and mandibular incisor were more protruded and also lower lip was more protruded to esthetic line 4. In comparison between 9 and 11 years old, growth changes of facial depth, mandibular plane angle, corpus length and upper molar position were larger than that of Japanese and Caucasians.

  • Based on the profiles of cone index with depth, physical properties of hardpan in selected rice fields were measured and analyzed in the study. An error correction algorithm removing a random measurement error from raw CI profile data was introduced in the study. The properties of hardpan included the shape, the thickness and the rice root growing layer. The analysis of physical properties of hardpan in the rice fields showed that the type of hardpan could be classified into 6 categories. The thickness of hardpan ranged from 6 cm up to 41 cm and the average hardness of hardpan was analyzed to be from 1.1 MPa through 3.2 MPa in Cone index.

  • Emiliania huxleyi is a marine phytoplankton that plays a critical role in global carbon and sulfur cycling. The genome of E. huxleyi has been sequenced, and an in-depth proteomic profile of this organism has been reported. This study analyzed the phosphoproteome of E. huxleyi and identified its changes under calcium-limited conditions. A TiO2 microcolumn was used for phosphopeptide enrichment, followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis. Overall, we identified 7,010 phosphorylated sites on 3,355 phosphopeptides associated with 2,929 phosphoproteins in E. huxleyi. Quantitative analysis revealed changes in the phosphoproteome in E. huxleyi when ambient conditions changed to calcium-limited conditions, notably the phosphorylation of some transporters was altered. This study provides an overview of protein phosphorylation in E. huxleyi and paves the way for further investigations of its biological functions.

  • Generally, it is pointed out that a nonlinear analysis is needed to estimate accurately the water surface fluctuation and dynamic responses of a floating structure in case of large wave reflection. In this study, a frequency-domain method is applied and newly developed to analyze the nonlinear characteristics of the air-chamber floating breakwater. The air-chamber floating breakwater in this study can control well the wave transformation, motions of the structure and its natural frequency by adjusting the air depth in the chamber. Experiments are carried out to verify the numerical results. It is appeared that the mean water level is setup in the anti-node and setdown in the node, while the nonlinearity in wave profile is larger in the node than in the anti-node. Because of vertical mooring system, the sway, especially the time-independent nonlinear component, plays predominant role in the motion. On the other hand, the time-dependent component, as well as the time-independent one to the tensile force of mooring line contributes greatly, and the time averaged value presents tensional force oriented to the onshore side due drift force.

  • Mineralogy, chemistry, physical property, and fossil abundance have been studied for the samples collected from three weathering profiles, two from the Duho Formation and one from the Hagjeon Formation in the Tertiary sediments in the Pohang area. The mineralogy of the samples from the Duho Formation shows somewhat different from that of the Hagjeon Formation. Kaolinite is more abundant and shows higher crystallinity in samples from the Duho Formation than those in the Hagjeon Formation, but clay mineral assemblage in each weathering profile remain fairly constant with depth. This difference in mineral distribution seems to be inherited from original source materials. It indicates that little or not severe leaching has been taking place in these three weathering profiles. Weathering indicies indicate different degrees of susceptibility to chemical weathering in these two formations. The Duho Formation has a higher degree of susceptibility to weathering than that of the Hagjeon Formation which is mainly due to differences in clay mineral assemblages in both formations. A noticeble colour difference between oxidized and unoxidized zones in each profile can be easily recognized which is definetely due to different decomposition rate organic carbon by various oxidation state from surface to bottom of the profile. Weathering process have also intensively influenced microfossil preservation about up to 7-10 m in depth in the Duho Formation. Consequently, characteristics observed at weathering surface should be used as a subsidiary tool in setting geologic boundary or establishing formation. Great care must be taken to choose sampling site for microfossil study.

