This paper presents the damage assessment of a free-fall dropped object on the seabed. The damage to a dropped object totally depends on the relationship between the impact energy and the soil strength at the mudline. In this study, unexpected dropping scenarios were first assumed by varying the relevant range of the impact velocity, structure geometry at the moment of impact, and soil strength profile along the penetration depth. Theoretical damage assessments were then undertaken for a free-fall dropping event with a fixed final embedment depth for the structure. This paper also describes the results of a three-dimensional large deformation finite element analysis undertaken for the purpose of validation. The analyses were carried out using the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian approach, modifying the simple elastic-perfectly plastic Tresca soil model. The validation exercises for each dropping scenario showed good agreement, and the present numerical approach was capable of predicting the behavior of a free-fall dropped object.
Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are a type of “smart” material, and their properties can be controlled rapidly and reversibly under the influence of an external stimulus. The application of an external magnetic field can change the shear modulus, hardness, and friction coefficient of MREs. The friction can cause vibration; moreover, the vibration can affect friction. The change of friction depends on the relative motion, normal force, roughness of the rubbing surfaces, material type, temperature, lubrication, relative humidity, and vibration condition. As MREs are a type of “smart material,” their friction coefficient can be reduced by applying an external magnetic field—the applications of this feature in engineering have been widely studied. However, the friction properties of MREs under vibration have not been tested to date. In this study, MRE samples and a reciprocating friction tester were fabricated. The friction coefficient was measured to evaluate the friction properties under various vibration conditions; subsequently, the wear depth and wear surface profile of the MRE were observed in order to evaluate the wear properties. The results show that the friction coefficient of the MREs decreased when a magnetic field was applied. Moreover, the friction coefficient decreased when the vibrational amplitudes increased. The wear depth of the MRE also decreased as the vibrational amplitudes increased.
X-ray stress constant, K, was determined for the diffraction line of (211)plane by using Cr-K$\alpha$ radiation. K was -340.87 MPa/deg. Fatigue crack propagation tests of SS41 steel were conducted under stress ratios of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5. The half-value breadth of X-ray diffraction profile was measured at and beneath the fracture surface. The half-value breadth, B, on the fracture surface was found to increase with increasing $K_max$. The value of B was influenced by stress ratio in SS41 steel. The half-value breadth took the maximum value at the borden of reversed plastic zone, while it approached to the initial (pre-fatigue) value near the boundary of monotonic plastic zone. The maximum depth of the plasticzone was evaluated on the basis of the half-value breadth distribution. The depth $\omega$$_y$ is related to $K_max$by the following equation : $\omega$$_y$ = $\alpha$($K_max$/$\sigma$$_y$$)^2$ where .sigma.$\sigma$$_y$ is the yield strength obtength obtained in tension test .alpha.is 0.136 for SS41 steel.
Chloride penetration is considered as a most crucial factor for the determination of the service life of concrete. A lot of experimental tools for the chloride penetration into concrete have been developed, however, the mechanism was based on only diffusion, although permeability is also main driving forces for the chloride penetration. Permeation reacts on submerged concrete impacting for short to long term durability while capillary suction occurs on only dried concrete for very early time. Furthermore, hydrostatic pressure increases in proportional to measured depth from the surface of water because of the increasing weight of water exerting downward force from above. It is thought, therefore, that the water pressure has a great influence on the chloride penetration and thereby on the service life of marine concrete. In this study, new experiment is designed to examine the effect of water pressure on chloride penetration in concrete quantitatively. As an experiment result, pressure leaded a quick chlorides penetration by a certain depth, while diffusion induced chlorides to penetrate inward slowly. Therefore, it was concluded that chloride should penetrates significantly by water pressure and the phenomena should be accelerated for concrete exposed to deep sea. The research is expected as a framework to define the service life of submerged concrete with water pressure and compute water permeability coefficient of cementitious materials.

The variations of the surface topographical parameters for the analysis of the pedestrian slip and fall accidents during the sliding friction between the specially prepared floor specimens and three working shoes were investigated. The profile ordinate data for each flooring specimen were obtained at 1.1 .mu.m intervals using a laser scanning confocal microscope system along to the direction of sliding. A number of surface roughness parameters, that is, the centre line average (c.l.a.) and root mean square (r.m.s.) roughness, maximum height (Rtm), maximum mean peak height (Rpm), maximum mean depth (Rvm), and average asperity slope were calculated using a computer program and compared with the dynamic friction results. The analysis showed that the surface parameters undergo marked variations during the sliding process, but the variations were statistically significant. It was found that amongst various surface parameters, the maximum depth (Rvm) and the average asperity slope of the asperities were the biggest variation during the sliding proceeding. This result confirms the previous study and may suggests a new approach to monitoring the flooring environments with their service as the effort to reduce the pedestrain slip accident.