  • The manufacturer of a linear accelerator (LINAC) has reported that the target melting phenomenon could be caused by a non-recommended output setting and the excessive use of monitor unit (MU) with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). Due to these reasons, we observed an unexpected beam interruption during the treatment of a patient in our institution. The target status was inspected and a replacement of the target was determined. After the target replacement, the beam profile was adjusted to the machine commissioning beam data, and the absolute doses-to-water for 6 MV and 10 MV photon beams were calibrated according to American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Task Group (TG)-51 protocol. To verify the beam data after target replacement, the beam flatness, symmetry, output factor, and percent depth dose (PDD) were measured and compared with the commissioning data. The difference between the referenced and measured data for flatness and symmetry exhibited a coincidence within 0.3% for both 6 MV and 10 MV, and the difference of the PDD at 10 cm depth ($PDD_{10}$) was also within 0.3% for both photon energies. Also, patient-specific quality assurances (QAs) were performed with gamma analysis using a 2-D diode and ion chamber array detector for eight patients. The average gamma passing rates for all patients for the relative dose distribution was $99.1%{\pm}1.0%$, and those for absolute dose distribution was $97.2%{\pm}2.7%$, which means the gamma analysis results were all clinically acceptable. In this study, we recommend that the beam characteristics, such as beam profile, depth dose, and output factors, should be examined. Further, patient-specific QAs should be performed to verify the changes in the overall beam delivery system when a target replacement is inevitable; although it is more important to check the beam output in a daily routine.

  • Analytic solutions for the gradient of surface elevation and vertical profiles of velocity driven by the wind stress in the one-dimensional rectangular basin were obtained under the assumption of steady-state. The approach treats the bottom frictional stress $\tau$$_{b}$ as known and includes vertically varying eddy viscosity $textsc{k}$$_{M}$, which is constant, linear and quadratic of water depth. When the $\tau$$_{b}$ is param-terized with surface stress, depth averaged velocity and bottom velocity, the result shows the relation of the no-slip bottom velocity condition and the bottom frictional stress $\tau$$_{b}$. The results of a mode splitted, (x-$\sigma$) coordinate, numerical model were compared with the derived analytic solutions. The comparison was made for the case such that $textsc{k}$$_{M}$ is the constant, linear and quadratic function of water depth. In the case of constant $textsc{k}$$_{M}$, the gradient of surface elevation and vertical profiles of velocity are discussed for a uniform depth, a mild slope and a relatively steep slope. When $textsc{k}$$_{M}$ is a linear and quadratic function of water depth, the vertical structures of velocities are discussed for various $\tau$$_{b}$. The result of the comparison shows that the vertical structure of velocities depends not only on the value of $textsc{k}$$_{M}$ but also on the profile of $textsc{k}$$_{M}$ and bottom stress $\tau$$_{b}$. Model results were in a good agreement with the analytic solutions considered in this study.his study.y.his study.

  • Purpose : The aim of this study is to investigate the properties of small field size and to measure the penumbra and central axis depth dose varying to the jaw setting and off axis distance for indicate this data to small field sizes radiation therapy. Material and methods : The percentage depth dose, beam profile and central axis output dose was measured by farmer type ion chamber and pinpoint chamber using Primart linac with 6MV energy. Beam quality and penumbra variations according to the central axis shift, from center to every 2cm outside increment, and field size, from $1{\times}1cm$ to $10{\times}10cm$ was investigated and compared with that of the standard geometrical condition's results Results : The differences of measured values between two ion chamber was about $37\%$ at 10cm depth with $1{\times}1cm$ field sizes but as field size increased this differences was diminished gradually. Measured data from various off axis distance with the different asymmetric collimations are not changed significantly but as size decreased the dose variation was increased and at $1{\times}1cm$ field size dose difference among off axis distance was as much as $13\%$, and as shallower the measured depth the central axis dose variations among the OAD was increased, penumbra was not changed noticeably depending on off axis distance but the percentage of penumbra from its initial field sizes was strongly dependant on field sizes and penumbra occupation rates of its own field sizes ranging from $6\%$ at $10{\times}10cm$ to $50\%$ at $1{\times}1cm$ field size. Conclusion : For imrt treatment, there are several numbers of different gentry angles with beams of nonuniform fluences are required and several complex factors involved. Among them the characteristics of beam output varying to the geometrical setting and design of collimators are of important to attaining a good treatment results. As mentioned in results the differences of measured values are changed significantly depends on ion chamber volume, depths and field size. For providing quality radiation treatment, especially at small field size, those factor's should have considering deliberately.