A comprehensive study of the electrical properties of low-dose Si implants in Cr-doped GaAs substrates has been made using the Hall-effect/sheet-resistivity measurement technique for various ion doses and annealing temperatures. The samples were implanted at room temperature and annealed with silicon nitride encapsulants in a hydrogen atmosphere for 15 minutes. H-type layers were produced at all dose levels investigated, and the optimum annealing temperature was 850$^{\circ}C$ for all doses. The highest electrical activation efficiency was 89% for Cr-doped GaAs substrates. Depth profiles of carrier concentrations and mo-bilities are highly dependent upon ion dose and annealing temperature. Significant im-plantation damage still remains after an 800$^{\circ}C$ anneal, and a 900$^{\circ}C$ anneal produces signi-ficant outdiffusion as well as indiffusion of the implanted Si ions.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between physical stream characteristics and bed materials in natural rivers. Accordingly, four natural rivers were selected reference streams, they were Nam river, Sumjin River, Naesung River and Han River. Grain size distributions of bed materials were gravels, cobbles and boulders in Han river and Nam river, were sand, gravels, cobbles and boulders in Sumjin river and were sand in Naesung river. Four reference streams were divided into each two reference reaches (straight and bend) by plan and profile characteristics of naturally meandering stream. Therefore various reference reaches were chosen in the aspect of physical stream characteristics and grain size distributions. The results investigated and analyzed are as follows. The streams that grain sizes distributions of river bed materials were coarse were stable because they had variety of bed slope without sediment deposition, and then the riffles frequency and the physical characteristics were various. Also, velocitydepth regime were various in four kinds, and the response parts for water level change were small, so that channel flow status were stable and excellent condition. On the other hand, sand river that grain sizes distributions of river bed materials were fine had not the variety of parameters as velocity-depth regimes, sediment deposition, channel flow status and riffles frequency, so that the physical stream characteristics were not various.

Laser heat treatment technology is used for improving the feature of fatigue resistance and wear resistance in mobile parts. The purpose of this study is to compare the characteristics of laser heat treatment and high frequency heat treatment, which is commonly used in industrial place. For the preemptive experiment, the distribution, depth and size of hardening and its micro-structural features were compared between surface heat treatment case by defocusing and variables of each process for heat treatment by exclusively manufactured heat treatment optical system. As a result, high frequency heat treatment has wide distribution of hardening depth and width about 3 times larger than laser heat treatment, however, its average hardness showed 621.4Hv which is smaller than the average hardness of laser heat treatment with 691Hv.
The need for establishing the contribution of pultruded FRP encasements and additional FRP wraps around these encasements to the shear strength and load-deflection behavior of reinforced concrete beams is the main motivation of the present study. This paper primarily focuses on the effect of additional wrapping around the composite beam on the flexural and shear behavior of the pultruded GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) beams infilled with reinforced concrete, taking into account different types of failure according to av/H ratio (arch action, shear-tension, shear-compression and pure bending). For this purpose, nine hybrid beams with variable shear span-to-depth ratio (av/H) were tested. Hybrid beams with 500 mm, 1000 mm, and 1500 mm lengths and cross-sections of 150x100 mm and 100x100 mm were tested under three-point and four-point loading. Based on the testing load-displacement relationship, ductility ratio, energy dissipation capacity of the beams were evaluated with comprehensive macro damage analysis on pultruded GFRP profile and GFRP wrapping. The GFRP wraps were established to have a major contribution to the composite beam ductility (90-125%) and strength (40-75%) in all ranges of beam behavior (shear-dominated or dominated by the coupling of shear and flexure). The composite beams with wraps were showns to reach ductilities and strength values of their counterparts with much greater beam depth.
This study was conducted to examine the growth change in external nose according to age which plays an important role in determining the facial profile, by analysing the biennial serial lateral cephalograms of 20 males and 20 females of mean 8.5 years old to 16.5 years old who have a normal occlusion. The results of this study were summarized as follows. $\cdot$ Both mean and standard deviation were obtained according to each item, sex and age for the male and female. $\cdot$ Nose heights of the male and female increased with increase in their age. The upper to lower nose height ratio somewhat decreased for both male and female with increase of age. The mean ratio was 3.69 : 1 for the male, respectively, and 3.83 : 1 for the female during this study.$\cdot$ The nose depth indicated the most significant increase of all items according to the increase of age, while the sagittal depth inicated higher value for the female than that of the male in the most age groups. $\cdot$ The nose inclination did not show a remarkable change during this study. $\cdot$ The proportions of growth completed at the earliest age showed the highest percentage for sagittal depth(male : $87.14\%$ & female : $91.29\%$). Also, the male indicated the lowest percentage in lower nose height $(73.04\%)$, while the female did the lowest in nose depth$(79.09\%)$. $\cdot$ There was shown the variable of the greatest correlation between the upper nose inclination and nose depth. $\cdot$ From this study, the whole external nasal growth was occurred downward and forward which was more frequent for forward growth than vertical growth.
